This was a great book that covered almost everything I was looking for. The edition I read (5TH edition) did not include anything about CRISPER, but the latter is now easily found on YouTube.

Book that was necessary for class. Wasn't the most interesting read, sometimes it got confusing, but hey that's genetics.

Although I'm hating this class right now because of the lack of teaching skills from my instructor this book is easy to understand and puts it all together nicely! First college book that deserved my money lol

The language in the book is the way too confusing!! The questions on the back of each chapter are not clear, it seems like one question can have so many different answers.

Pros:- page quality is good-- same as every hard-cover textbooks.- Large texts so it's very easy to read, especially if you have to cram 2-3 chapters over 1 night.- Pictures & diagrams are life-savers. They're probably the best thing about this book. You can easily understand concepts by looking at them for just a few seconds.- book is pretty thin- my professor literally follows the book, so if I miss a lecture or space out during class, I can just read the book and be perfectly fine for testsCons:- Sometimes it gets a bit wordy. I feel like they could've worded it better for cleaner, more precised explanations (of course, after I understood the concept)

The text was pretty good. There were times where the language was confusing but overall it was good.The only thing is that if your professor is making you buy the online homework system affiliated with this textbook, I recommend just purchasing the paper copy online. It's less than twenty dollars and you can put the chapters in your binder as you need to. And you can write all over it.I rented the textbook from Amazon. Delivery was fast and return was easy.

This and Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals" are my two favorite books about the miraculous life of Abraham Lincoln.I began reading about Lincoln as a teenager (I'm now 75). I was enthralled by Sandburg's multi-volume work, and the biographies written by other authors 50-60 years ago whose names I no longer recall. But today's scholarly writers, like Donald, have profited from the amazing amount of material about Lincoln which has emerged since the 30's and 40's, making all of those earlier works pale in comparison. Even Lincoln's own personal secretaries didn't get it quite right when they authored their version of the life of their mentor a few short years after his assassination (a work they continued to revise for many years thereafter).I strongly recommend this and Goodwin's efforts above all other works about Abe.I do not agree that Donald's book is dry -- or that his characterization of Lincoln lacks the spark due him. I found it informative, straightforward, and more than adequately faithful concerning his subject. I recently finished reading the two volume "Lincoln: Speeches and Writings 1832-1858 and 1859-1865 (Library of America)" and found much of Lincoln as disclosed in his own writing captured by Donald in his book.

When General Grant's army captured Richmond, President Lincoln wanted to see the place in person. Perhaps to regale in the relief that the four-year travail of war was really coming to an end. He stepped ashore, and he was noticed by a crew of black workers. Their foreman exclaimed, "Bless the Lord, there is the great Messiah! ...Glory, Hallelujah!"As Professor Donald skillfully demonstrates, however, Abraham Lincoln was only human. He had just a single year of school, but he was an enthusiastic reader. After a few years as handyman, manual laborer, and store clerk, he became a lawyer. Then a politician. This meticulously researched book gives insight into the life and mind of Abraham Lincoln. I've always admired Lincoln; he's always been my favorite president. This book, for me, humanized him, and in so doing made me admire him even more.I'd never realized the political tightrope he navigated during his first presidential term as he struggled to hold the union together while at the same time balancing the differing political priorities of his senior advisors and members of his cabinet.For those today who insist that the Civil War was about state's rights, this book makes it absolutely clear that the root cause of the war was slavery.It's fascinating to see how Lincoln's beliefs about African Americans evolved over the years. From his early years when he supported settling the freed slaves in their own independent country, to the end of his life when he came to believe that the freed men deserved to be fully franchised citizens of the United States, Herbert does an excellent job of showing how and why his beliefs evolved.This is not a fast read, but it is a very interesting book. I strongly recommend it for anyone who is interested in the history of the USA or who follows national politics. It is very relevant today in light of all the political debate about Black Lives Matter.This book will stay with me for a long time and has made me even more of an admirer of Lincoln, the president and the man.

You can always tell a good biography by how you feel. If you feel like you are in the action, maybe sitting in the corner watching the events unfold, then that's a great biography. Well, this book is a great in that sense. It makes you feel like you are part of Lincoln's personal and professional life and it's an absolute page turner. With the volume of books written about Lincoln you can go as deep as you want, this book isn't deep. It is rather complete though.

