Really great read!Two things other reviewers beat around the bush about but don't state exactly.The main one is that by the end of the Civil War Jesse was only 16 and had never really been away from home. By today's standards, his family would be the equivalent of the upper-middle-class, living and working in the rural areas of America. That he was from the southern culture is the key. The fact that his family owned 6 or 7 slaves, tragic, but it really had only a minor or no impact on his thinking as aside from one man, the rest of the slaves were working inside the house on domestic work (probably about a 1,000 sq ft. common house of the era), not in the fields. As a 16-year-old it was not his view of economics, it was his environment - a bad, bad example, but what he knew of life.There was nothing documented about his using white-supremest language, though others were quoted with those type statements, occasionally. The thing that is being missed is that his family and friends were all doing financially okay, from his viewpoint. Then, as is well brought out, as the war ended and his culture was turned upside down as were the many, many families and friends lives. There were no plantations in Western Missouri. Just some families had some slaves, not thousands of slaves. And, it was a culture of people that had done okay with the southern culture who were now economically and politically, effectively imprisoned after the war. Many were governmentally mandated to leave their properties and disappear elsewhere in a couple of weeks or go to jail, and on and on. Their culture, wrong as it had been, was nearly half of the population of the US and were then treated as war criminals after the war, particularly in Western Missouri by Missouri's politics and law, different from the Federal handling of the ex-confederate states.Jesse, was vastly more impacted by the government overriding his Bill of Rights-rights than the loss of the Southern slave-owning economy. Most others in that Little Dixie culture of Western Missouri 'served' their 'sentences' in one way or another and became just regular citizens of the US, Western Missouri, again in 15 or 20 years, and went on with life. Even his older brother Frank worked for years in Kentucky during the late 1870s and through the 1880s as practically a lone white man amongst black workers harvesting trees, on the same labor level, and had no disagreements about it.But Jesse, between his intelligence and his very social, engaging, out-going and likable personality, became the voice of the angst against government overriding his and the other's Constitutional rights. Unfortunately, after he had effectively played a large part in correcting those wrongs and the 'chains' on the earlier secessionists were gone, Jessie didn't know how to live a 'normal' life.The other point is that after Jesse was gone, a deserved but wrongly rendered death, none of his friends and family or even most of his antagonists stood out in society more than just regular people in any-town, any-state in America. It just makes the statement that as wrong as he was, even though he did accomplish the political end he was after, he truly was an outstanding person to have effectively created, and he intentionally did, the persona that we still associate with the name Jesse James.There is a huge huge amount of documentation that T.J. Stiles cross-collated and filter truth from exaggeration, poor memory recountings, etc., at the end of the book, discrepancies being noted on those that were not included, etc.So, if you want the best understanding of who, what, when, where, and how of the life and times of Jesse James, including the social/economic/political/environmental aspects of his life, I highly recommend this book. I am sure you'll be greatly enlightened. It is a story and not a fact-fest.(BTW I have had many, great friends and work associates who were ultimately descended from the pre-Civil War era slaves, that I hold as great examples of how in America if you want something you can get it regardless of personal circumstances or handicaps. They are my fellow Americans regardless of ancestry.)

An excellent work! Mr. Stiles sets the scene in MIssouri in a thorough, clear and interesting way. By the time you get to Jesse, you know the history of the culture and the specific family that created him. You know his mentors in the vicious bushwhacker gangs and how he was shaped from a young age in what was, essentially, what we would call "death squads" today.A superb job of giving you and understanding of why Jesse, of all the ex-guerillas turned outlaw, became so famous. Why his support with MIssourians grew, reached and apogee, then declined.Interestingly written. I highly recommend this book.

Very possibly the best book I've read in years. I love to read history. I haven't read a lot recently about American history though, especially Civil War history. This book brought that era alive for me on so many levels, I can't adequately describe it. Until now, it's been impossible for me to imagine living at ground zero in a war, especially a civil war. The hell of it that I felt in this book brought it home. I couldn't put it down, literally and figuratively. Read this book. You won't forget the experience.

