Crickets and Katydids, Concerts and Solos

From Library Journal

Known for his ability to present complex scientific information clearly and entertainingly, Dethier introduces crickets, katydids, and grasshoppers (locusts), whose sounds, though familiar, are largely ignored by all but specialists. He writes of his experiences in the late 1930s, when as a graduate student he served as field assistant to the late George W. Pierce, famous for his work on insect sound production and detection. Dethier takes us on an informative and entertaining summer's tour of insects in the Franklin, New Hampshire area and acquaints us with their habits and songs. Not intended as an exhaustive treatment or field guide, his book does list important references of the past century and gives keys to species and their songs. Rorer's charming black-and-white drawings adorn the text. Admirers of Dethier's previous works, e.g., To Know a Fly (1962), will welcome his latest effort.- Annette Aiello, Smithsonian Tropical Research Inst., PanamaCopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

Richly written, elegantly organized, and beautifully illustrated with Abigail Rorer's graceful line drawings, this charming reminiscence succeeds on every level. It illuminates the habits of New England's 40 or so orthopteran insects and teaches us to appreciate their adaptations and variation. It reminds us to attend to the world around us; to listen to its jubilant songs, breathe in the 'winey evanescence' of fallen apples and savor the caress of cool air flowing from the fringes of a shady hardwood forest. It recalls the pleasures of being young, of finding new facts and seeing new patterns in the mosaic of nature, and captures the ineffable sensations of a fine New England summer. (John R. Alden Smithsonian Magazine)This book is the product of Vincent Dethier's experiences studying the natural history and singing behavior of crickets and katydids. The book chronicles the emergence of orthopteran species over the summer season and their contributions to the chorus in fields and woods. The details of these insects' lives are fascinating, but I was even more impressed with the true theme of the book: the making of a scientist...This is a beautifully written natural history book. (Elizabeth Braker Ecology)[This book] can be enjoyed by anyone with even a passing interest in crickets and their repertoires. Dethier's writing is beautiful, almost poetic. (Jonathan Beard New Scientist)

#2,272,861 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

In the late afternoon of a late summer day when the sun turns a room to amber, someone has left behind a thin book with an awkward name. It tells of heard, but unseen, things beyond the windows, of katydids and fiddling crickets. The author was, at the time, a young man during the Great Depression. He wrote of those days more than fifty years later with a clear mind and the lovely touch of a poet who worked in prose. He had been, in the early 1930's, an apprentice entomologist roaming the fields of Massachusetts. He not only noticed things most people rarely see. He sought those things out.He wrote well of humans, the old ones gathered nightly to watch the locomotive thunder by. He wrote equally well of cows "gloriously drunk" on long-fallen apples. But he wrote best of all about insects, of collecting crickets at night in a graveyard. He honored the locust, lauding their "tenure on Earth exceeding the period of occupation of human beings and an ability to compete successfully with people."Finally, he wrote movingly of summer shutting down and autumn nearing. He saw the once fresh and brilliant flowers fading to the "colors of the aged" and the "rough and tweedy" fields "as though an old brown woolen jacket had been thrown over them to ward off the chill."Above all, this overlooked book is about the virtues of listening and paying attention, hearing the hidden things that also have value in their lives, and in ours.

This book by the author of To Know A Fly recounts Dethier's experiences as a graduate student in the 1930's doing field research in New Hampshire on the sounds made by crickets, katydids, locusts, and grasshoppers. In order to make recordings of these "songs" it was first necessary to capture the insects and much of this book describes his work in the field tracking down all the local varieties in a wide range of ecologies. He also gives technical explanations of how the sounds are produced. The technology was not available at the time, but I found myself wishing throughout the book that I could actually hear the sounds while reading about them. A companion CD would be much appreciated! This book is interesting but lacks the charm of his other books, particuarly To Know a Fly and The Ecology of a Summer House.

