Review

"Lanza and Berman employ cutting edge science to rediscover ancient truths about life and death and reconceptualize our very notions of reality and consciousness. Beyond Biocentrism is an enlightening and fascinating journey that will forever alter your understanding of your own existence."—Deepak Chopra"Beyond Biocentrism is a joyride through the history of science and cutting-edge physics, all with a very serious purpose: to find the long-overlooked connection between the conscious self and the universe around us."—Corey S. Powell, former editor-in-chief, Discover magazine"This intriguing and provocative book will challenge some of what you know and push you into rethinking your view of science—all the while entertaining you with a fast-paced, exhilarating narrative journey."—David J. Eicher, editor in chief, Astronomy Magazine"[Beyond Biocentrism] offers a neurobiological point of view to help answer questions about the world around us. Lanza and Berman make the journey towards a better understanding of the role of consciousness and perception. . . . A fun read.”—Kwang-Soo Kim, professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Harvard Medical School, and director, Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory, McLean Hospital "Lanza and Berman's latest statement of their theory of ‘biocentrism’ changes the way we think about age-old religious questions such as the origin of the universe and human immortality. Based on cutting edge work in physics and biology and explained with exceptional clarity, Beyond Biocentrism is a must-read for anyone interested in science and religion."—Ronald M. Green, professor emeritus for the study of ethics and human values, and former chairman of the Department of Religion at Dartmouth College "Will machines ever achieve consciousness? Are plants aware? Is death an illusion? These are some of the big questions tackled in Beyond Biocentrism, which serves up a new, biology-based theory of everything that is as delightful to read as it is fascinating. Tremendously clear and lovely writing—a huge achievement."—Pamela Weintraub, psychology & health editor for Aeon Magazine, former Executive Editor of Discover Magazine and former editor in chief of OMNI Magazine

About the Author

Robert Lanza, MD is one of the most respected scientists in the world—a U.S. News & World Report cover story called him a “genius” and “renegade thinker,” even likening him to Einstein. Lanza is head of Astellas Global Regenerative Medicine, Ocata Chief Scientific Officer, and adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He was recognized by Time magazine in 2014 on its list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” Prospect magazine named him one of the Top 50 “World Thinkers” in 2015. He is credited with several hundred publications and inventions, and over thirty scientific books, including the definitive references in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine. A former Fulbright Scholar, he studied with polio pioneer Jonas Salk and Nobel Laureates Gerald Edelman and Rodney Porter. He also worked closely (and coauthored a series of papers) with noted Harvard psychologist B. F. Skinner and heart transplant pioneer Christiaan Barnard. Dr. Lanza received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was both a University Scholar and Benjamin Franklin Scholar. Lanza was part of the team that cloned the world’s first human embryo, as well as the first to successfully generate stem cells from adults using somatic-cell nuclear transfer (therapeutic cloning). In 2001 he was also the first to clone an endangered species, and recently published the first-ever report of pluripotent stem cell use in humans.Bob Berman is the longtime science editor of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, and contributing editor of Astronomy magazine, formerly with Discover from 1989 to 2006. He produces and narrates the weekly Strange Universe segment on WAMC Northeast Public Radio, heard in eight states, and has been a guest on such TV shows as Late Night with David Letterman. He taught physics and astronomy at New York's Marymount College in the 1990s, and is the author of eight popular books. His newest is Zoom: How Everything Moves (2014, Little Brown).

