A few weeks ago, I saw a list of the best business books of all time. I was a bit proud of myself that I had read most of them--at had at least heard of the rest. For whatever reason, though, one book had escape me over the years: The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture. I was more than five years late, but figured that I owed it to myself to give it a read.I'm glad that I did.I had seen Battelle on Bloomberg West and he was particularly smart and articulate. My one initial hesitation with The Search: I had already read many books about Google. (I count Ken Auletta's book among my very favorites.) Did I really need to read yet another book about Larry and Sergey's company? But here's the rub: Battelle's book is hardly Google-specific. Rather, it's about the vast implications of being able to find an increasing amount of information within seconds, a trend that shows no signs of abating. Now, to be sure, you can't write a book about the history of search without delving into Google, but this is a book about so much more than one company. For instance, I learned a great deal about the role of Bill Gross and GoTo.com, a precursor to Google and the guy who cracked the nut on paid placements. I hadn't realized that Larry and Sergey modified Gross' central idea.A Glimpse of What's BeyondWhile I probably should have read this excellent text when it was released, in a way I'm happy that I stumbled upon it now. Sure, AOL and Yahoo! are not nearly as relevant today as they were when Battelle was hammering away on his Mac. But reading books like this years after their release allows you to assess the author's predictions ex post facto. Battelle's vision of then then-future in 2006 is, for the most part, panning out.On a general level, my very favorite business books do the following:* advance a big idea* teach me something new (not that easy to do, since I read many non-fiction, business, and technology books)* tell interesting stories* leave me wanting moreBattelle does all of the above with considerable aplomb. The man is a gifted writer and I can't wait for his next opus.Get. This. Book. Now.

Battelle's is a great book with amazing, captivating storytelling. I've only read one other industry book that I tell people is a must-have if you're in the IT business or into the web lifestyle, Stephen Segaller's "Nerds 2.01 - A Brief History of the Internet".Battelle's fine work is right up there with it.The book's main focus is primarily Google, but there's also a healthy dose of the other major players in the search game, like Amazon's A9, AltaVista, AllTheWeb, Yahoo and Microsoft. So there's a holistic view of the search industry, without leaving out any of the majors. The book does, in my opinion, lack a bit of the technical explanation behind Google's processes (I'm a software developer, so I like that kind of thing). I would have enjoyed reading more about Google's data center and distributed computing philosophies and the company's adoption of open source software (there are a couple of paragraphs dedicated towards detailing the former). Google rolled their own Linux implementation, which wasn't mentioned, and have pretty much put Python on the map as a programming, which also didn't make the final cut.But not taking anything away from Battelle's work - he does a fantastic job early on of breaking down web-wide search and the components involved. The book is still spot-on in terms of the strategy, financial profile, legal issues, unique corporate culture, human resources practices, adventures with venture investors, stock performance, insider interviews , horror stories, brutal truths and a historical look at the company. The final chapter, "Perfect Search" also talks about what's on the horizon for search, maintaining the belief that in all, web search is only 5% completed. It's fine writing. Pick this one up. Kudos, John - well done.

This book delivers all it promises and more. "The Search" takes the reader on a walk down memory lane, back when numerous search engines served the Internet's search needs. During the '90s, search engines such as Alta Vista, Lycos, Excite, HotBot, AOL Search, MSN and, of course, Yahoo, served us all the searches we needed-but, alas, they did not work in the long run and are now virtually obsolete.I remember how those SEs were visciously spammed and manipulated by Search Engine "Optimizers" (SEOs.) The search results were seldom relevant and porn links prevailed. (I recall the time when my 7-year-old son searched for "Pokemon" and landed at a hardcore porn site.)There had to be a better way. Then, out of the blue, appeared a new search engine that changed all the rules and introduced "link popularity." Search was never the same again. Now search results are ALWAYS relevant. In fact, Google always returns exactly the sites I look for. Amazingly, it sometimes even suggests what it THINKS I'm looking for. This book tells this story and more, in detail. Although Google is featured prominently in the book, the author discusses in depth the search industry as a whole. You'll read about how ambitious and hungry Google, the company, is and about the power it possesses over Internet users.Very engrossing reading. Highly recommended.