Starting from the field laboratory at Franklin, New Hampshire and covering other areas in New England, Vincent Dethier introduces us to the rhythmic grace of the orthopterans. Each species of crickets, grasshoppers, katydids, etc. with their own songs to play while each individual played those songs with different styles. It is the 1930s at the time of the Depression. While at the field laboratories, Dethier who is a graduate student working with a professor during the summertime, record and interpret these songs. They work together to capture the songs of the unseen individuals in the fields. Behaviors of the orthopteran change as summer passes and autumn approaches, which are heard in the song they play for Mother Nature. This natural history book is written in a well-organized first person perspective. The moment I picked up this book, I did not have much knowledge or understanding of crickets nor did I know what katydids were. This was not just a book that an entomologist could enjoy. “Crickets and Katydidss, Concerts and Solos,” educated me on the subject of orthopterans in a more artistic approach. The text was written accurately but was slightly difficult to keep up with some vocabulary. Finishing the book had a very satisfying feeling and also relief. Some points were redundant and lost my attention for a bit but learned a lot on the behaviors or crickets, grasshoppers, and locust. This book has definitely changed my way of enjoying scenery and cricket chirps. The book is written like a personal journal and the way Dethier shows his perspective while changing yours is beautifully executed. I recommend this book if you want a chill read as a music lover but you must also have an interest in entomology.

As I write this, just before an October dawn, a lone cricket fiddles a lonesome song. At daybreak he'll yield to hungry katydids chomping on our outdoor plants. As I listen, I think back to the times I read and reread this remarkable book. I first learned of it many years ago from an obituary of the author, Vincent Dethier, a former zoology professor at UMass. The book is an enthralling account of insect sounds as spring and summer wane into autumn. Superbly written in a style familiar to devotees of old nature books, the descriptions flow as smoothly as maple syrup. I'll surely read it again and again. I hope you do too.

I loved this little treasure trove from Taiwan, which is why I'm giving it 5 stars. The only downside was that I really wish it had more stories. I had a few favorite tales too, such as The Bride of Lord Snake, which made me think of Beauty and the Beast. It was researching more for that tale that I found Mr. Lobb's fascinating blog.Thank you for such a treasure, Mr. Lobb.

There can't be many people dying to read translations of Taiwanese folktales, but if you're one of them, this book is perfect. If you're not one of them, but have an interest in languages and cultures, you'll find it very worthwhile. As someone who works in Taiwan but doesn't speak Chinese, I feel I understand Taiwanese people a bit better after reading it. Also, I've found the idioms especially useful when designing teaching materials for Taiwanese students.

This nice compilation stands as testament to architectural elegance, engineering ingenuity, perseverance and the triumph of two good people filled with passion and creativity. The London Eye started from the brilliant minds of architects (and husband and wife) David Marks and Julia Barfield. In time, "more than 2,000 other people were involved in the Eye's creation." This book takes you from two to 2,000. Like the Eye itself, it's a heck of a ride. It's standard now to be a great fan of the Eye. But the book skillfully catalogs a different time: that of the beginnings when skepticism and, in some cases, outright hostility threatened to kill the idea in its infancy. It took a couple of well-placed supporters in the press (writer Mira Bar-Hillel and editor Stewart Steven of the Evening Standard) and business (CEO Bob Ayling of British Airways) to make the idea fly.Still, there was a time when all the smart money and the bandwagon was lined up behind the lamentable Millennium Dome. The difference between the two: behind the Eye was, according to Bob Ayling, "a team that was committed to achieving something...and if something needed to be done we got it done. We took decisions very quickly and we put the financial structure in place to make it succeed. The Dome, on the other hand, was a political project that become a politicised project." In short, doomed for failure.By the time of the Eye's assembling in the Thames and its hoisting - a technical feat of majesty and a signature event in itself - the world had top-sided. It was Wheel: triumphant. Its outline has become "shorthand for London." The Dome has met a much different history.Beyond the story the book tells, it's a wonderful picture book. It mixes high-quality color and black & white plates with original sketches and reprints of significant London front pages capturing key events,

This is not a book for the casual reader, or as just a souvenir of a visit to the London Eye. This is an in-depth book (TRULY in-depth) that takes you right through all the history, planning, engineering, construction, roadblocks, and eventual realization of this London icon. Photos are just fantastic. You'd have to be a true fan of the Eye (or an engineer or someone in construction) to really read this book from cover to cover. For the rest of us, the book is worth the price for the pictures alone.

this book is an excellent one to share with professionals from architects to financial experts. It tells the whole story of the eye from the spark that created the idea, through the benchmarks and tribulations, to the sureal reflection on how it could have gone differently. This amazing story along with the moving visuals make this a must-share, must-own, and must read.