The first thing I must say about this book it that there are not enough stars to describe what a good read this book truly is. Robert Lanza, MD teamed up with Bob Berman (astrophysicist) to write this wonderful 200 page book that for me -- finally put it all together. I studied physics and can say for myself that I have a mind of scientist that is (over)loaded with logic. But I am also a yoga teacher and since my father's death nearly 10 years ago, I have been actively looking for answers about death, immortality and nature of space and time. I read so many books about the topic, I lost count. That was until I came across this book. Authors finally put it all together for me that both my scientific, logical mind and my spiritual mind could put it all together in a manner that it finally all made sense. One of the 'a-ha" moments was towards the end of the book when author Lanza acknowledges the fact that plants have consciousness. I was reading that part of the book on the train on my way form work and at one moment, I said out loud (without realizing it) - "Oh my God!" An older gentlemen, a professional man, sitting in a fine, tailored suit next to my seat, was startled and he replied: "Did you miss your train exit? Was I in a way?". I just looked at him and smiled and my response was simply:" Oh, no. It is just that I learned from this book that plants have consciousness! Can you believe it? And there is a proof!".. He was so kind, he looked at me and said after a longer pause replied: "Well, it does kind of make sense - the fact that plants have consciousness...." What can I say - I repeated the same story to my yoga students I was teaching that same night. The fact is that this book is so rich with references to ancient philosophical books, logic from ancient Greece and how all of that information is relevant today. Authors provide scientific insight on classical physics (Newton) to modern physics (quantum mechanics and relativity). For me personally, this book, every single page of it was food for my soul. Not to mention that I was delighted to learn (and accept) the premise that authors have that, after all, we are all immortal. Some of the very fortunate people on earth experience enlightenment, and this book will show every reader that there is a potential in each and every one of us to experience it. This book opened my eyes to possibilities that no one has ever presented in such a concise and beautiful way before. There is one portion of the book where authors discuss how human beings are used to observing and exploring universe by "looking" at the skies. This book missed it by a couple of months, since it's been announced a few months back that scientists in New Mexico, for the first time, "heard" creation of the black hole. This was just an idea that Einstein had nearly 50 years ago that the events in the universe can be heard and not just seen and it was only recently that scientists could prove that events in the universe can indeed be heard by human beings. Nevertheless, this book is priceless and I am keeping it as a reference in my library. It has underlining all over the place and I just cannot stop talking about it to everyone I know.Another wonderful thing that must be mentioned is that one author (Lanza) relies strictly on science and logic, while the other co-author (Berman) believes in a "gut" feeling in spite of the fact that he received a training as a scientist. Perhaps the part of the reason is the fact that for the period of three weeks, Mr. Berman experienced enlightenment himself. I must quote one part of the book, where Mr. Berman says: "We trust our instincts. We need no textbook to teach us to love, or to recognize danger, or to be swept into a joy by a beautiful garden. Yet when it comes to grasping the nature of existence, we fumble and stumble through insensate theories, our eyes glazed over as we hear about string theory's extra dimensions".My personal struggle my entire life has been to reconcile my scientific mind with my deep sense of intuition. For a long time I denied myself my intuition because my rational mind always felt that there has to be a rational "proof" first before I make up my mind and fully accept my gut feeling. This book has finally thought me a lesson that I will allow my intuition to lead me first, I will trust it unconditionally and rationality will follow in its own time and show itself when it is ready. For that lesson I am so thankful to both of these authors. They are my personal heroes.