After looking for a biography and in-depth look into the life of Jesse Woodson James, look no further than this one. Stiles paints a fantastic portrait of 19th century America, locked in a turbulent struggle with itself. Out of this conflict comes an opportunist, Jesse W. James who uses the Civil War as a springboard to fame and cementing his legacy as one of the greatest and cerberal outlaws of all time.Gritty, thorough, and insightful, Stile's book is a fabulous look into the turbulent times of the 1860's,70's,80's from the perspective of the State of MO.

So much information presented that I had never before heard or considered. The implications of the Civil War and slavery in the makeup of Jesse James and his family; the divide in Missouri over the same issues - Civil War and slavery; the ruthlessness and blood-thirsty ways of this particular rebel is well written and presented.

"Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War" is the best work on James that I've seen to date. It includes details about his early life that I've never seen anywhere else. It also discusses the war years thoroughly. I liked the ties into the politics of the time and James's involvement in them. The narrative is very well written, and it flows so well that I was sorry to close it at the end. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I think this is the best book written on Jesse James.The research is well documented in the 69 pages of notes in the back. It relies heavily on contemporary news accounts and the Official Record of the Civil War, and delves deeply into the James myth and how he helped create it. T. J. Stiles is a good writer, and I recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in: Civil War Missouri, bushwhackers, the James brothers, or the outlaw period in Missouri. You will not be disappointed.

He explains how to reward your employees and how to get along with difficult people.Along the way he presents some old fashioned ideas that are still useful today. Like he says you should praise in public and criticize in private. This is the polite thing to do and is often not done in our very public world.This book will be helpful to business owners as well as it encourages treating employees well.~The Rebecca Review

After having read Maxwell's other book…"Winning with people " and being well taught and inspired, I decided to read this book as well. I feel I am a better person for having done so. It is definitely worth the time, and I have recommended it to several of my coworkers.

I liked the concept of allowing yourself to be open in order to deal effectively with others. In order to become a great leader you need to open yourself to the possibilities or learn from others how to be better yourself

Good, but very much like other leadership books I’ve read. Most of the context in this book exist in most leadership books.

John Maxwell is one of the leading authorities on how to be an effective leader. This book contains a wealth of great examples and anecdotes to help illustrate his principles, but I found most of the principles to be based on common sense (but nevertheless very good reminders).* Treat others as you would want to be treated: encourage them, appreciate them, forgive them, listen to them, understand them.* In life you're either going to see people as your adversaries or your assets and that is how you will relate to them.* Be more concerned about making others feel good about themselves than you are making them feel good about you...don't try to sell other people on your, try to sell them on themselves.* The charismatic person will risk getting out of his comfort zone in order to make others feel comfortable.* Roadblocks to charisma are: pride, insecurity, moodiness, perfectionism, oversensitivity, negativism.* Those who are powerful in leadership understand that one of the key tasks of management is to find ways to grow people.* We motivate best from the other person's perspective.* Leadership is not a position that one is given. Seeing that this has never been my strong point, I believe it has given me meaning insights and tools to better lead my team at work. Also to become a better team player with my family. John Maxwell brings home the essence of leadership.

Maxwell's writing style (actually from what I understand he has a "ghostwriter" who translates John's ideas to written form) is easy to read and makes a lot of sense. It's a common sense, practical approach to relationships. But as the saying goes, common sense isn't so common and that's why this book is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their ability to interact with people. It brings clarity to those sometimes nebulous "yes I know but can't quite describe it" principles of being a person other people want to be around. It explores what do other people have that makes us want to be around them and then looks at what makes other people want to be around us. And it's not based on slick techniques but on being genuine, caring, giving, and attitude. The stories, anecdotes, and quotes help make the material memorable. I also highly recommend John's "Everyone Communicates, Few Connect" book.

