About the Author

KATE DICAMILLO is the author of THE TALE of DESPEREAUX which received the Newbery Medal; BECAUSE of WINN-DIXIE, which received a Newbery Honor; THE TIGER RISING, which was named a National Book Award Finalist; and, most recently, the MERCY WATSON stories. She says, "One Christmas, I received an elegantly dressed toy rabbit as a gift. I brought him home, placed him on a chair in my living room, and promptly forgot about him. A few days later, I dreamed that the rabbit was face-down on the ocean floor - lost, and waiting to be found. In telling THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE, I was lost for a good long while, too. And then, finally, like Edward, I was found."BAGRAM IBATOULLINE is the illustrator of CROSSING by Philip Booth; THE NIGHTINGALE by Hans Christian Andersen, retold by Stephen Mitchell; THE ANIMAL HEDGE by Paul Fleischman; HANA in the TIME of the TULIPS by Deborah Noyes; and THE SERPENT CAME to GLOUCESTER by M. T. Anderson. He says, "It was a singular and most pleasurable experience to work on the illustrations for EDWARD TULANE and to be there with him on his journey. I must admit, I'm a bit wistful now that I've come to the end of this very special book."

We only bought this at the recommendation of my daugter's teacher. Originally, my 10-year old daughter wanted to take (what she thought would be) the easy way out and read Diary of a Wimpy Kid for her book report. She thought she was sly because most of those books are pictures anyway, so it wouldn't be much reading. Her teacher said she would allow that, but recommended that she try this book instead. As soon as this book was delivered, my daughter started reading. After a few pages, she commented how incredibly sad this book was, and I thought that was it. I didn't think she'd even give it a chance. Needless to say, she finished the book and LOVED IT! She was having a really hard time getting enough substance out of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book to write a book report about, but once she read the Tulane book, the report just flowed out of her. It was amazing. She loved the book, and I think she got something out of it. I feel like she learned about loyalty and appreciation for the people who care for you.

With tears in my eyes, I write this review, as I have just finished The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. This book was suggested to me by Amazon. We have 12 grandchildren and they are all avid readers. This book is a children's book, a lesson in life and loving, tells of heart break and loss, of being selfish and then knowing what real love means. And it also shows us to appreciate all that happens in our life and the people that we meet and our experiences, as they help us to grow and be what we should be.

When your 8 1/2 year old granddaughter runs to you and says, "This is the best book you'll ever read, Grandmom. Now here, read it" -- well you know that's what you must do. I was expecting a silly rabbit story, big font, short words. I was so, so wrong. I began that evening and could hardly put it down at bedtime! The writing is excellent and the characters are engaging. There were some words that I was sure Audrey would not have understood. And the depth of the characters is beyond a 2nd grader's understanding. A teacher read this to her enriched language arts class and thus was able to explain some of the deeper meanings. As I neared the ending of the book, I kept a tissue close by as I feared for yet another disaster. For my granddaughter and for me it will be a reference point to which we can return again and again through the years and peel back even more layers of this marvelous gem of a book. Thank you, my precious Audrey for inviting me on the journey.Written by Sarah, Tom's wife

This book is as close to perfect as I've found. The story does what fiction does best- draws the reader in, busts their heart wide opens, and leaves them a little changed by the end. DiCamillo explores what we all long to feel and understand- love- and she does so in a way that a child can grasp perhaps better than the adult reading it to them. But adults can get this story too. The characters are striking, and the events haunting to anyone who has felt love and loss. Be careful reading this book if you have a heart- you may find it.

Another teacher recommended this book to me and as a Kate DiCamillo fan, I purchased two so that I could read it aloud to my class this year. My class LOVED this read aloud and talk about it constantly, even still, after it's been about a month since we finished it and have moved onto reading Tiger Rising (also recommend that book by Kate DiCamillo especially for studying symbolism). My kids were really bored with the first two chapters of this book and then they were HOOKED instantly. We used the book to study characters and it was perfect for that purpose. There are so many characters and Edward changes beautifully throughout the book.

I have read this book to all 3 of my kids over the years (multiple times to each of them). My oldest is 19 and in college and my youngest is 9. I've read it so much I think I could recite it with my eyes shut in places. The story is captivating and heartwarming. Even though things change and life takes you in directions you had not planned, and even when nothing seems to be in your control, it's reassuring to know you always find your way back home. Each time I read it, I pick up on more and more of the little details that foreshadow the story and tie it together. Love this author. Am buying this again for my niece's daughter now who is 8. This is the PERFECT bedtime story. LOVE IT!