Sometimes it feels like my whole life has been a quest for truth. My mother is a devout Methodist while my father is agnostic (not that he really admits as much to my mother). While there are aspects of Christianity that I admire, I grew up knowing that I didn’t buy the whole package. In my teens and young adult years I looked to Eastern religion (Buddhism and Taoism most notably) and science for answers, but, while I’ve often felt like I’m on the verge of a great understanding, I’ve never really found what I’ve been looking for. In my older adult years I have largely abandoned the process. Partially because I’m too busy taking care of kids and putting food on the table, but partially because I’ve started to get the feeling that the quest is pointless. So I was intrigued when I saw this book. Basically, we’re told, everything we “know” is wrong. I don’t find that much of a leap. At various points I found this book intriguing, exciting, challenging, fulfilling, baffling, irritating and exasperating. Any book that can do all that is probably well worth reading, even if you’re not fully on board with all of the conclusions. The first half of the book is devoted to deconstructing what we think we know about the world. We delve into quantum theory, relativity and other theories to show that time and space don’t exist, at least not as we commonly perceive them. Contrary to what we “know” with science (not to mention what we feel in our guts), “spooky action at a distance” is not only possible, it’s quite common. Science is so focused on “objectivity” that it leaves a gaping hole in our knowledge – a hole that can only be filled by losing “objectivity”. That is, to really understand and make sense of what science has been telling us, we have to look to the observer – our own subjective sense. The authors take us through experiments like the double slit experiment, as well as looking at entangled twin particles that seem to know and replicate what the other is doing even if the other is galaxies away.Next we delve into deconstructing the “dumb random universe” theory. Simply by looking at the chances that 10 books arranged randomly on a shelf would happen to end up in alphabetical order (a probability of about 1 in 3.5 million) we can see that it stretches credibility to believe that everything in our universe has ended up the way it is simply by random chance. The chances that a galaxy like ours would randomly have a solar system with a planet that is perfectly suited for life would simply happen because of particles randomly bumping into each other is so astronomical as to be impossible. The authors demolish the idea of string theory (the idea of multiple universes) as being a “theory of everything” and, hence, a theory of nothing. And in any case, even if this dumb random universe theory were correct, no one has yet given a satisfactory explanation as to how consciousness as arisen out of all of this randomness. The later part of the book develops the authors’ answer to these dilemmas. We have been, in fact, starting backward, trying to arrive at consciousness by studying physics and biology. We should, rather start with consciousness and then the universe makes sense. There is, according to the authors, no “out there” out there. Everything happens in our minds, so it is our minds that we need to start with. In other words, thousands of years of exploration, observation and science have led us back to where the ancient Hindus started thousands of years ago.I’ll have to admit first off that I am no scientific expert, so I did not follow all of the science in this book. A large part of science is being able to get your head around it – to be able to visualize, even roughly, what the theories and equations are pointing to. I admit I was often rather lost in this way. The authors develop their argument step-by-step, brick-by-brick in a seemingly incontrovertible way. But perhaps because I can’t get my head around it all, I remain skeptical. For one thing, I have to question their sources. Dr. Lanza is a medical doctor, and I have a hard time believing he also has a deep and thorough knowledge of theoretical physics – those are rather big fields for any one person to master. Berman seems to be more of a science generalist who came to the field because of his own “enlightenment” experience. Many of the references seem to come from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN and other layman’s magazines. Not to disparage those publications but, being as they are written for the lay audience, they are of necessity rather simplified. My field is psychology and I have read both academic journals and popular publications like PSYCHOLOGY TODAY. I can tell you that the latter is wildly simplified, often to the point of error. But in any case, my real issue is that biocentrism doesn’t really solve or explain anything more than any other scientific or religious approach. It just raises more question – many of which are the same as any religion. If everything boils down to consciousness, whence did consciousness come from? Again, we’re back to an unexplainable first cause. Furthermore, whose consciousness? The authors frequently use the words “our mind”. Is this meant to imply a collective consciousness? I suppose so if we’re all part of some overarching consciousness and divisions and dualities are all illusions. (If not, we’re back to Descartes “I think, therefore I am” because I can only verify my own consciousness – perhaps I’m dreaming and making up everything else.)If there really are no dualities and all is illusion, how did these illusions come to be? Did we each split ourselves off from this overarching consciousness? Or did this consciousness split us off? And in either case, why? What are we “here” for? And what happens after “death” (which doesn’t really exist)? Do we rejoin the larger consciousness? Will we retain any individual sense of ourselves as separate, or will we just merge into the larger whole (which, for all practical purposes is annihilation)? Biocentrism doesn’t answer these fundamental questions any better than “God did it” or “turtles all the way down”.Moreover, if everything is consciousness and everything else is illusion, that renders life itself meaningless. If there is no death, then it doesn’t matter that people are dying of hunger or war or lack of medical care – they are just rejoining this larger consciousness sooner. In fact, we should all just lay down and die. What difference does suffering and evil and oppression make anyway? While I don’t buy into any of the Western religions, I do admire them for struggling with the meaning of life and death, good and evil, struggle and altruism.Nonetheless, I am very glad I read this book and I have passed it on to other people and look forward to discussion on the issues raised. I was, as noted, very challenged by this book and it has opened up new possibilities. The book is well written and intriguing, and, despite my skepticism, not easily brushed off or dismissed. Incidentally, I have not read the first book. I would like to go back and see if that book answers any of the questions raised here. Whether you agree, disagree, or simply remain skeptical, I recommend reading this book for some very satisfying food for thought.

Review

"Tom Wolfe, who worked with Portis as a reporter at the "New York Herald-Tribune" in the early 1960s called him the original laconic cutup. A generation of novelists since then have simply regarded him as a writers] writer and have made his name a sort of secret password. Soon, they'll no longer have him to themselves." --"Rolling Stone" "An epic and a legend." --"The Washington Post" "Like Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" and Thomas Berger's "Little Big Man", Charles Portis's "True Grit" captures the naive elegance of the American voice." -- Jonathan Lethem "An instant classic. Read it and have the most fun you've had reading a novel in years, maybe decades." --"Newsday" "Skillfully constructed, a comic tour de force." --"The New York Times Book Review" "Charles Portis details the savagery of the 1870s frontier through an astonishing narrative voice: that of the 14-year-old Mattie Ross, a flinty, skeptical, Bible-thumping scourge." --"Wall Street Journal" "I loved that book. Charles Portis got a real Mark Twain feeling, the cynicism and the humor. I tried to buy the book myself." --John Wayne