About the Author

Mark Grayson is a Distinguished Consulting Engineer at Cisco with responsibility for leading its mobile architecture strategy. He has more than 15 years of experience in the wireless industry. He holds a first-class honors degree in electronics and communications engineering from the University of Birmingham (England) together with a Ph.D in radio communications and has been granted more than 50 patents in the area of mobile communications.   Kevin Shatzkamer is a Customer Solutions Architect at Cisco with responsibility for long-term strategy and architectural evolution of mobile wireless networks. He has worked at Cisco and in the mobile wireless industry for nine years, focusing on various technologies ranging from GSM/UMTS to CDMA networks, packet gateway, networkbased services and security, video distribution, Quality of Service, and end-to-end design theory. Kevin has 16 pending patents related to all areas of work. Kevin holds a bachelor’s in engineering from the University of Florida and a master’s of business administration from Indiana University.   Scott Wainner is a Distinguished Systems Engineer at Cisco, providing design and consulting support for the major U.S. service providers and enterprises. He joined Cisco in 1999 and has led the architectural development of next-generation IP/MPLS services while applying his innovative efforts toward the development VPN technologies and virtualized services. Cisco Press has published many technical books about their products and about networking in general. But this book is a little atypical in that it seems to have far more detailed content. Also and perhaps pleasantly to some readers, the level of detail is not about an exhaustive explanation of the features of some Cisco product. You could construe this book as a timely discourse on numerous industry efforts at the intersection and integration of mobile networking (which is effectively equivalent to the use of cellphones) and the Internet.One topic bruited about is the use of femtocells to improve cellular reach; especially inside buildings. Three methods are given - WiMax, UTMS and cdma2000. A chapter gives a detailed scrutiny of the latter.For the Internet, there is much about IPv6. It seems far easier to handle cellphones and the movement of these via IPv6 than shoehorning the problem into IPv4. The reader might be struck by the idea that this, finally, could be what drives a large scale deployment of IPv6.We also see that within IPv6, advances have been made. There are details of an improved next generation IPv6. Chapter 4 seems to be a key section of the book. Titled "An IP Refresher", it does not just cover the usual beginner's stuff about v4 and v6, but delves into cutting edge material.Later portions of the book also explain how the 3G and 4G cellphone levels might evolve and tie into the Internet. The text is a useful complement to these recent offerings on 4g - IP for 4G by Wisely, and 4G Roadmap and Emerging Communication Technologies (Universal Personal Communications) by Kim.

The book's goal is to provide information on the current and near future state of mobile networks and its evolution to all IP based mobile network. It discusses the key technology trends and concepts for mobile network but it does not provide any recommendation on which technology is the best.The book assumes that the readers have at least intermediate or advanced level of knowledge on Internet Protocol (IP) and other network technologies such as IP addressing, dynamic routing, multicast, BGP, MPLS, 802.11 wireless networking and basic understanding of Radio Access Networks (RAN). It is mainly written for network engineers looking to design, implement or understand the technology concepts and trends for mobile network.The book starts with chapter introducing various basic radio technologies such as propagation, modulation, radio degradation mitigation and different access technologies such as TDMA (time division), FDMA (frequency division), CDMA (code division) and the new SDMA (space division). The last one is an emerging technology using the publicly familiar Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) techniques, to increase throughput and coverage.Then the book jumps into detail discussing the concepts, architecture and performance aspects of various cellular access systems from the legacy Global System for Mobile (GSM), Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) to the current 3G technologies such as High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and Evolution Data Only (EVDO).The following chapter discusses the future evolution of mobile network to adopt all IP access systems that include Microwave Access (WiMAX) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) which is marketed as 4G system technologies that can support 100 Mbps throughput for mobile users. .I skipped most of the parts of the chapter that describes basic IP routing protocols and concepts. However, the last part of the chapter is interesting as it describes how the mobile network uses tunneling with encryption to deliver data to mobile user end system without exposing their network core to the internet. This is quite a challenge since mobile IP hosts frequently moves from one routing domain to another.The last few chapters discuss IP connectivity and evolution to IP based core mobile network and Intelligent Network (IN) which can enforce traffic policies (think QoS) based on subscriber, device or application and the evolution of the framework to IP Multimedia Subsytem (IMS) which allow end to end context awareness to launch services such as VoIP, video delivery and others..The authors have done a good job covering these various mobile technologies and discussing them in details. It however does not include URL links to web sites so readers can get more detail information. That should not matter since a simple Google search will do the job. The delivery is also rather dry but I believe that is expected for a technical subject like this.I rate this book 4 out of 5 and recommend the book for people who want to learn more about the design for the Radio Access Networks (RAN).