I really enjoyed not only of the authors life, but the recipes too! I am also in love with Sardena and hope to relocate there soon.

You cannot categorise this book - it is what it is - brilliant. One man's personal transition to life in Sardinia written with honesty, insecurity and moments of hilarity. Great insights into the culture and history of a nation within a nation, and belly-laughs at regular intervals. And recipes, lots of recipes that elicit a Pavlovian response throughout. A real joy to read.

I love this funny and very human book. The trials and tribulations of this adventurous director as he negotiates his art, and gastronomy, in a new and sometimes perplexing culture are heartwarming. His quirky and mischievous approach to the theatre is particularly appealing. I will definitely be trying some of the recipes - the section on agro-tourism made me feel I was there!

A fantastic read !! Funny, intelligent and informative. Brings all the charm of the Mediterranean to you page by page. A must for any traveller of the region.

I've always appreciated Sheryl Attkison's reporting, so was eager to hear her perspective on this subject. She distills in these pages why the voice in the back of your head whispers "hypocrisy", "bias", "coordinated attack". It provides the insight and evidence that we've come to expect in her reporting, and opens the curtains of the smear industry so we might peer in and be prepared to spot when the smear is in play (hint...it's everywhere!). It's like a cipher key to consuming today's media.

I look forward to Sharyl Attkisson's Full Measure every week. I appreciate that her reporting is indepth, relevant, and not focused on whatever the "hot" topic of the day is. One of my greatestfrustrations is that that most Sunday morning "news" programs (Meet the Press, Face theNation, This Week, etc.) are almost carbon copies of each other, sub out Chuck Todd forGeorge Stephanopoulos or John Dickerson. The lineups are nearly identical and both thecommentators and the guests seem to be on very limited talking points. Really the onlydifference comes down to style and preference much like the difference between a Toyota anda Honda. I prefer Face the Nation to Meet the Press much like someone might prefer the Accord to a Camry. The little nuances make them feel different but really they are almost the same.Attkisson's program is different. She is not a political reporter although her work does encompass the political - how could it not? Instead her stories are focused on reporting news like America's nuclear waste or the potential impacts of gadolinium not recycling opinions about Trump or Clinton. She also appears to be fairly balanced in her reporting; while I can watch most shows and be able to say without a doubt whether the host leans right or left, I would not be so quick to judge Attkisson's politics. This is important because this a major reason I was drawn to The Smear. Attkisson strikes me as what reporters should be - as neutral as possible (recognizing that by thenature or being human there is always some level of bias). I also was incredibly appreciative of the fact that I learned about her book not from her shamelessly plugging it on her show (like somany hosts do ) but from an interview she gave on another show, not even on her network.The premise of The Smear is that we live in an age where the news media is corrupted bysmear campaigns conducted by partisan interests trying to blur what is fact and fiction.According to Attkisson many reputable media sources have been compromised by journalistsand/or producers willingness to accept and even solicit the narratives distributed by partisansources masquerading as neutral non-profits, think tanks, etc. Instead of conductingindependent investigations and/or trying to find balance for news stories, news media is tossingjournalistic ethics to the wind for easy pieces fed to them by partisan interests and â€œsmearartists.â€In some ways I think the term â€œblurâ€ is a more appropriate term for what is happening. The intent is to confuse and/or distract from the issue so that the less favorable narrative ishidden/discredited and the more favorable narrative is marketed/shared. These smears/blurs are instigated through outright lies/fiction , the misconstruing of grains of truth, illegal planting of/manipulation of information, and/or astroturfing. When consumers canâ€™t tell what is fact from fiction, the truth is easier to manipulate. In clearly organized detail, Attkisson lays out the progressively more prevalent takeover of media by â€œsmear artistsâ€ and the eventual evolution to what is now been coined as â€œfake news.â€ Interestingly though many of those demanding that fake news be suppressed, are the original architects of smear tactics. Attkisson also shares examples how smear campaigns are conducted by governments (including our own) as well as partisan interests outside of government.While The Smear is a very worthy read, it was not quite what I had expected. In many ways thebook felt like a hit job (a smear perhaps?) on David Brock, and to a lesser extent, Hillary Clinton, et.al. Brock is portrayed as a villainous puppet master much as the Koch's were portrayed in Jane Mayer's Dark Money. Their roles in the development of smear is unquestionable but I couldnâ€™t help but wonder why it seemed as if only token coverage was given to some laudable conservative smear artists. Regardless of the culpritâ€™s political leanings, the mechanistic techniques remain the same; I just wish that there was a little more balance of sides, which is surprising because I have always felt like Sharyl Attkisson was balanced. In this case I think the she lost a little of that.My other critique is a stylistic one. In the introduction she warns that a lot of her sources asked to remain anonymous for obvious reasons when you read the book. Even so I wish she gavemore detailed citation of facts/articles (footnotes, bibliography, something). As I read about different events, articles, etc., I found myself regularly checking online sources to verify/find more information. This felt awkward given the book calls into question many of the online checking sources I had to employ (including Google).Even with the mild partisan imbalance and the citation protocols used, the core message of TheSmear is one that needs to be heard and heeded. Just over ten years ago Larry Beinhart gavecaution to similar issues in his book Fog Facts. His work was largely ignored. With SharylAttkissonâ€™s reputation and more focused attention on the subject, perhaps now the message can be heard and the spiral of media smear can be curtailed.