I had to get this book for a college course on children's literature, and this is now one of my favorite books.I read it I one sitting, and i think any child with a love of reading aged 8and up could read it fairly easily. This book is such a gem. I wish i had gotten the hardback version, but i had no idea how much i would love it.This is a book i will read over and over. Its about love, loss, perseverance, being strong in the face of helplessness, and hope. But it's much more than that.It is beautifully written, and has a perfect ending.

Edward Tulane is a distinguished, but vain, china rabbit. Edward’s girl Abilene loves him and he loves her right back. When Edward’s perfect life takes a turn for the worse, he learns there is more to life than trinkets and fine clothes.I really love Kate DiCamillo. Her book ‘Because of Winn Dixie’ is one of my favorites. I only recently heard of ‘Edward Tulane’. As soon I found out it is a story about a vain stuffed rabbit, I had to read it.The people Edward meets along his journey all have hard luck stories. Along Edward’s travels and with every new person he meets, Edward learns a lot about himself and the world around him. He bonds with all the people he travels with and helps fill a void in each and every one of them. In this Edward learns humility. This book absolutely gave me all the feels. Nellie, Bull & Lucy, and especially Bryce and his sister’s stories all pulled at my heartstrings. This book isn’t just for kids. This book is for everyone. It is amazing, beautiful, warm, and heart wrenching. The amazing illustrations added to the warm fuzzy feeling I got from this book. You must not only read this book, you must get everyone you know to read it.

#126,382 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Use caution as this was published two years ago -- a detail I missed when ordering which ended up costing us significant money. First, airport cabs are NOT $45-$55 AUD. Try $70 - $75 once you include the mandatory tolls and service fees (a little more for CC charge too) and navigating around the light rail construction. For just 1-2 travelers, that would've made trains or buses a better and faster option. Helping define the Central Business District hotels (CBD) would also assist, especially when there's major construction surrounding Circular Quay. Third and bigger -- they talk about a daily and weekly transit pass in Sydney that doesn't exist anymore. That may impact where you choose to stay depending on your planned activities. It was replaced with Opal Cards that are easy to understand if you know to read up about them before traveling. Unfortunately, this information is not easily to obtain in person so copying here for anyone traveling since it's not in the book. If you ask vendors about Opal card workings, they tell you to ask transit folks. If you ask transit folks about weekly passes, they tell you there aren't any. It's because you should be asking about weekly maximum costs which are basically the same thing (figured that our a few days in). You buy an Opal Card (free to get but you start with $$ on it). The ferries for getting around if using the card are $12.02 RT (half for kids). Buses and trains are zoned and in the $2 range. But there's also a maximum charge for the day of $15.80 adults/$7.90 kids AND a maximum weekly charge of $63.20 adults/$31.60 kids. So if you're figuring out where to stay and getting around (ferries are easiest but buses and light rail work as well), figure this is in for the Monday - Sunday week (dates/times are set -- not when you activate) and you are good to go. If you're doing less traveling, know that as soon as you hit 6 trips in a week, the rest are half price. Might be worthwhile to take that quick bus ride so you're good the rest of the week. Sundays are cheap --max is under $4.00 for the day. Airport rail fares are tricky because there's an access fee and topping off at the airport requires a min $35 add on. There's conflicting talk about being able to go negative balance to leave a station but it's inconsistent and not worth risking. You can't get refunds on unused trip portions without having an Aussie address and topping off is in round amounts so plan wisely. These editions of books should come with updates on critical information. Hope this helps others.

We used this book during a 3-week visit to Australia and found it very useful. The information about restaurants and transportation was especially good and it brought a lot of attractions to our attention that we wouldn't have known about otherwise. The maps weren't great to use as driving maps, but they were good enough to give us perspective when choosing routes. We used them in conjunction with our phone navigation and it worked well.

Perfect for my upcoming trip — and I’ve been there three times before! This has GREAT specific information regarding hotels, dining and tourist stuff. We used it to pick out three hotels in the cities we have not been to. I will take it with us for picking out specific tourist stuff while we are there. Go ahead and get it!

Lots of information about various parts of Australia, including bus and train information which is really good if y are not getting a car.

This was really useful on our trip. A lot of the information can be found online, but where this excels is by breaking out the cities by areas. I often find myself planning trip activities only to realize I'll waste half my day on traveling through town because the things I picked out where on opposite sides of town. This gives you idea of things that are in close vicinity to each other so you can make sure you hit the most things on your trip.

The info contained is good but the city coverage is only 90%

This has been an ideal book for planning our trip. Concisely includes all of the info that we've needed - particularly, the great suggestions about what to do in each location. Good maps. Concise yet thorough.