In researching this definitive biography over a seven-year period, Crowe interviewed and corresponded with many of Schindler's Jews; discovered a vast collection of his private papers and letters; found the Czech secret police and Gestapo files on Schindler documenting his involvement as an operative in Nazi Germany's military counterespionage organization, Abwehr, before and during World War II; and studied the war crimes file on Amon Goeth, the commandant of the Plaszow concentration camp. Crowe posits that Schindler had nothing to do with the creation of his famous transport lists (one for 700 men and one for 300 women) and then devotes a long chapter on its true origin. Crowe sees that Schindler's transformation from a greedy factory owner into one of the most remarkable righteous gentiles in the Holocaust took place slowly. Amazing, fascinating, horrifying and sad is the story of Oscar Schindler, Emilie and others, as written in David M Crowe's well researched and easily readable biography. Oscar evolved into a deeply good good man, with great skill, courage and sharp wit, who flaws were also in many ways his strong points it seems to me in achieving what he did, and was an immensely admirable person. And it is sad that brilliant nice people don't 'appear' to get what they deserve, as loss of health and tragic failures after the war seemed in many ways just as challenging in Oscar's life story. There are a lot of horrible events and people described in this book, but also acts of humanity, kindness and braveness by many in the Oscar Schindler story, those three traits in particular summing up Oscar. There are more than a few instances of the Nazi hypocracies and madness, being used against them as they are outwitted in this story. An amazing and moving story. It's true that there's a lot of detail in this book and it can be hard going to keep up with it all, but i found the subject matter of Schindler enough to more than motivate me to keep turning the pages. One of the best sections of the book was Oscar's meeting in budapest i think it was, with aid organisation representatives for jews in occupied europe. Here you get a chance to discover what Oscar's thoughts were in relation to the war, holocaust and where he was at in action amongst it all. There is a lot of other detail in the book, not so involving, but the holocaust was a huge bureaucratic operation and apart from that, there weren't too many people with the liberty to document or concentrate on individual coming and goings, in the new cut throat order of the glorious third reich. So a lot of the superfluous information not directly relating to Oscars' daily life, is both understandably from a research point of view and also is relevant because this is precisely the world that Oscar was operating in. I think the author has done a great job on bringing us a biography on a man whos life and good deeds, never really got the reward they deserved(which is why life is as it is!) and because Oscar remained relatively obscure, much of his life details just wern't important enough for anyone to record for prosperities sake. Mr Crowe is more critical of Oscar than i feel he should be, for example, he disaproves when Oscar tell's the afore mentioned agents in Budapest that they must admit, in the intellectual realm the jew is really a dangerous competitor for the nazis. Is that such a bad and unaccurate thing to say, in light of the situation? I feel Schindler's own intelligence and strength of character is not given enough credit in the book; due to the fact that he was out to exploit the situation for personal monetary gain intially(i.e. he was a opportunistic business man cashing in on the war and occupation), and because he lost his health and failed after the war finished, it is easy to put his success down to war time craziness and the skill of the men running his factories. He was not a moral man in the conventional sense, he liked women, drinking and living in the moment but i think it was his free-spiritedness, that when given the power, compelled him to use it in a humanitarian way rather than worry about his own security, which is the accepted way to do things. Ultimately Oscar Schindler lived from his heart, he understood this, u get this from the book, and why the book is a great effort in bringing us his life story, to me the author's judgement on Oscar is not as good as it should be, due in part i suppose to the clinical unromantic objectivity that is expected of a researcher.