This book documents political smear campaigns, behind-the-scenes coordination between the press and political campaigns and other special interests, and efforts by our own government to manipulate the news, influence public opinion, and punish whistleblowers. Although some events in the book go back to the 1990's, most of the information pertains to events of the last ten years, with the emphasis on the 2016 presidential campaign and its aftermath.Those who follow politics closely will not be surprised by Attkisson's narrative, but some will be surprised by the extent of the shenanigans she describes - the vast scope of media manipulation, the huge sums of money, and the number of people involved. Worst of all, our own government seems to be an active player in much of this.Although smears and media manipulation come from both sides of the political spectrum, more than 80% of what Attkisson describes comes from the left.Among her most serious allegations:1. Many op-eds that you read on the editorial page are not written by the person whose byline appears beneath them, but by activists working for political campaigns, corporations, and special-interest groups.2. The Obama Department of Justice and other Obama agencies targeted reporters, stonewalled investigations, and maintained behind-the-scenes relationships with special interests.3. The federal government creates fake Internet identities to flood social media with propaganda in support of, or against, various policies, media outlets, or individuals. Fake Internet identities are also created by hired consultants and political operatives4. In the 2016 presidential campaign, there was back-and-forth collusion between the Clinton campaign, the DNC, and major media outlets.5. Left-wing consultants and operatives conspire to dig up dirt on conservative media personalities with the intent of forcing them off the air. Fox News in its entirety has even been targeted.6. When you see numerous media outlets use almost the identical language and phrasing to describe a story, it is no accident; they are responding to cues given them by paid political operatives.This book should alert the naÃ¯ve, confirm the suspicions of the wary, and shame professional journalists. It will NOT shame the spinmeisters and scandal-mongers who earn big money by corrupting politics, journalism, government, corporations, special interests, and the entire fabric of our social media.I give the book four stars instead of five mainly because it is not properly footnoted, a deficiency which critics will no doubt bring up. Sources are usually referenced, but specific footnotes giving actual dates are not provided. I do not doubt the sourcing because I specifically remember many of incidents described by Attkisson when they were first reported, but footnotes would have been helpful.Another quibble is that Attkisson seems to alternate between present and past tense, perhaps because much of the book was written as events were actually unfolding.Finally, the book has what I consider to be some major omissions. Most notably, there is no mention of the "Plamegate" controversy during the Bush administration, when the media conducted a two-year smear campaign of innuendo against the Bush administration even though the media almost certainly knew they were pushing a false narrative.

This book is indispensable for anyone wanting insight into the current media climate. I wish it had been available prior to the 2016 election. It would have proved an invaluable tool for evaluating the often confusing and conflicting media themes. I will be far more discriminating in my "news" consumption from now on. Sharyl is an absolute treasure for those of us who depend on getting correct information on which to base our opinions and decisions.

