I am a snowbird. I ordered this great cookbook to keep in my "winter home" so I didn't have to cart my original 20+ year old cook book back and forth between both homes. If you weren't lucky enough to ever eat at the Ovens Of Brittany Restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin in the early 1970's you can still try out the delicious recipes all these 45 years later. Not low calorie, nor low fat, nor low carb...just perfect for that knock-your-socks-off taste. I have never had a failure with any of these recipes. I have tried nearly all of the recipes in the past 20+ years. These recipes are often my favorite soup/cheesecake/appetizers/brunch/sandwich/main entrée recipes. I never make any substitutions or additions. Perfect. Period. My go-to book when I want to impress family or guests for breakfast, lunch or supper. Oh, it arrived quickly and in very good shape for a 24 year old cookbook.

During my time in Madison, Wisconsin, this restaurant became our favorite place. The food was always excellent and the atmosphere was so welcoming & comfortable. I hoped that the cookbook would contain the recipe for the Ovens' superb Fresh Cream of Tomato soup, but no. Still, many of the recipes are familiar dishes that I enjoyed, so overall, this was a good find.

I was lucky enough to enjoy the Ovens of Brittany at the State Street location in the early 80's. First place I was comfortable going to by myself for tea with a morning bun or lunch to watch people pass by. It was a nice reminisce reading the Introduction and the recipes. Would have given the book 5 stars if it contained the recipe for the morning bun!

This cookbook is just excellent! I've been asked to share the recipe every time I take a food from this cookbook to a social gathering. I've focused largely on the soup and salad recipes because that's what I like, and all of them have given me gourmet quality flavorful foods using interesting herbs and spices that are easy to find. The Chicken Almond Salad is the best and the Potato Chowder, Tomato Dill Soup and Spanish Country Soup are my favorites soups. I will say that if you don't want to spend time in the kitchen, this cookbook may not be for you because many of the recipes are a little labor intensive. Also, as you might expect with a restaurant cookbook, many of the recipes are not compatible with a fat-restricted diet (some can easily be modified however).That being said, I would highly recommend this cookbook for its recipes that consistently turn out products that taste absolutely wonderful.

My wife loves the book. (Christmas present to her.)

Every recipe will draw rave reviews when you cook for everyone except your kids. I use main dishes for company and they believe I am a fantastic cook which is not bad for a 77yr old man.

The Catcher in the Rye was a book full with a lot of great imagery and a lot of thought put into it. The book is a very easy to read , it can be read very quickly and very easy to understand. I enjoyed reading this book due to the fact that the main character Holden Caulfield is a 16 year old boy growing up. Holden struggles with deciding whether he is grown up or if he is still a kid. Recently , getting kicked out of his school Pency Prep before Christmas Break due to poor grades and only being able to pass one class, he decides to go on a journey through New York. As he starts his adventure he talks about people he knows and cares about. Holden talks about how smart , red headed and friendly his brother Allie is and how he passed away due to Leukemia. Holden also tells the reader about his other two siblings D.B and Phoebe. D.B is Holden's brother in Hollywood and Phoebe is his little sister who still leaves with her parents. As the story goes on Holden claims that everyone he meets is a phony. Not only does he say that but he also lies to everyone he meets. He either changes his name or makes up a story on how he got there and why. Through out the book Holden shows that all he wants to do is sit down and talk to someone about the problems he goes through in his life but when someone tries to get close to him he pushes them away and makes up lies on why he can't be there with them and leaves. He mentions a lot a girl who used to live near by, Jane Gallagher . Holden explains how close he used to be to her when he has a child , and every adventure they did together. Later to reveal he is in a mental institute waiting to get out and go back to school. The most controversial part about this book is the fact that Holden is a heavy smoker. He tries to lie about his age just so he can get a couple drinks at a bar or he gets people to do it for him. Holden also uses a lot of profanity during the story. He also hires a prostitute in one part of the book. He talks about his sexual life and who he would like to be with. Definitely how a person going through puberty would feel like. I would recommend this book to kids who understand what Holden is going through or can relate to what he does and why he does, but then be of an age 16 or order due to the strong language he uses. Very controversial but a very realistic book.

Catcher in the Rye When books are placed on a banned list in many states it is usually for a lot factors adding up, such as inappropriate language or actions, themes highlighting problems and issues that teenagers could face or even exposure to the harsh realities of life. To many that spells trouble but to me it sounds like the perfect recipe for a captivating book. Most think it is a good idea to sugarcoat books but I like the honesty and themes that are portrayed in the stories like Catcher in the Rye. It doesn’t shy away from realistic scenarios like under aged drinking, troubled school dropouts, or insane asylums. The story’s New York in the 1950’s setting paints the scene for Holden Caulfield and his troubles. His first person flashback narrating gives us an in depth look at his personality and reasoning for things but even with the narration type we are still left with questions and curiosity about Holden because of things he does not reveal to us or things he doesn’t even understand himself. Even with this book’s edgy atmosphere many of the themes displayed throughout the story are types of innocence that Holden shows whenever faced with a strange or different situation he isn’t familiar with. At one point Holden is in his hotel room in New York and pays a prostitute, she doesn’t appear to be any older than him and sge refuses things like a cigarette and informs Holden she doesn’t smoke “It was a funny thing to say. It sounded like a real kid. You'd think a prostitute and all would say ‘Like hell you are’ or ‘Cut the crap’ instead of ‘Like fun you are.’” Another theme that arises is the theme of love or lust when Holden is constantly thinking about an ex-girlfriend of his and he is constantly faced with situations that force him between the two. All together I thought the book was a fantastic story that let the character fully develop and showed us his angel and devil on the shoulder type of personality.

I just don't get it. This was one of the most boring reads ever. I had to force myself to finish the book, short as it is. When I was 16 or 17, I knew who I was and what I wanted from life. I can find no basis for identifying with any of Holden's psychotic mental rantings. If you find yourself groundless and life to be a bewildering chaos, then maybe you can find some connection with this character, but I, for one, find Holden to be a narcissistic whiner, and I find this "classic" to be a complete disappointment. Oh, and for the reviewers who carry on about the symbolism: ok, it's there, but I think the "deep" symbolism that you gush over is trivial. But then, I'm a little jaded because one of my best friends wrote a novel that made the NYT Best Seller list; he says he did not purposely put ANY symbolism whatsoever into his story, but found that he later had to invent some in order to massage the egos of reviewers and readers who just KNEW that it was rife with multiple layers of symbolism. Wait a minute...maybe Sallinger did have a valid point, after all, with his treatment of society's phoniness. The bottom line for me: this book receives a ton of positive press, and I would love to have liked it, but the honest truth is I hated it.