I needed to quickly wrap my mind around a month long trip to Australia and Fodor's delivered nicely. I got a good sense of what to expect in each region and the most appealing places to visit. I really liked the Kindle organization and lay out. It make it very easy to go right where I needed to go. Highly recommend.

Almost Nothing: The 20th-Century Art and Life of Józef Czapski, by Eric Karpeles

Review

"This absorbing biography aims to rekindle interest in the Polish painter and writer Józef Czapski (1896-1993), whose career was for decades stymied by history's tumult. As a Soviet prisoner of war, he gave lectures on Proust and wrote a history of French painting, and, in 1940, was one of only a few hundred survivors of the Katyn massacre, in which twenty-two thousand Polish officers were killed. After the war, exiled in Paris, he advocated for a free Poland and wrote two searing memoirs, but only in old age was he able to devote himself to his paintings, which Karpeles analyzes with acuity and grace. Czapski call painting both "prayer" and "defeat," after a lifelong "apprenticeship of learning." --The New Yorker

Józef Czapski is a well-known -- yet not very profoundly -- figure in Poland. His account of imprisonment in Soviet camps and his wartime search for the twenty thousand murdered comrades, collected in "Inhuman Land" and "Memories from Starobielsk" (both forthcoming from NYRB), from banned books have gained the status of required reading. Yet Czapski was much more than a survivor. Like Proust, whose writings became his life companion, Czapski was above all an artist of great sensibility, registering with keen perceptiveness minute changes in the quality of light that fell across objects as well as fine expressions of human face and body that often speak to their true feelings or hidden motives. Trained to be a painter in Paris between the wars, Czapski was thrust into history against his will, but never recoiled before the encounter. The first uniform he wore was that of Tsar's guards. Then he fought on the Polish side in 1920 against the Bolsheviks. In 1939 he joined the Polish army again, as an officer, with the intention to fight the Germans, but instead found himself facing a surprise attack of the Soviets on the Eastern front, near Lvov. Captured, along with thousands of others, he was among the 395 (and just over seventy from his camp) who survived the Katyn massacre. The disappearance of these tens of thousands Polish officers, Czapski's comrades, was not known until Germany had attacked Russia and, in desperate need of fighting forces, Stalin issued an "amnesty" to Poles caught in the enormous web of Soviet gulags. A river of migrants -- both soldiers and civilians -- flowed to the banks of the Caspian sea where General Anders was gathering his army. The breadth of Karpeles's historical research is impressive, but perhaps more importantly, an artist himself, he is able to present his subject with great feeling, yet without unnecessary sentimentalism. The pages describing Czapski's search, in 1942, for the missing officers are probably among the most moving in the book: even while we know the outcome of that search, we cannot help but be swept by the slightest hope that Czapski might be successful. As a historian, Karpeles has a well-honed sense of the present moment: that is, of that moment in the past as experienced by those who lived it, knowing what they knew and what was unavailable to them at the time. He is also closely tuned in to the changes in historical perception: for example, something that might come as a shock, the early and staunch support for Stalin in the West -- to the point that anything critical of his regime was immediately censored (e.g. on his early fundraising trip to America to gather support for the emigrant cultural/political publication "Kultura" in Paris, Czapski was explicitly forbidden from mentioning Katyn; similarly, in France, copies of his "Souvenirs de Starobielsk," published with the support of de Gaulle and other well-placed figures, against the popular communist condemnation, were being bought out by the French Communist Party and burned...). At times, Karpeles's book reads like a political/historical thriller. At others, Karpeles taps into the shared fascination with Proust whose work and life provide a canvas against which Czapski's own development and sensibility come into focus. As a painter, Karpeles can be critical of Czapski's creative output and able to appreciate both his failures and the moments of brilliance and inspiration obtained in Czapski's dogged pursuit of his craft. For a figure like Czapski, an artist, a diarist and a writer on topics as varied as history, painting, literature, politics, a self-professed Polish patriot and a lover of Polish culture, yet critical of narrowly conceived "patriotism" and opposed to any form of calcified nationalism or Catholicism (dominant in the country then as it is now!), at home in French as in Polish, Russian, and German (German was the language of tenderness between him and his mother), it is a great stroke of luck, or maybe fate, to have a biographer who is equally sensible to nuance, discerning in politics, and capable of navigating often hostile waters. Czapski's story is thus also interwoven with, no less fascinating, narrative of Karpeles's research. Not at all self-centered, this added perspective bridges the past and the present, allowing the reader to view the contemporary world through the artist's lens. Not hampered by the sort of self-censorship that haunts writing in Poland today, Karpeles is able to explore Czapski's sexuality, his inner conflicts, his religiosity, with an uninhibited simplicity. We thus get a full portrait of a complex character who, above all, remained true to himself throughout his life.