Obviously dated as it was published in the mid 2000s, but the content is still very relevant to anyone in the search business. I'd say the 2005 publish date is an asset as it illustrates what was in line with expectations and what has changed since the book was written.

First I must say, this book is most definitely one of Eric Jerome Dickey’s greater works. The Blackbirds is over five-hundred pages of greatness. Although you certainly don’t need to, I would suggest you read prior works of Eric Jerome Dickey’s before reading Blackbirds. While we are introduced to new characters like Indigo, Nancy, Eddie, and Cristiano, we’re also get reacquainted with old characters like Destiny and her father, Keith, from Chasing Destiny and Dr. Debra Dubois and Ericka Stockwell from Friends and Lovers. It was good to see Mrs. Jones, Destiny's mom, and Lola Mack (Sleeping With Strangers/Waking With Enemies) are still friends although we only read about them in passing. We also get to see old background characters like Kawanzaa Browne from Liar’s Game, Hakeem Mitchell from Cheaters, and Leonard DuBois, Jr., whom Debra was pregnant with in Friends and Lovers.Whew, that was a lot to get out. After Reading The Blackbirds, I had to literally sit still for a moment and think. This book took me on a journey through love, loss, death, independence, friendship, and the discovery of self. The story itself was so profound that I don’t feel I have the right words to explain it let alone enough words to do it justice, but here we go.Indigo Abdulrahaman is a beautiful, yet complicated woman. She knows what she wants and who she wants. She’s not afraid to go after it either. And I tell you what, if you think you’re going to disrespect her by going after “who” she wants, you've got another thing coming…or you’ll at least end up at Vickie Secrets buying another set of thongs.Kawanzaa Browne is one of the women in The Blackbirds whom I identified with the most. While the last time we seen her she was a little girl, hiding behind her mother’s legs just as she met her father for the “first time”, she has grown into a beautiful young woman. The heartbreak she felt behind what her ex-fiancé had done hit too close to home. But when a woman’s fed up, she meets a man who is one in five million and one who is twice the man her ex-man could ever even imagine being.Ericka Stockwell was thirteen years old the last time we saw her. Now she’s in her mid-thirties and in remission from cancer. Like all of us, Ericka is sick of cancer and has decided to live everyday like it’s her last. The antagonistic relationship between her and her mother is something that I can’t even put into words. Mrs. Stockwell needs to have a come to Y-H-W-H talk or it’s quite possible that crossing the wrong person is going to send her to meet Jesus way before her “Christian” soul is ready. But in the midst of all of Ericka’s trauma, she finds light, love, and surprisingly, her destiny.Speaking of destiny, the last time we saw Destiny Jones she had gone on a revenge spree that left a trail of broken, battered, and bleeding bodies in her wake. The one thing we learned about Destiny is she isn’t the one you want to cross and think you’re going to just get away with it. Even still, the court of public opinion can be brutal and even though people knew what had happened to her, Destiny is still seen as the villain. So the villain is who she became…at least in one scene. This is where Mr. Dickey took me on a journey of self-discovery. Throughout the book, Destiny’s chapters resonated with me more than any of the women. Yes, he managed to show me a little bit of myself in all of the women throughout the book; however, Destiny’s chapters had my emotions popping like fish grease. I cried. I laughed. And then I cried while laughing. Why? Because she’s Destiny Jones, bih, and she ain’t scared of you, mamafunkers!I could go on and on and on and on about this book, but I think I may have already said too much. One thing I must note, I want to say thank you, Eric Jerome Dickey, for telling and showing Black women that we are beautiful—flaws and all— in every color, shape, and size. Mr. Dickey showed us the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright disgraceful side of Black women. Black women aren’t merely investigated under some kind of biased microscope in this book. We’re celebrated in this book. The balance was so perfect that I cannot find anything I don’t like about The Blackbirds. Ericka’s very last chapter left me a snotty-nosed crying mess. I wasn’t ready! All-in-all, I give this book five pages (think five-stars). Nikki-Michelle recommends this book.