If you are a fan of either of the True Grit Movies, be it the John Wayne title or the more recent 2010 remake with Jeff Bridges, you'll enjoy this book. Both films stick to the book in their own way, but in my opinion the newer release sticks closer to the original plot and tone of the book; although both add and take away in places. Overall, even if you haven't seen the film I'd recommend it as it is a captivating but quick read (I finished It in one night). My only complaint is it is not longer, but sometimes the greatest pieces get to the point quicker than others.

What makes True Grit the fine novel it is ,is it's brilliant use of first person narrative by its main character.Mattie Ross is a 14 year old girl who goes through something that winds up defining her for life.It grabs you at the beginning and holds you to the end. Most readers will probably have seen one or both movie versions. That's not a problem. One impression you'll almost certainly have is this is a western. It is.But it's a western set in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma not the Rio Bravo. The novel is as much or more Southern as it is Western. All the principles have a connection to the Civil War.The older men fought for the Confederacy. The Indians in Oklahoma(Indian Territory) fought for the Confederacy.Federal Judge Parker is a carpetbagger and Republicans are a scurvy lot.Mattie's political commentary is priceless. There is an afterword by Donna Tart that is surprisingly mediocre.Tart has little of interest to say. While she claims to be an aficionado of the book ,her grasp of the historical setting is shaky. The novel is almost certainly set in 1878.It can't be before 1877 because Rutherford B. Hayes is president and it can't be after his term ended which is March 1881.I can't prove this but I think the novel is a 50 year anniversary reverie by Mattie Ross which takes place in 1928.You know it's 1928 because Mattie talks of her belief that Al Smith will be elected president.Tart says the novel takes place shortly after the Civil War which is correct if you consider 13 years , shortly after. She also says the novel is reflected through Mattie's memories in the early 1900's.Well if you consider 1928 the early 1900's , that's correct. However I have a suspicion Tart thinks Mattie's reflections take place in 1903 when she goes to see Rooster Cogburn in the Wild West Show. After mapping out the history in my head ,I checked to see what others think and I realized a lot of reviewers miss the comments on Hayes and Smith. That's too bad because if you don't grasp the political and historical context of the novel you're missing part of it and a dimension of Mattie.

After reading a string of unimpressive books, True Grit surprised me and made me remember what it was that I love about reading! From the first page, it hooks you. I found the main character, Mattie, to be so likable (in both the book and film) and strong. It’s hard to not admire a character with such strength and determination. She’s looking for the man who killed her father and has hired the U.S. Marshall with the most grit to aid her. A Texas Ranger, LaBeouf also joins up with them for the mission. There are so many times when she’s told that she can’t do something and then does it anyways. Her age and sex do not stand in the way of anything for her.I did see the Coen brother’s version of the movie before reading the book, but as I was reading along I could see that most of the dialogue from the movie was taken directly from the book. I love when a book and movie can be so similar, it makes visualizing the characters and events much easier. The dialogue is also incredibly witty, smart and funny (when it’s meant to be).I loved this book! I tore through it in a matter of days. It’s a fun story, exciting throughout the entire read, the characters are likable (even when they’re rude!) and overall, this is just an excellent read. Highly recommended!

It's not everyday that a book written nearly 40 years ago is still appealing, fresh, clever, and marvelous to read. I knew that there had to be something here (I mean, it's been made into two films) but I wasn't sure about reading a western (especially a YA western). Any fears that you may have that this book will not engage and entertain you can be safely laid to rest.My favorite genre is still thriller novels, gruesome serial killers or dark broken women (think Gone Girl) but I have to say this book was very refreshing and while a light, quick read (I spent a few hours in basically one sitting to finish) it wasn't light on content or message.Quite often in these cases I'd be writing "the book is so much better than the film" but I have to say that in this case the films (I've seen both versions) stayed fairly true to the book (the more recent version being more "gutsy").Anyway, if you're reading this far, go ahead and purchase the book and trust me that you won't be disappointed.

