About the Author

STEPHEN CHARNOCK was born in London in 1628, studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was converted, and preached for a time in Southwark. He undertook further study at Oxford, becoming a Fellow of New College, and later Senior Proctor. He served in Ireland as chaplain to the Governor, Henry Cromwell, and became a popular preacher. On the Restoration of the monarchy (1660) he returned to London, studying and ministering privately till 1675, when he began a shared Presbyterian pastorate with Thomas Watson at Crosby Hall, Bishopsgate. He died aged 52 in July 1680.

His style is formal and of the time and period of the early to mid-17th century.In evaluating Charnock's style it is easy to see how clear, concise, and very forceful. When I say forceful however, I mean backed by the power of the Holy Spirit and by their belonging to God. The table of contents gives almost know clues as to how the volumes are organized other than the tiles of the sermons. This is not a regular book where main ideas and sub-points are developed. There is no determining or detecting topical or chronological points.These volumes affected me very deeply. I used Mortimer J. Adler's second level of reading, called Inspectional Reading, from his book How to Read a Book. I used his format of systematic skimming or pre-reading to familiarize myself with these five (5) volumes. These sermons are very deep and need read many times to get the full benefit. They certainly improved my spiritual life by reading them. This collection of Charnock's volumes enhanced my own personal spiritual understanding and course. I would recommend this set without a single reservation to any Christian of any level who will honestly take the time to prayerfully and meditatively read this discourses.It is impossible to discover a theme and thesis for this collection. Again, it is unlike other books written with specific themes or thesis, it is a collection of sermons or discourses on varying topics and scriptures. The reader must discover the theme and thesis of each sermon or discourse as one reads them.This collection is of utmost interest. Charnock accurate exegetes the Scriptures for the benefit of his readers. The importance of this work cannot be overstated in this lifetime. The spiritual value contained in this collection is second only to the Bible itself.Very little is known about Stephen Charnock, much to his own design and desire. A smidgen of information about Charnock was gleaned from the sermon preached at his death and from a brief pre-fix entitled "To the Reader" by the publishers Adam and Veal. He even disappeared from the grid for about fifteen (15) years. As a godly man and theologically educated he is immensely qualified to preach as he did.Charnock was born in London in 1628 and studied for the ministry at Emmanuel College in Cambridge. The content is essential to the spiritual well development of God's people.Volume One - contains an introduction to Charnock's life, the first eight (8) sermons on The Existence and Attributes of God.Volume Two - contains the conclusion to the sermons on The Existence and Attributes of God.Volume Three - contains his sermons on regeneration. This is a must read! This tells how spiritually dead sinners are made alive with new life in Christ.Volume Four - contains fifteen (15) more sermons pertinent to the Christian life. The first six (6) sermons are from the Gospel of John and relate to enjoying happiness in the saving knowledge of God through Jesus Christ.Volume Five - contains nineteen (19) sermons from the New Testament and five (5) sermons from the Old Testament on various topics pertinent to believers.

This would more appropriately be titled "Discourses on Regeneration", as this is a list of the works:The Necessity of Regeneration. John 3:3,5.A Discourse of the Nature of Regeneration. 2 Corinthians 5:17.A Discourse of the Efficient of Regeneration. John 1:13.A Discourse of the Word, the Instrument of Regeneration. James 1:18.A Discourse of God’s being the Author of Reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19.A Discourse of the Cleansing Virtue of Christ’s Blood. 1 John 1:7.Also the print is about 8 pt, and there are no page numbers or chapter headings at the top of the pages as you read. No table of contents either.But it's Charnock, so that's great.

I am reviewing only the quality of the books themselves, because when I was looking for this set (electronic or hard copy), I discovered that it is not easy to get a set that was free of errors.I spoke with someone at Banner of Truth Publishing to inquire about their edition and I was told that it was free of the errors that other sets have. That person explained the process used to obtain these books from the 19th century copy; and how Banner of Truth produced the error free version.I purchased my set from them directly and am pleased to say that it is a quality set of books.I have listened to several discourses from vol. 5 at sermonaudio.com and have been anticipating reading them. Stephen Charnock's writing about the mortification of sin is very insightful. In an effort to understand my own sin more thoroughly, I have read John Owen's work on mortification also. Charnock's work,however, has given me a fuller understanding and I'm just beginning to digest it. I praise God for both of these servants of His.

Someone close to me is decidedly declining into the darkness of Alzheimer's and dementia. What I learned from Michael Morgan's book is already making me feel better about her future. Plus, it can help not only her, but our whole family. I'm optimistic that the information I read will help to reverse the symptoms she's exhibiting, and prevent them from happening to any of us. What's better than that? I think this simple therapy for Alzheimer's Disease will make the face of the disease far less frightening. Reading this book has certainly given us hope!