Probably one of the most beautiful books I've read. It is not only biography of the painter, writer and unbelievable historical figure (what a richness of life!!!), but the book about the artist written by the artist, the model for writing about someones life. It is not only fascinating combination of facts (which indeed are extremaly interesting in Czapski life - from russian Tzsar, to Stalin, Soviet camp and parisian "golden time" of Proust, Picasso, Diaghilev etc.), but first of all it is the book about finding the substance of life, substance of painting. This book gives the reader a breath of understanding what is art and what is life. It is also the biography of entire 20th century - it shows its beauty, level of complication, darkness and pain.It is important biography, and work of art istelf, piece of an outstanding prose of the 21st century.

“Where the Forest Meets the Stars” is a love story of the most unique proportions. Two wounded adults and an extremely intelligent child are drawn together in a fresh and fanciful story that will have you cheering for the geeks. This is not a sci-fi book but a child’s attempt to deal with a life that is far too painful for her young years.Glenda Vanderah has created characters that are fully developed and interact flawlessly as participants in this fast moving story. They fuss and struggle and learn to love each other with ferocity in the midst of trying to ascertain the truth of the youngsters travail. This is a unique story and in all the thousands of books I’ve read, there’s not been anything else like it. This is special and you’ll be effected. If there were a second volume, I’d be happy to reconnect with these folks. The story is dialogue driven and the dialogue is magical. I laughed out loud many times as the pages flew by. There are no issues with gratuitous violence or sexual content and just a few f-bombs that were totally unnecessary. In fact, they were the only expletives on one page; absurd. That issue aside, this book is worth every one of those 5* and then some. Bravo, Ms. Vanderah!

A most intriguing novel that, for me, started out a little slow. After the first 3 chapters, however, there was an air of mystery in this that kept my attention until the very end. Another mystery also surfaces which adds to the intrigue.Joanna Toule, a field biologist, was studying Indigo Buntings in Southern Illinois. Loving nature, I was drawn to this lady with her talents for locating the nests. And, after that the manner in which these nests and birds were recorded and later analyzed. One quote that I loved: 'In nature, the winner is the one that produces the most young'. For nature lovers, there is more than ample bird information and some interesting tidbits about water beetles and addis flies.A young girl, Ursa appears and there is a mystery surrounding her. Who is she and where did she come from? There is a neighbor, Gabriel Nash, that is called the Egg Man. He also has an air of mystery around him.The author touches on cancer survival and how it affects a person afterwards. This was extremely well done as it included not only the survivor but also friends. The stigma that is attached to certain types of cancer are also covered.Depression is also covered in depth...There are many causes of depression and it may be the result of genetics or environment. Lots of questions concerning this....is one able to recover with love and happiness?Another quote that I loved 'Sometimes a bad thing has to happen to make a good thing happen'. Looking back at my personal life (70 + years), this is so true. The things I thought were so bad at the time, turned out to be the best outcome.Lots in this one including the mystery of Ursa, a family mystery that is also solved. The importance of forgiveness in life is also covered. The author ties everything up at the end...very nicely and all the answers are there.. An interesting mix of characters also contributed to the plot... Loved the independence of Tabby! I would like to meet her and have a conversation!Highly recommended. Please note that this is my First Reads selection for FEB 2019.

I downloaded this book this afternoon as a Kindle First Look. I finished it a half hour ago. The characters were achingly real, the dialogue authentic, the emotions raw, and the plot had just the right twist to remain plausible with the rest of the story. Brilliant first novel! My only regret is that it wasn't a little longer- can't wait for a sequel to revisit these characters!

As far as free books go, I thought this one was pretty ok. The pacing was good as the writing flowed well. I was a little bored by how often i had to read about what time the characters woke up and what they had for dinner but I'm sure there are readers who like those details. The biggest hangup i had about this book was how unlikable the main character was. She was written as a step above everybody else in her knowledge and experiences but only because everybody else was written as ridiculous human parodies. The cops were bad at their jobs, the social worker was bad at her job, rural people were so dumb that they couldn't possibly have read Shakespeare or identify a cardinal as anything other than a red bird. It's a shame because this book had a lot going for it too, but that removed simplistic view of the world made it hard to take seriously.

I downloaded it, read a couple of chapters and deleted it off my kindle. This is typically the kind of book that I like but the whole beginning of this was so ridiculous that I couldn't even stand it. She meets this kid who within in the first five minutes basically says I'm an alien and that she heard cheese is good. Seriously .... awful writing.... moving on

I devoured this delectable treat in one day! Could not, would not put it down! It takes skill to tell Ursa’s story so believably.