This is an American classic that is underappreciated despite generating two popular Hollywood movies. Charlie Portis's writing is fantastic, and his character development is top-notch. This is a gripping and exciting novel that is much better than either of the namesake movies. This tells the story of a brave young woman seeking her father's murderer. Along the way she is joined by two complex characters, one a drunken US Marshall and the other a self-obsessed Texas Ranger. All three join forces (sometimes) to seek the murder and the rest of the murderer's gang. The adventure travels through the rugged wilds of late 1800s Arkansas and Oklahoma. This is the quintessential great American novel.

Hornfischer has surpassed his fine The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors with this book. Three areas stand out for analysis:• The chronology of the Guadalcanal campaign is made very clear. The sea battles are described in detail, sometimes gruesomely so but that’s one of the points of the book. War at sea has no foxholes.• The command structure, doctrines and idiosyncrasies of both sides are examined. Guadalcanal may have been to the Navy what Kasserine Pass was to the Army – clearing out dead wood.• More importantly, the psychology of officers and men is explored with empathy. How young, inexperienced boys become men within minutes of horror is a fascinating study.

This is a well written history of the US Navy's Guadalcanal campaign, probably its toughest in WWII. It was also remarkable for the number of battles from August 1942 onwards, most of them between surface warships (i.e. battleships, cruisers, and destroyers) as opposed to the carrier battles starting with the Battle of Coral Sea. The author writes very well, often with high literary skill and this is a good read even for those familiar with this campaign and naval history in general. Indeed, as footnotes were lacking, for a while I thought this was just another synthesis of the usual sources (many second hand), but then found a long and impressive set of end-notes as well as the bibliography which included many after action reports, inquiry minutes, and so on. Footnotes would have been better.I rated this book at four stars because some of the language was "over the top" in stressing the author's views, and because I did not find anything really new, not surprising perhaps given the number of books already published on this subject. However, I would certainly recommend this book for readers not familiar with the Guadalcanal Campaign, and a five star rating would be justified for that reader segment community.

Despite earlier US naval successes at Midway and the Coral Sea, it was Guadalcanal where the US first succeeded in PUSHING BACK the WWII Japanese expansion in the Pacific. Though I’d heard of “the Tokyo express”, “the Slot” and “Iron Bottom Sound”, this book puts all that (and more) into coherent context. It also made all the naval battles almost feel visceral -- and frustrating. Why frustrating? We had the advantage of radar, but we had commanders who did not understand how to use radar to their advantage. We had younger commanders who, though having made mistakes, subsequently learned how to more effectively counter the Japanese and their naval tactics -- but they were subsequently replaced by officers with more seniority (but little combat experience) who then proceeded to makes the very same mistakes. Japanese torpedoes (and their tactics for using them) far exceeded the US torpedoes and tactics, yet US naval leadership never seemed to realize that was the case. The book appears to have covered all the major naval actions around Guadalcanal. And the timeline of those battles is made clear to the reader. It is pointed out that nearly 4 times as many seamen died fighting on the waters around Guadalcanal as did marines fighting on Guadalcanal itself. As for the brutal fighting by the marines on Guadalcanal, that topic is touched on, but that is not the focus of this book. (I’ve read other books that cover the island fighting quite well.)The book had many stories of individual heroic actions by both the sailors and their officers. But I’m sure there were many other cases of seamen’s bravery, but their deaths meant that their stories would never be told.Highly recommended.

This a remarkable look at warfare. Up close and personal. Anyone in national politics should have to read this; there are a thousand ways to die in battle and they are mostly pretty horrific. That to me is the main reason to read this book. The overall story of Guadalcanal is very tough to tell in one book, and (perhaps because I'm new to it) I got lost a few times (back on track with the help of the web). I think more pictures would help, with timetables: like, "this is the layout of the ships at 01:30, this the layout at 02:00" and so on.Along those lines, I'm not sure the book has a thematic coherence. What I mean is, besides the blow-by-blow, what is the overarching theme? That to me is a compelling reason to buy a book. One thing that really got my attention here was the inability of some officers to come to grips with the possibilities of radar. What was that about? For those in the know, this is an issue that has its start at Pearl Harbor (some radar techs did see the blips on the screen and did phone them in but were ignored). But really, the awfulness of dying in war might really be theme that the author overlooked. While not organized as such, the raw material is in the book, and, again, makes it worth reading by any politician or for that matter citizen.