I would recommend this book to early readers. It had a start - stop unfinished pride effect that did not sit well with the story line. The author had a wonderful idea, 4 young African American woman educated and employed looking for true love, finding themselves and running from past hurts. Just not adequately executed.

Unlike previous works, this story was slow to start but once I recognized the characters (long time readers of EJD will figure them out) it picked up and ends well but the beginning made me give it 4 instead of 5. Ended up going back to re-read to reestablish the origins but this book CAN be read as a stand alone. Just be prepared to push through the first part. Maybe a prequel reminding (or introducing) the characters will make it easier to "jump in" this novel but its a good read if you hang in there.

I am totally an Eric Jerome Dickey fan! He had me at hello. I love his books and wait longingly online for Amazon to let me know a new one is coming. That being said, EJD's books sometimes tend to start slooooooooooooooow, as does this one. It took me a while to really sink my teeth into it and WANT to read it. The book's beginning is long and drawn out, throwing you smack dab into it without allowing you to test the water first. But, as a true EJD fan, I knew if I kept going, I would be rewarded with excellence. I was!!! This book makes me NEED to go back and read long lost ones, and even though it gives an ending, it's not a completely satisfying one, so I will wait for the next one. This book is worth purchasing. I am a collector of beautiful things, and this is a beautiful thing.

I loved the bond and friendship of the ladies. For me the dialog was just too much at times and it became unrealistic. Some things were so overly described I would forgot what the subject was at hand. I am a fan of Eric Jermone Dickey and I know people evolve but I miss his old writing style. I will read any follow-ups to this book because it seems as though there is room for a part 2.

I don't know how you keep doing this. How your mind works to create masterpiece after masterpiece. I laughed, cried, blushed, googled ( Hugo Boss "special condition"🤔 lol). Catching up with these young ladies was awesome. I gave myself a migraine trying to remember if Indigo was ever mentioned in a previous book. I was so angry with myself until I read your acknowledgments. I pride myself on knowing all characters from everyone of your books. Keep doing what you are doing. You are exceptional at it. The only thing I dislike about uour books is when they end. Patiently waiting for the next novel. 😘😘😘😘😘📗📘📙📖🖋🖊KEEP THEM COMING!

Dickey's writing style took a while for me to get use to, but ultimately he wowed me with his plot twists and profound portrayal of the complexities and beauty of women and their relationships. This is a book that I definitely am glad I purchased and will definitely re-read.

I have read several books by EJD and I was really looking forward to enjoying Blackbirds...and I'm still waiting. There was so much commentary in this book, it was hard to follow along with the story. There was no real plot and if it wasn't for the audible, I would've had no idea who was talking and to whom they were talking to. There were some interesting parts but they were short lived and few and far between. This was a book club selection for me and the only reason I made myself plow through it to the end. Really disappointed.

This book is delicious. There's no other way to put it. It is a delightful romp through Renaissance Europe, highlighting Hernando Colon's book buying trips in various places. It is a fantasy for any bibliophile, to have the freedom and resources to travel and build one's own library at the same time. An intellectual feast not to be missed!

This is an extensively researched book about the life of Hernando Colon, son of Christopher Columbus, and the Biblioteca Colombina he created in 1539. Prior to his death Hernando collected between 10,000 and 20,000 items for his library, including over 3000 books. His library was organized using a system he created for it and was the first library to use bookshelves where the books were shelved vertically. He collected any paper object that struck his fancy, including playing cards and lyrics to songs. This was a fascinating read about one man’s bibliomania and his desire to collect every book on every subject. It is well written and doesn’t get overly bogged down in the author’s research.