I had my employer purchase the other book they wrote (for the health care) so I think they are pretty similar. I do not think it's worth it. All there is in the book is some screenshots and the texts are mostly from MSDN and other MS documents. I am trying to find a real good BizTalk book but can't, I mean a book like those that I have for Oracle, by Tom Kyte (by they way Tom Kyte helps write a lot of the Oracle docs so he just refers his readers to those docs and does not copy them again in his books).

Since working with BizTalk for several years in the supply chain management Industry, there have been several occasions where I have needed some sort of guidance. Finally there is something out there!! After searching for an adequate guide I have stumbled upon this book and it provides me with just the answers I need. It is compact enough that I donâ€™t need to trudge around thousands of pages of information. It is short and to the point, this is one of my favorite things about this book.

Being new to the world of BizTalk, I find myself depending on this book more and more as I develop. This resource has allowed me to move forward through projects with greater efficiency and clearer understanding of BizTalk processes. EDI for Supply Chain Management has doubtlessly eliminated what would have been some confusing situations in my learning process. If you are struggling with BizTalk/EDI, buy this book!!

I got this book shortly after having watched the first film. The movie really drew me in and I had to have it. Now, altogether, I think I like the film much better than the book, but the novel has its merits too without a doubt.I see a lot of reviews talking about how the characters were without personality, boring, unreadable, flat. In some ways I do understand the frustration. At times it's near impossible to read what is going on exactly, BUT I think I've found purpose to what so many deem madness. I mean, these are kids who woke up in a strange place with no memory of who they are, where they came from. To top it all off, they're trapped in a maze crawling with monsters at night. And no matter how much they try to escape, they can't. They have lived in a place with no idea of what they were, who they were supposed to be, or what they ARE supposed to be now. For me, it would only make sense for a stagnant environment to produce stagnation in the people occupying it. I know that may be reaching a little bit - but it's what has helped me to manage through the book with a peaked interest.I couldn't put the novel down. Overall, I find the concept of the story good. And despite the blank slates of many characters, they are still fairly likable (except for Alby. Book Alby worked my absolute last nerve. He was a complete 360 from his movie self and I have never hated a character so much so quickly. I disliked him more than Gally >:( ). All in all, the movie made me want to dive directly into The Scorch Trials, so it definitely did something right. Honestly, I think the biggest issue that most people can agree with is the lack of personality in the characters. But in my perspective, I can kind of make it work in my head! I look forward to continuing these books.

The Maze Runner? (Rolls eyes so hard she can see her brain) Meh, it was forgettable...and aggravating! In fact, I can distinctly remember the day-to-day struggle I had with the book! Days where I would dread the fact that I had to pick up The Maze Runner and suffer reading through the endless chapters that give you no answers, no purpose to The Maze, no clear objective, annoying and pointless characters that you feel no connection to, and hopelessness.Hmm, okay, have you ever played Monkey in the Middle? Well, imagine you are the monkey in the middle, you have Thomas (the lead character) on one end, and James Dashner (the author) on the other end. Okay, now imagine James Dashner holding a mysterious black velvet drawstring which holds all the answers you are dying to get your hands on. Okay, now picture Thomas and Dashner cackling as they toss the drawstring back and forth over your head. At first, you chuckle and say something like, "Oh, come on guys," then 30 chapters later, while they continue to play their silly game, you give up on the attempt to intercept the drawstring, and crossing your arms you say something like, "Okay, this is getting really annoying."Finally, after 60 chapters, you decide to walk up to Dashner and rashly kick him right on the chin and you shout, "ENOUGH!" And in your disgraceful moment of defeat and frustration, Dashner "thoughtfully" hands over the black velvet drawstring, so as to say, "All right, I'm sorry." You gasp, and then squeal, AT LAST! YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS! You fall to your knees and madly begin to open up the black velvet drawstring, "This is it! This is it!" you exclaim to yourself, only to uncover....complete and utter darkness; yep, nothing. The bag was empty the entire time.Then, as your gaze moves steadily up at Dashner, you take notice that he is frowning, and smiling, and laughing all while staring at Thomas, who is responding in the same manner. And then it hits you, they are able to converse telepathically! What in the world!? Argh!So you get up, take a deep breath, sweep whatever Dashner dust-bunnies have settled onto your jeans and shoulders, and begin to walk away from their wicked scheme; who needs those guys anyway? Rude! But just as you are storming off, Dashner runs up to you, laughing irritatingly while trying to catch his breath and says, "Okay, okay," his arms up in surrender, "I'm done, here take this, you'll want to read this," and just like that, he walks over to Thomas (who is laughing hysterically by the way), they pat themselves on the back, as to congratulate each other, and they walk away.You shake your head in utter confusion and look down at the single sheet of paper resting on the palm of your hand, you unfold it, it's an epilogue. The best darn thing Dashner wrote in the entire book!