"McMullen's book is a user-friendly guide to the flowering plants of the Galápagos Islands written for the average visitor with a general interest in botany.... This is an excellent book that definitely fills a need. It is a field guide to be recommended to every Galápagos visitor with an interest in plant life." (Nordic Journal of Botony)"The format and aids provided will enable less knowledgeable readers to use it and identify plants. It should be of interest to anyone who has visited the Galápagos Islands or plans to in the future or just wants to learn more about the unique and threatened flora." (Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society)"Darwin visited the Galápagos in 1835, collected plants, and later wrote about the finches. This attractive guide by McMullen will introduce many of the plants Darwin saw (and collected), and it is certain to become an indispensable companion for anyone fortunate enough to visit these islands.... Surprisingly, many introduced and cultivated plants well known throughout the tropics are also featured in this guide, their showy flowers likely to attract the novice botonist.... Brief essays on the history of botanical exploration, vegetation types, and conservation will entertain readers cruising from island to island, or dreaming of visiting this land of giant tortoises." (Choice)"The field guide should meet the needs of both of its intended audiences.... Large public and academic libraries will find this guide a valuable addition to their collections wherever there is interest in tropical biology or travel." (E-Streams)"This book is destined to be a valuable resource for the amateur naturalists who have made the Galápagos their destination of choice." (Libraries Unlimited)"This is a well-organized, small, but information-packed book.... It is, however, a valuable reference book for travelers to the Islands." (HortScience)"Combining important basic information about the flora of the islands with thorough plant descriptions and high-quality photographs, this well-written book fills a definite need." (Ole Jorgen Hamann, Director, Botanic Garden, University of Copenhagen)"Flowering Plants of the Galápagos provides short descriptions, an easy-to-use key, numerous natural history observations, and many hypotheses about how and from where the species arrived to the area. Conley K. McMullen gives amateur botanists, travelers, tourists, and anybody else with an interest in natural history a good introduction to the plants and botany on the Galápagos Islands." (Peter H. Raven, Director, Missouri Botanical Garden)"This well-organized book is comprehensive and easy to use. The introduction to the natural history of the islands and to their ecological zones are excellent, as are the keys and plant descriptions." (Margaret D. Lowman, Director of Research and Conservation, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens)"Visitors to the Galápagos Islands will find this to be an invaluable guide to the flora. Technical language has been reduced to a minimum in order to make it possible for amateurs to identify the most common plants they are likely to encounter." (Peter R. Grant, Princeton University)

Excellent book to identify the flora of the Galapagos Islands as easily as 1-2-3. Easily used by the specialist and non-specialist interested in flowering plants. The introduction provides an overall view of the history, geology, climate and evolutionary adaptation of plants to the various habitats found on the islands. The main portion of the text is arranged by plant color as well as plant statue such as herbs, trees and shrubs which allows for easy identification of an unknown flower speciman. The identification provided for each species included a physical description along with photograph and the natural history of the plant. Because of the number of the plants established on the islands not all plants are included, so other text will have to consulted for the real unknowns, but a majority of the plants a visitor will come in contact with are listed.

Arrived as expected. Item was exactly what I ordered. Excellent experience.

excellent info but bad pics

A wonderful book for botanists or any traveler heading to the Galapagos. It covers 436 flowering plants and provides photos of more than half. It also introduces the botanical history of the islands and their varied ecological zones. Its boasts clear text and some exceptional pictures.