Intriguing history

I now have a special place in my heart for Hernando Colón. His collections and organizational systems are totally mind-boggling and absolutely fascinating. As a "natural son" (not the product of a legitimate union) Colón could "win legitimacy only by showing himself to be his father's son in spirit." Colón strove to achieve this distinction by accumulating massive amounts of written works, printed images, music, and plants to create a collection that would far surpass any other collection of its time. Colón also kept meticulous details in multiple ledgers and created complex organizational systems. This book dives into some of Colón's collections, examines particular items in the collection, offers insight into why some items were especially important to Colón and analyzes why some were never discussed by the collector. This book is very dense and I wouldn't recommend it to the average book lover but if you're ready to go on a deep dig then this is the book for you!

I was intrigued--Columbus had a son who created the world's greatest library? Why hadn't we heard about him? What happened to all the books? How did he even embark on such a quest? I had to read this book.Hernando may have been an illegitimate son but in 1502 his father Christopher Columbus took the thirteen-year-old along on his fourth voyage to the New World. Hernando started his life familiar with lands and cultures that most of the world didn't even know existed. The book recounts Columbus's discoveries and his struggle to maintain his status and share of New World wealth for his heirs. The Admiral of the Ocean reigned as the greatest explorer for only a short time before he was dethroned. He became old news as successive explorers stole attention and acclaim. Spain sought to discredit Columbus as the first to discover the New World, desirous of keeping all the New World wealth. Hernando determined to return and solidify his father's status by writing a book about his father's life--essentially the first biography. The other part of the book is Hernando's thirst for knowledge, his obsession with collecting books of every kind, in every language--even if he couldn't read them. He collected prints and maps and art and ephemera gleaned from small booksellers. He kept lists of his books and when he lost over a thousand books in a shipwreck he knew which ones he needed to replace. He developed methods to catalog and organize the books and to retrieve the information in the books.Hernando was called upon to create a definitive map of the New World so that Spain and Portugal could finalize their territorial rights. He began an exhaustive dictionary but abandoned it knowing he could never finish it.As he traveled across Europe, Hernando came into contact with all the great thinkers whose ideas were rocking the world: Erasmus, Luther, Rabelais, Thomas More. During Hernando's lifetime, Henry was looking to divorce Catherine, Suleiman was conquering the Eastern reaches of Europe, and the Holy Roman Emperor was crowned as the head of church and state. Luther's teaching had fueled the Peasant's Revolt and the anti-authoritarian Anabaptist movement arose. In his later life, Hernando settled down and built his house and perfected his library. His garden was an arboretum containing plants and trees from across the world.Hernando's achievement was remarkable. His goal to order all human knowledge for accessible retrieval was monumental. But after his death, most of his work and library were lost to neglect and time.Through the life of one man, The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books gave me a panoramic view of the 16th c., an overview of the life and achievements of Christopher Columbus, and a biography of his son Hernando.I received a free ebook from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

Edward Wilson-Lee has chosen to gift readers with the story of Hernando Colon, the illegitimate son of Christopher Columbus. This book is so much more than just Hernando's story. It is also the story of what happened to Christopher Columbus after the voyage we all learned about in school. Hernando accompanied Columbus on several voyages, and wrote a biography of his father. Hernando had a mission to create a fantastic library (he succeeded in 1539).I found the book a slow read, but so worthwhile. I appreciated this addition to history and the complexity of Hernando's life and travels. Mr. Wilson reveals the secrets of the amazing library Hernando set out to gather. Colon was a true adventurer, and the story of his life is interwoven with the tales of fantastic books, their subjects and authors, as well as music, plants and artifacts. The bibliophile in me is in awe of the collection, between 10 and 20,000 books all carefully documented - so beneficial when he lost over 1,00 in a shipwreck, he had a list of what to replace! The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books is by no means an easy read. There is a wealth of information, and I found it easiest to absorb in small sections. This would make an excellent book discussion selection, as there are so many avenues to explore and discuss.I received my copy through NetGalley and am under no obligation to the publisher.