Where the Forest Meets the Stars is a unique and mostly unpredictable story about a random connection between a little girl and a lonely woman. The story is captivating and flows in an authentic way as their lives get more entwined. I was impressed to see this is a debut novel. I read it over a twelve hour period and when I had to put the book down, I couldn't quit thinking about it. The ending was a little drawn out as the storylines are pulled all together, and there is a subplot with a secondary character's family backstory that seemed unnecessary. These were tiny bumps in a well told story. If you like stories where you can root for the characters and watch them overcome pain from their past, this one's for you!

The title is misleading, suggesting the book is about the structure of happiness. Familiar with some of De Botton's other works, though, I was eager to read this one too, and to learn why I am so viscerally impacted by my surroundings. I found the answer in this elegant phrase: "An ugly room can coagulate any loose suspicions as to the incompleteness of life, while a sun-lit one set with honey-coloured limestone tiles can lend support to whatever is most hopeful within us." I understand myself better through this book, and am consoled.

An enthusiast is, I think, the perfect guide to an interesting subject of which we know little. Alain de Botton is one such docent and The Architecture of Happiness is a delightful overview of the eponymous subject. This is not a history of architecture but rather a meditation upon why it matters: how it impacts our lives and affects our moods; what are the component parts that make it a success or failure? There are general observations about the classical tradition and Gothic styles and the radical break of modernism. So radical was it that even professionals had difficulty, for a time, distinguishing between engineering and architecture. The author considers all styles worthwhile and seeks out the best within them.De Botton writes beautifully and passionately with helpful photographs or renderings that compare and contrast what he is extolling or criticizing. The final two chapters ("The Virtues of Buildings" and "The Promise of a Field") are particularly fine. In them, he discusses (among other things) order, elegance, balance, and coherence. The promise of a field is a paean to the spaces we occupy that were once either uncluttered or naturally beautiful in their own right. De Botton argues that if we are going to plop down a structure in the midst of nature (which already contains natural order, elegance, and balance) let us at least make it a 'best effort'. Put thought and consideration into the process rather than just utilitarian or worse, adding another scar on the landscape. Let's make cities like Edinburgh or Bath--conceived, planned and executed with purpose, not the awful sprawl of London or Los Angeles. I couldn't agree more.Very worthwhile.

I had never read anything by Botton before picking up this one, so it was not only an architectural journey, but a stylistic one in terms of writing, as well. It starts off with pessimistic, albeit realistic views of architecture and its limits. It sounds so pessimistic in tone at first that you wonder where the book's title comes from, which draws you into it more. The ideas presented in this book are substantiated with plenty of real life proof, from Le Corbusier's mishaps to Frank Gehry's playful escapes. I wish the author would have been more direct in his language, as his ideas are not in need of pompous language to get across. I also would have liked to see at least one allusion to a work of Frank Lloyd Wright.None of the arguments in the book are earth-shattering, and they shouldn't be. De Botton's ultimate purpose of the book is to convert the "non-believers" of architecture who believe that the profession is nothing more than fanciful, unnecessary ornament. It successfully proves why we need architecture in a very gradual way: first, if you believe that who you are depends on external forces (not a very demanding concept for even the most cynical), then you can come to believe that who you are depends on where you are, followed by who you are depends on the built environment around you as much as the people in your life. After he adds this concluding link in his chain of persuasion, de Botton provides a list of five virtues that any happy structure should reflect: order, balance, elegance, coherence, and self-knowledge.

This book approaches architecture from outside the field and begins to answer questions that architects have recently forgotten to ask. (What is beauty in architecture? What is style and in which should one build?)Required reading for architects and anyone considering buying or constructing a building.

I bump into way too many people when in Manhattan. This happens because my head it tilted too far up, in awe of all the beautiful buildings, instead of head down, trying to finding the gaps in people's steps to get where I'm going faster. If you have done the same thing, or are looking to bump into more people on your next trip, you'll really enjoy this book.

de Botton always writes dense thought provoking reviews often on things we know about but don't ruminate about. So it was with his Proust book. Of course since Lehrer has told us that Proust was a neuroscientist Proust is now more widely mentioned, though probably not read. One would need to take to his bed.... The architecture of happiness in a like manner encourages one to think about how design works on us and throughout time has influenced us. It encourages us to ruminate about the things we make and see. I have given a copy to a young girl who wants to go into architecture as I believe it will widen her horizon. I highly encourage reading of this short tome and studying the pictures for any who can sit in a comfortable chair.