They now demand the total surrender of mankind, to fear and worship. And there ends the prologue, a long and rambling regurgitation of facts to paint the picture of the desperate world in which this story is set.Yes, the theme 'Gods and Slaves' could be construed as somewhat epic in nature and worthy of receiving a different treatment than is the normal for this author, but gone is the classic Bella in the struggle to master the style of his new narrative. The signature first person perspective is replaced by third and immediately the bond between protagonist and reader that is a feature of his other serials is lost. We are not along for the ride, knowing and feeling every lesson that is learned, ever desire that is had, in a manner that is as intimate as we have come to relish and expect. Don’t get me wrong, I like third person and know that done correctly a reader can feel as close as if we experienced every nuance of feeling, every thought, fear, anxiety and triumph as if it was our own, but not in this instance.Much of the narrative, at least in the first half of the book is repetitive, disjointed and even a little boring. The information in the prologue almost overwhelming and unnecessary. I missed the mystery of the revelation, the pinpoint focus at the start that slowly blossoms into full knowledge the more the story progresses. I know from having read previous series by this author that this is something he knows how to do but for some reason fails to do it in this case.Am I still then tempted to read more? Do I want to know if Mateo will gain the freedom he desperately desires? Has the story instilled in me empathy sufficient to see him overcome his adversaries? Maybe. But Mateo is an anomaly, a character that has proven himself shallow. He has experienced a loving background from which he has been irrevocably torn, and rightly, harbours loathing for the master that treats him as a desirable but ultimately dispensable asset on the journey to his own betterment and his standing in the eyes of his avarice and fickle gods. Mateo has an understandable determination to win free, and intelligence enough to realise he can use the desire of others for his own purposes, BUT then he finds himself stirred by a being that is his ultimate rapist and the reason for his despicable situation in the first place. He doesn’t know why he is drawn to the god Eloy, why the god arouses desire in him… and ultimately neither do I.

I've always been a fan of NB's work. All his books are different and pulls you in. But this, THIS was just absolutely BRILLIANT. From the first sentence to the last, I was captivated by the story he weaved. The way he writes, pulling you into the story, cheering Mateo on, wanting him to succeed. The world he created was just...WOW! This is by far his best work and I'm looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend this book. It won't dissapoint and it is so worth it.

Well...if Master Bella has not gone and done it again! This was so bloodydamn great. My heavens...and so worth the wait! It has been at least 6 months since we began to be teased with promises of gladiators, hard core sex, graphic violence and language and this one delivers...and delivers brilliantly.I cannot wait to see where this goes from here.The world building here is just so well done and the characters being formed rival what I loved so much about The New Haven Series. Mateo is such a strong and incredibly rich character and of course seeing how his relationship with Eloy grows or changes as the story progresses will be just awesome to see. Plus there is Titus, who I love already."In the earlier days since arriving at the ludus, Mateo had been meek, afraid and uncertain of what would be his fate. He now had some understanding, and he also began to see that if he were to survive, he had to cast away whatever timid feelings he had. He was in a world of warriors and barbarians. They were used to taking what they wanted, giving no apologies, and killing for sport and glory. If he was going to rise in status, he had to become someone new, someone without fear and doubt. He had to become a gladiator."Indeed he does.I cannot recommend this one enough! Bravo Master Bella on another winner!!

Can we just take a moment to fully appreciate the cover? I mean... this would involve a little more than silent appreciation! Lol and how very fitting it is to the story!We have a book detailing a world where gods have taken human form and have inhabited the earth. The intention was to cleanse it all and make it a “better”place... but that’s subjective... not everyone wanted to worship the earthly gods of wind, earth, fire and water... so they departed to the far off lands, the badlands so to speak. From the badlands humans were hunted and taken as slaved because they believed the people of the badlands were unworthy therefore any and everything could be done to them.... and so the story begins!A cruel tale with battles and survival! How quickly and not so quickly we end up doing things just to live!Beautiful! I cannot wait for book two! The smut is real by the way lol for real! Lol5 unique stars!