This is a horror book filled with nastiness, lack of empathy, and most revoltingly, the idea that it's reasonable and morally correct to torture and kill children in the name of possibly saving the human race. This book is not that helpful, chapters are super long, and it doesn't explain concepts well enough in my opinion. I hate it.

This is an extremely well written non fiction account about a lady with terminal cancer, her end of life journey, and her relationship with her entire family, especially her son. Certainly she was as close to her entire family, but the author is her son and a good deal of the story revolves around their part of this journey. Both the mother and son are life long readers. They spend a good deal of time together and form their own "book club" discussion group. Some, but not all, of the literature involves subject matter directly or indirectly to this current shared experience.The story is very sensitive. The author discusses many of the issues involved in end of life care. Seemingly simple questions, such as how one is feeling right now are evaluated. I found this personally valuable as I tend to be socially inept. The writing is of a modern style and flows easily. I listened it the book on audiobook while reading at the same time. The book would in most ways be an "easy listen" without contemporaneous visual reading except there are a lot of foreign names and locations mentioned.The author's mother had spent her life in various international projects and dealing with issues such as refugees, among other things. The author provided a good deal of information about many of these projects and issues, that I found very educational.As I anticipated, there was also a good deal of discussion about literature. As a lifelong reader, I am always interested in evaluating and comparing my reading experience and interests with others. I will tell you I learned a good deal about a good many authors and works with which I was not heretofore familiar. I purchased several works based on the literature discussed in this work. Coincidentally I am reading the works of Herman Wouk in chronological order. I had actually recently decided to skip a novel, "Marjorie Morningstar". I had never heard anyone discuss that book, ever.... Then that book came up in this work. I have changed my mind and purchased it and it is my next Herman Wouk book that I am going to read, although not immediately.In summary, I found he book to be very illuminating and educational while being very warm and sensitive. I enjoyed it very much and am very glad I had a chance to read it.

Although none of us like to think about the inevitable death of a loved one (or our own), we know those times are going to come. The book was insightful in learning things to say and do, as well as what NOT to say and do for a person who is dying. Reading and discussing books, thus the title of this book, becomes a constant as they travel this journey of her departure. The author's mother was a remarkable woman, she lived her life to the fullest every possible moment. So many positive, and worthwhile, reviews have been written about this book, I don't know what I can add. The negative from reviewers seem to focus on the families wealth and upper class lifestyle which seems a shame as this woman labored tirelessly to make the world of refugees a better place. She didn't seem to neglect her family or herself while helping others. She lived as she believed. The author shared his heart and by doing so, honored the legacy of his mother. Well done.

One of the members of my book club chose this book for our meeting in November. I started reading this thinking it might take me a while. I could not put it down. The story of the author and his mother having their own book club was interesting. Even more interesting was the story of one courageous woman who continued to live her life to the fullest during the cancer years of her life. I love this book. I found that I was bookmarking things to go back to read later, then I went back and highlighted items. I love this book!!!

This is the true story of a mother diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and her son, a book editor, who shared a love of reading and frequent book discussions during her last months. While I essentially liked the book, I did get a bit irritated by the overall privilege of this family and the mother's tight control of an uncontrollable situation. She had done a lot of humanitarian work, and in this book, came across as practically ready for canonization. She was also very controlling of her family, to the point of shopping for a suitable funeral outfit for her daughter, to dictating the posts for her son's blog about her illness, to telling them what color ink to use as they wrote acknowledgments for the sympathy letters they would receive.