Don't let the catchy title mislead you, this book is not just another come-on. It is a well written, intelligent, and readable commentary about Alzheimer's disease, what is being done about it, and what can be done about it. The book will give you an understanding of the science behind Alzheimer's and the growing consensus about inflammation as a cause of many diseases, which the author believes include Alzheimer's. The book also sums up the traditional approaches taken to treat and care for Alzheimer's patients, which often don't seem to include any expectation of meaningful results. It then offers a ten point "prescription" the author has used to successfully treat and prevent Alzheimer's. This prescription includes craniosacral therapy, an offshoot of cranial osteopathy pioneered by the late Dr. John Upledger of Michigan State University, as well as factors such as diet and exercise. I found the book fascinating and informative and give it five stars.

I’m so proud of Michael as he continues to spread his belief & passion that it’s possible in 10 minutes a day to change the current trend of Alzheimer’s & Dementia in our communities, country and worldwide. Alzheimer's is a devastating illness and I have seen the transformation Michael has made in person. Once I saw him practice live and feel his techniques with my own body, I got the book immediately and began to practice the techniques on my grandmother! I'm hooked. She seems happier and calmer and Ii am surely going to be trained by Michael in the future. I plan to keep practicing these for my own aging parents. (And for me! It's never to early for prevention!)

Had to have this book for one of my classes. The information contained in it is good. I did not like that some of the information I needed for my classes was glossed over and I did not get the best quality needed for my tests. Otherwise, a good book.

I knew nothing about what this book would cover but it was very informational. Amazon Rental came in brand new condition. The appendix was the most helpful for examples.

Before this work was published, we used Operation World as a family, but I found it challenging in two respects. First, it was difficult to summarize the overwhelming content on each country into the 5 minutes that I had my kids' attention. Second, praying through countries alphabetically in Operation World made us jump from continent to continent and was confusing to my kids. So we ended up praying through regions of the world, but I had to print out my own maps and flip around through the book to find each country. "Pray for the World" has fixed both of these problems with the abridged content and much easier organization of countries within their respective region. I'm thoroughly enjoying using this prayer guide each night to help my kids pray for God's work among the nations.I heartily agree with theses following words that come from the preface of Operation World, reminding me of the privilege of being apart of God's global work through prayer: "Each and every prayer is a tiny piece of a great cosmic puzzle, which when fitted together will allow for the completion of the grand picture of the Almighty Lord's plan for humanity and the universe. We don't merely pray ABOUT the many points featured herein, we pray TOWARD something, and that something is magnificent - the fulfillment of the Father's purposes and His Kingdom come."

I LOVE this book! I appreciate the way it is organized, first by continent, then alphabetically by country within the continent. It gives general information on each continent, and then specific information on each country. There are maps of each of the continents, and maps of each of the countries. There is a guide in the back of the book to help people pray for the whole world in a year. The information that is given on each country helped me feel a more personal connection to each people group. I use this book for personal prayers, to set up the prayer list for my church, and I've given it to several friends. I highly recommend it if you are serious about systematically praying for the world.

Pray for the World is helpful to me. I am thankful for Molly Wall, who helped edit it, and Patrick Johnstone. I am indebted to those who helped in the production of Operation World, which the book is taken from. I am praying a new Operation World will be published in 2017. This book has less information than Operation World and will be used more I believe.I am using this book almost daily to pray for other countries. In Luke chapter 18 in the Bible, we are told by Christ prayer makes a difference. The bread at midnight story and the older lady and the judge help us see that God will respond as you pray. Try it.

The book needs to be updated to cover the situations in the 21st century. Much research has gone into the writing of this book, but the changing scenerio of world geopolitics today has greatly affected the spiritual growth and decline of some nations and this isnt reflected in the book. However, nothwithstanding this lack, intercessors can still benefit from the details given in the book.

This smaller version of the Operation World book is a great tool for me for prayer. It is much easier to carry around. The prayer calendar is in the back of the book. The book is organized by continent / region and then the countries are listed alphabetically within those regions. I'm not getting rid of my Operation World book but when I travel, Pray for the World will go with me.

I pray for a different country every day. This is a brilliant compilation. They include lots of ordinary statistics but also special prayer points. A "one-of-a-kind" guide which I think every Christian should be using. We need to have a world view especially since the world is SHRINKING!

Operation World is indispensable -- but now, it's also portable! The nations are laid out with just key details chosen for each one. Prayer now has content to fuel it! The only thing I don't like is that the calendar date is not printed on each page -- you have to put a bookmarker in on the page that lists the country of the day. I'd love to see the dates back on the main pages, since the idea of praying in unison with Christians all over the world, for the same country on the same day, is one of the primary selling points for using Operation World.