The Gift of Death (Religion and Postmodernism)

From Publishers Weekly

French philosopher Derrida stares death in the face in this dense but rewarding inquiry. Beginning with an analysis of an essay on the sacred by Czech philosopher/human rights activist Jan Patocka, Derrida follows the development of moral and ethical responsibility, and the concept of the soul's immortality, in the transition from Platonism to Christianity. He then ponders the self's anticipation of death in sacrifice, war, orgiastic mystery cults, murder and execution, with reference to Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling, Nietzsche, Heidegger's thought (a "constant attempt to separate itself from Christianity") and the biblical story of Abraham's contemplated sacrifice of his son, Isaac, at God's behest. In the most provocative section, Derrida links religious injunctions of sacrifice to the "monotonous complacency" of modern society, which allows tens of millions of children to die of hunger and disease. From Library Journal

This is Part 2 of Derrida's exploration of the ambiguity of giving. Part 1 (Given Time: Counterfeit Money, Univ. of Chicago Pr., 1992) weaves in and out of a Baudelaire prose poem on giving a beggar a counterfeit coin. Part 2 is more direct and reality-grounded, probably because its point of departure is an essay on history, religion, and responsibility by Jan Patov cka, Czech philosopher who died of a brain hemorrhage after police interrogation in March 1977. When confronted with the death of a scholar who gave his life because of his commitment to human rights, Derrida's readers will find the paradox of giving one's life-through death-somewhat precious. Derrida moves through texts from Emmanuel Levinas, Kierkegaard, the New Testament, and Nietzsche before ending with a passage from Baudelaire's art criticism, where he finds some of the same possibilities for double-reading a gift. Willis's model translation renders the text in clear English, with sufficient parenthetical French interpellations for readers to see where Derrida is playing on the gaps between the two languages. I've been an eager reader of Derrida since encountering Plato's Pharmacy in grad school. This second edition of Donner la Mort includes the essay Literature in Secret. Derrida is a notoriously difficult read, but rewarding; it may help to realize that he does not lay out a theory of philosophy, but rather performs philosophy. I found his exploration of the Abraham and Isaac story especially notable. In reading him, I always think of the carpenter's maxim: "measure twice, cut once."

Derrida's analysis of 'secret' is excellent, and a wonderful set up for his premise about the significance of death.Others have mentioned that a foundation of Heidegger would be helpful when reading this book, and I would agree. In this sense, I feel like Derrida here clarifies Heidegger's position about how Being Towards Death produces authenticity, but this could be because I read both for fun and didn't have any courses to guide me through.I really liked his analysis on the nature of subjectivity at the end. I'm not one to try to summarize an author's arguments in a review - I think the person can read the book him/herself and discover what is said, but I'm a fan of Derrida, and I believe this is his best work. I read Grammatology (yes, the whole thing, not the excerpts from Between the Blinds and in college courses), and really enjoyed it, and this may have influenced how well I enjoyed this work.

DON'T MISS THE HERMENEUTICAL GUIDE-STATEMENT ON PAGE "9". Derrida is best known as the "father of deconstructionism" for post-modern thought. But approaching this book from that narrow perspective would rob the reader of a great deal of significance in this work. This book truly is about "THE GIFT"; and that point should be honored. But the best key for understanding this manuscript is given to us by Derrida himself on page "9": "Even if that is not the case, nothing prevents us from putting a psychoanalytic reading of these words (Patocka's) to the test, at least on an experimental basis. This is Derrida's "philosophy of psychology", through the interpretive lens of Patocka. He willingly takes up this approach as an experiment because post-modern thinking has almost exclusively taken the subjective/psychological framework as their best model for articulation; usually consisting of an extreme leftist Hegelian framework. Derrida is a difficult thinker to absorb; but not impossible. He just has a style of compressing a great deal of significance in just a few pages. In this instance, I would suggest slowing-down your normal reading pace for scholarly work, in order to stay tuned to the author's evolving thought. This is "post-grad" material so don't expect less. This is one of the most strongly-balanced presentations I've seen in post-modern work; and from a date of 1995, which is a little ahead of the curve when its popularity began to rise. Derrida approaches from the depths of the "dark", the unconscious. Better wear your miner's hat with spotlight. The conversion experience takes place in the unconscious, not consciousness. This is a Christian presentation; but of the post-modern type. In fact the view actually proposes a reciprocal model consisting of: 1. orgiastic-aesthetics; 2. Platonic-rationalism; and 3. Christian-reversal. All three remain present to each other thoughout the workings of the hermeneutical circle, where the stage of "myth-morphic incorporation" continues to re-constitute the pre-linguistic self-consciousness. This myth-morphic stage is where the unconscious takes the "mystery" of conversion experiences and converts them into "secret", one that is internally posted as an objective representation (just not linguistic yet). Articulation of our responsible intentions of differentiation for the "GOOD" take place in consciousness. And ths is an articulation "before": 1. The "other"; 2. The "law"; and 3. The "self". Most of the specificity is before the "law" and consists of our deconstructions of the inauthenticity of technological society; and reconstruction using the three reciprocal "secrets" and their alliance with "responsibility". This great internal work by the self; who speaks from an internal dialogue between the unconsciousness and consciousness, posits the intention as "gift". This means a self-sacrifice that actually goes to the extreme of relinquishing all "possession" of the intention so that it can truly be self-actualized as an "incarnation" in the world. Take your time with this book and the reward will be overwhelming. I'm extremely impressed with Derrida n 1995. Easily a very appreciative "5" stars for boldly presenting such profound content.