This is an interesting book, but I think it assumes too much knowledge by the reader of the various ships used by the U Navy in WWII. It would benefit by a guide (with pictures) of each class of ship referred to. It also would benefit from photos of the main people on both sides, preferably in their standing in the chain of c0ommand. Both would make the reader keep things strait. Maps included are pretty useless on a kindle.Deeply detailed, maybe too deeply, it is noot an eassy read without the things mentioned above. Reading is interesting, but plodding. Perhaps this just isn't suit for a kindle and needs to be read in print. I want to like it more than I do.

“She’s going to break his heart.”This book was so good! I had a silly smile on my face after I finished reading it. I even told my husband how cute it was. By now, he understands my crazy love for fictional characters. From the moment JLA said she was writing about Stephanie, I knew I was looking forward to her story. Remember, Stephanie is the girl that had a thing with both Cam and Jase before they met their true loves.Steph has moved away from home and close to her new job at the mixed martial art center. She's carrying one of her moving boxes the first time she meets Nick. Nick is not only gorgeous but available. He invites her to the bar he works at and Steph can't resist going there. After a very passionate encounter, they both know the drill. Neither is ready for a relationship. A one-night-stand is the only thing they are looking for except life is tricky that way.I was swooning all over the place with Nick. He had a way of showing his feelings with actions. He had this hidden sweetness, loyalty, and protectiveness that makes him so appealing to me.As for Steph, she was a strong heroine. A normal girl with a normal libido. She wasn't mean or rude. She actually was someone I would love to be friends with. In a way, she was vulnerable too and I loved that Katie and Roxy were there for her when she needed support. I'm hoping Katie gets a book.JLA has written so many of my favorite series including this one. I can't wait to read Fire in You.Cliffhanger: No4/5 Fangs

It shows true talent to take a character who isn’t even on your radar giving then a truly beautiful, and enticing story. That’s exactly what Jennifer did with Forever With You. She turned one character’s flaws into something relateable, and matched her perfectly with her soul mate. I enjoyed this book for so many reasons, and one being it was unexpected, and with this series, each book is as different than the last. It’s a fresh romance filled with everything that makes us blush in the cheeks, and weak in the knees. We first met Nick and Stephanie in two separate Wait For You novels. It’s a small world after all! I didn’t much like Stephanie. She wasn’t on my list of characters I would have chosen for their own story, but that shows you how much I know, because Stephanie worked her way right into my heart. We really get to know her, and understand her. Nick was a character; I couldn’t quite figure out, but wanted to. That’s where the mystery. You see; Nick and Stephanie are what I would call relationship phobic. They enjoy one-night stands, and not having to deal with the hassle of falling in love and being close to anyone. Then you throw these two together, and their similarities are jolting. They meet coincidently when Nick runs into Stephanie as she’s moving in, and helps her with a box, no that’s not innuendo. They smiled. She blushed, flirted a little, and hinted that he worked at a bar close by. Stephanie was insanely attracted to Nick, and goes to the said bar. One thing leads to another and Nick ends up at her apartment not to help her carry a box. They have a quick romp, and he leaves, neither of them having any expectations, but you might have heard of crazy Katy and her psychic mouth saying this.“It’s her. The one you’re going to fall for and fall hard. Oh, boy, you have so met your match. Totally.”If Katy says it has to be true, right? Yes, Nick has met his match. He knows it. Everyone knows it. It just may take Nick and Stephanie to get with the program, but when they do it’s magnificent. No, I’m not giving anything away, because the story takes off from this point, and you will be glued to the pages. It’s emotional, and endearing. Parts may break your heart in two, but when you get to the end, you won’t be disappointed, oh yeah there’s something super special at the end.Stubborn, strong, hard, caring, are all ways to describe Nick and Stephanie. You wouldn’t even have guessed how complex these characters could be. They give as good as they get, and you will easily want to jump into the book and be a part of their world. Stephanie becomes that friend who always has your back, who you can tell anything to. Nick is the stand-up guy, who will protect you when you are in need.Jennifer gives us what we need in this story a part from the sensitive material, we get the sweet, and humorous dialogue we have grown to love from these books, and the true passage into being adults.Fans of this series will fall head over heels in love, and for me like every book I read from this author, I’m left wanting more, so much more.