This is an excellent abridged version of Operation World. With this prayer hand book you could meaningfully pray for all the nations of the world in a daily basis. The kindle edition is excellent and the formatting is nice. You can navigate to any country through the Index of Countries in the contents page. Buy it. Pray through it. Be a God's channel of blessing to the world.

I can hardly say enough wonderful things about this book, but I'll start with the writing, which is fresh, inventive, and surprising at times. Then there's the subject matter, which is a bundle of touching and humorous vignettes that explore the life of Mozart through his own pet starling, Star. And yes, Mozart did have a pet tame starling that flew around in his home, adding to what was a joyful blend of chaos, commotion, and some of the most brilliant composing ever to grace our planet. Parallels and observations are made to and with the author's own beloved tame starling, Carmen. This book is written for sensitive readers who possess an appreciation for art and nature. A careful reading will provide you with a greater understanding of the expanse of starry space that connects nature and art. I will read the book again, to be sure, and I will also write a letter of appreciation to the gifted author, Lyanda Lynn Haupt.

Delightful book about human/natural world interactions, something Lyanda Haupt does so well. I loved her books Crow Planet and Urban Bestiary, so I was thrilled when I heard about this book. It was a great read, mixing stories of her experience raising a starling with historical material about Mozart's starling (yes, he had one, too), scientific information about birds, and reflections on the nature of pets and our interactions with wild things. I would love to meet Carmen, Haupt's starling! Luckily, Haupt has posted videos of Carmen on Facebook.

A good attempt at fabricating the "perhaps this happened" scenario of interaction between Mozart and a pet starling. There's very little documented interaction between the two, so the book is required to follow the path of conjecture. It was a good attempt, but there just wasn't enough to sustain the rather tenuous storyline. I got fed up with the book, and actually threw it out before finishing it. I didn't want to be embarrassed by having such a bad book in my house.

Loved this book. Reads like a detective story and it's packed with facts about birds. music, research about language acquisition and how other species communicate. Might sound offbeat and it's riveting! I read it while relaxing at a beautiful spot in the woods by a lake it was the perfect setting to be transported to Mozart's world. The story and the mystery are all tied up neatly at the close. Only thing that was missing for me was a recording of the music discussed. I was in a location with limited internet service and couldn't call it up! a book to share with Mozart fans!

Author Luanda L Haupt takes the reader on a journey in time, a glimpse into the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his pet starling. As she too raised a starling her insight was factual and entertaining. I enjoy this book for the musical history and one of nature's always intriguing little brown birds.

Mozart's Starling is a delightful look into the fascinating world of a bird I always thought was a nuisance only to find out they are mimickers capable of song and an extensive vocabulary. In researching the mystery surrounding the story of Mozart's starling the author raises her own starling to learn of its innate abilities. My book club read this and we universally found it engaging and thought provoking.

Very interesting story of the starling owned by Mozart as well as the author's own experience with a pet starling. Very wellwritten a fun to read.

Carmen, the author's starling, comes vividly to life, as does a sense of the author's curiosity and appreciation of all things living. Humor mixes with deep questions in a miraculous broth that rewards the reader with its intellectual and humane nourishment. I approached the book's ending with sorrow, knowing that my part, as reader, in the author's continuing investigations into things in the world that matter much to me was coming to an end.

I brought for my daughter to prepare her for the test. We dont have the scores yet but she did say it helped her understand the way the test would be worded. Shes never taken the test until now. I would say its for beginners

I own every single SAT / PSAT book from Amazon, and this book is by far the worst among all. The math portion of this book is way off of PSAT/NMQST exam.

I bought this book for my son to prepare the PSAT, In english part, There is a directions to help him to do this practices when you reading the Article, The detailed answer to let him to know the answer, beside of it, In the Math part, there is many Algebra 1 and 2 questions, I observed that there is lack of Geometry questions. it mean that Algebra is more important for the PSAT test.

Lots of useful information

This is a good practice book for the PSAT exam - it has more tests (3 drills + 1 test) than most other PSAT prep books - with a few major exceptions. The reading and writing sections (Sec. 1 and 2) passages are well tailored to the actual exam and provide practice over different writing styles and topics. Having tutored middle and high school math for about 5 years, I think the math sections (Sec. 3 and 4) are a bit more difficult and sometimes off-topic than what you would expect on the actual PSAT. That's not too bad, but the major downside of the math parts are that quite a few of the problems have wrong answers, either the answer choice given in the solutions are wrong, or, the correct answer is not one of the choices. The explanations of some of the math problems given in the solutions are also not clear and difficult to understand. The book does provide a Website where errors can be reported. Overall, a good practice book, but be prepared for its caveats.