You can give someone life--or you can put someone to death. But you cannot "give" someone their own death. Death is a "gift" because it insures our irreplaceableness in God's eyes; it is ours and ours alone. No one can die in my place no more than I can die in theirs. Our willingness to acknowledge this relationship with our own deaths (which above all requires "responsibility," a term Derrida seems to prefer to "faith") in turn unites us with God and the self, with the giver and the receiver.I'll admit I hadn't expected a deconstructionist to use terms like "absolute," "transcendant," "God," "self"--in profusion and in earnest. But perhaps Derrida has sufficiently exposed the instability, metaphoric basis and deceptive play of language to be able to employ it without qualifiers, disclaimers, and tedious textual self-referentiality. As is his custom, he represents his own work as a critique of others' works--Plato's "Phaedo," Nietzsche's "Genealogy of Morals," Kierkegaard's "Fear and Trembling," and the contemporary, politically executed Polish philosopher Jan Potocka. While he establishes his distance from Plato and Nietzsche, his re-visioning of Kierkegaard offers new angles without questioning or challenging the great Dane's existential reading of the Abraham-Isaac story. And his alignment with Potocka is so complete as to suggest more an apologia than a critique of the latter's work. Add to these texts numerous references to Heidegger and to both the Old and New Testaments as well as to stories by Poe and Hawthorne, and you'll have some idea of how richly allusive, not to mention dense, Derrida's discourse can be, even in a brief work such as this. The primary requisite for reading "The Gift of Death" is some knowledge of its precursor, "Fear and Trembling." Like Kierkegaard, Derrida defines religion as access to the responsibility of a free self, which in turn is defined as a relationship consciously and secretly experienced by the individual subject who sees him or herself in the gaze of God. Truth is separated from Socrates' truth by its interiority, by its replacement of reason, ethics, and aesthetics with the sheer horror of the abyss. Compared to Kierkegaard, however, Derrida's account is less romantic, less inspiring, more disturbing. The leap of faith involves not a sacrifice of Isaac but of oneself, a secret and senseless meeting with one's own death. Derrida interprets the absence of woman in the Abraham and Bartleby stories as proof that the "knight of faith's" quest is not the "tragic hero's". Instead, it is beyond all knowledge, a confrontation with the abyss that marks the Absolute singularity of the self. (This latter observation is reminiscent of Marlowe's inability, or unwillingness, in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," to share the "truth" of Kurtz' final words, "The horror, the horror," with Kurtz' fiance.)In the latter part of his critique, Derrida offers a paradoxical criticism of the technological, modern age. Far from becoming quantified or de-naturalized, we have returned to the demonic and orgiastic from which religion arose. Modern man has fallen into inauthenticity, becoming not a self or person but assuming the mask of a "role." Present-day democracy, in turn, is not about the equality of individuals but of roles. Hence the importance of discovering and accepting the gift of death that determines human uniqueness. Responsibility is the criterion; freedom is the result. This is a work not to be read quickly or only once. Derrida moves slowly, taking two steps backward before moving one step forward, but his method insures the communication of his meanings. If it's any inducement to the reader, I would suggest that the fourth and final chapter, "Tout autre est tout autre," is anticlimactic and unhelpful. By then the attentive reader will already have located the gift.

Derrida impresses again with a magnificent display of his analysis on language, the concept of writing, and the deconstruction in the field of phenomenology.

Great!