I am a huge fan of Jennifer Armentrout. She's consistently one of my favorite authors no matter what genre she is writing. Forever with You is the 5th book in her contemporary romance series, Wait for you. These books follow a set pattern of attraction, conflict, happily ever after. It works because her characters are always so developed and likable. This is the story of Stephanie and Nick. We know Stephanie from her earlier hook-ups with the leading men in those books. She has now graduated, moved out-of-state, and has started a new career. Nick is the resident hot man-whore/bartender. it's a case of insta-lust, but quickly gets complicated. What is meant to be a what night stand leads into much, much more.Steph is a great lead. I wasn't sure how I would feel about her because I had been judgmental in the earlier books. She could have easily been the typical side character girl who sleeps with a lot of guys and gets "what she deserves" in the end. However, Steph is “a hundred percent full supporter of no-strings-attached hookups”. I loved this turn. It's always the man-whore leading male that changes for true love. In this case we have a confident woman who won't be judged by what people think about her. She lives for herself. Maybe her feelings get hurt at times, but she brushes herself off and goes on. She sets her own standards. Nick is more stereotypical; a jerk, arrogant, idiotic at times; but there's hidden depth, a heart of gold. He's perfect for this story. Neither is looking for a relationship which of course, makes it so enjoyable to watch them fall in love. The tragedy in this book was devastating. Heartbreaking on so many levels and Steph's and Nick's reactions made everything so much worse/better. These two characters were honestly awful at a relationship. When it worked, it was perfect, but there were so many missteps along the way. Once again Jennifer has successfully written a wonderful book full of humor, angst, steamy scenes, friendships, and a forever love.

A solid and accurate discussion of considerations in buying a house. I am a real estate lawyer. I reviewed the book as something I might recommend to a diligent client wanting to understand real estate at a little depth. This book seems like a good choice for someone who wants to understand the process (as it really is, not as it is usually hyped) and try to protect themselves against poor choices.

I am a snowbird. I ordered this great cookbook to keep in my "winter home" so I didn't have to cart my original 20+ year old cook book back and forth between both homes. If you weren't lucky enough to ever eat at the Ovens Of Brittany Restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin in the early 1970's you can still try out the delicious recipes all these 45 years later. Not low calorie, nor low fat, nor low carb...just perfect for that knock-your-socks-off taste. I have never had a failure with any of these recipes. I have tried nearly all of the recipes in the past 20+ years. These recipes are often my favorite soup/cheesecake/appetizers/brunch/sandwich/main entrée recipes. I never make any substitutions or additions. Perfect. Period. My go-to book when I want to impress family or guests for breakfast, lunch or supper. Oh, it arrived quickly and in very good shape for a 24 year old cookbook.

During my time in Madison, Wisconsin, this restaurant became our favorite place. The food was always excellent and the atmosphere was so welcoming & comfortable. I hoped that the cookbook would contain the recipe for the Ovens' superb Fresh Cream of Tomato soup, but no. Still, many of the recipes are familiar dishes that I enjoyed, so overall, this was a good find.

I was lucky enough to enjoy the Ovens of Brittany at the State Street location in the early 80's. First place I was comfortable going to by myself for tea with a morning bun or lunch to watch people pass by. It was a nice reminisce reading the Introduction and the recipes. Would have given the book 5 stars if it contained the recipe for the morning bun!

Christopher Kimball waxed Poetically about the Raison de Terre of this Cookery Book.Alas not included yet a nice description of what it was@ "The Ovens of Brittany".There are many upon which to Savour & prepare none the less.Simply "jazzed" to locate what TWO Airline Companies had on their roster in jets! Looking towards the dozens of recipes to begin to prepare ala the Complete Works Of Chef Julia Child et tal...Purchased in Prestine Condition from Amazon & Fabulous Folks@ HPB Outlet in Ohio.Thank You for another Winner of a Cookery Book!

This cookbook is just excellent! I've been asked to share the recipe every time I take a food from this cookbook to a social gathering. I've focused largely on the soup and salad recipes because that's what I like, and all of them have given me gourmet quality flavorful foods using interesting herbs and spices that are easy to find. The Chicken Almond Salad is the best and the Potato Chowder, Tomato Dill Soup and Spanish Country Soup are my favorites soups. I will say that if you don't want to spend time in the kitchen, this cookbook may not be for you because many of the recipes are a little labor intensive. Also, as you might expect with a restaurant cookbook, many of the recipes are not compatible with a fat-restricted diet (some can easily be modified however). That being said, I would highly recommend this cookbook for its recipes that consistently turn out products that taste absolutely wonderful.

My wife loves the book. (Christmas present to her.)

Excellent recipes

Every recipe will draw rave reviews when you cook for everyone except your kids. I use main dishes for company and they believe I am a fantastic cook which is not bad for a 77yr old man.
