From the Inside Flap

Bonus - Includes Part II Often disguised as something that would help him, evil accompanies Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. As you walk with him, you'll begin to identify today's many religious pitfalls. These are presented by men such as Pliable, who turns back at the Slough of Despond; and Ignorance, who believes he's a true follower of Christ when he's really only trusting in himself. Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you. The best part of this book is the Bible verses added to the text. The original Pilgrim's Progress listed the Bible verse references, but the verses themselves are so impactful when tied to the scenes in this allegory, that they are now included within the text of this book. The text is tweaked just enough to make it readable today, for the young and the old. Youngsters in particular will be drawn to the original illustrations included in this wonderful classic.

I have been reading on this book for a very long time. It has worked well for me to read a few pages daily. I suggest this if you want to stay with the project. It is a readable, fascinating book, first published in 1678. This version has been updated and made more easily read, and it takes away nothing from the narrative. Christian leaves his family and the City of Destruction in search of Mt Zion and glory. Wow, he has a HARD time but he makes it. Christian's wife, children and a companion decide to follow him. This has been a long struggle for me too. I am so gladto get most of the travelers to their destination and I to mine----The End.

I love this book, it is a classic and well worth the read whether you consider yourself a "christian" or not, so when I saw this version for 99¢, including the audio narration, I was thrilled and purchased it right away. Then I started to read it, in the prologue there is a note from some priest who has taken it upon himself to pare down the book by removing all of the "sermons" that he believes slow the story down. While that is fine for some people who may prefer this pared down version, it should be advertised up front as "abridged", which it is not. Had I known I was getting a much less meaningful version of the book, I would never have purchased it, which is why I rated it as 1 star.

Pilgrim's Progress is a classic that is just as powerful today as it was when it was first written in 1678. If you are like me though, you have struggled with the reading of this beloved book. The way we speak now has changed a lot through the years and sometimes picking up a book from a different time period can be challenging to read.I am excited to tell you about the new publication of Pilgrim's Progress. It is updated, in Modern English, but still has the original illustrations. This made such a huge difference for me. What an enjoyable read it was! I did find myself, especially at the beginning, comparing it to the original text. I wanted to see for myself how much it was changed and amazingly, very little. It's tweaked just enough to make it easy to read for today's readers.Another very unique feature about this new publication is the Bible verses that are added to the text. I'm not talking about just a Bible reference either. Entire verses including where they are found in the Bible are throughout the whole book. For example:In my dream, I saw a man clothed with rags standing in a certain place, with his face turned from his own house. In his hand he held a book, and he bore a great burden upon his back. (For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. -Psalm 38:4)This was such an amazing aspect for me. It enriched the reading in such a spiritual way. I applaud whoever came up with the idea to do this. I'm sure it took a lot of work and study, but it was well worth it.Pilgrim's Progress is not a quick read. It is something to be savored. To be meditated upon. I found myself reading some of the lines/paragraphs more than once. Then I would sit and close my eyes and think on it. If you allow it, it can speak volumes to your heart. What an encouragement for the Child of God! I would highly recommend reading this account of Pilgrim's Progress and feel your life will be enriched deeply in doing so.***This book was provided to me by Aneko Press in exchange for my honest review.

This is a great story with a picture on every page! It is an allegorical story following the character named Christian. Christian meets lots of people along his way to try to get rid of the burden on his back representing his sin. He cannot remove the burden on his own. Some people lead him astray and some people point him back to the right path towards Jesus and Salvation. Christian eventually reaches the cross and gives his life to Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins and the burden falls off his back into a bottomless pit and he is made new with a new identity in Christ! That is only the beginning of the story however and Christian goes on to learn what it means to live a life for God. He also eventually equips himself with the armor of God. It's a great story and one I recommend to every parent with young children! When my mother read this to me at 4 years old I gave my heart to Jesus. When Christian reached the cross I told my mom, "Mommy I want to give my burden to jesus too!" I pray this story will continue to share the gospel with many more people for years to come!

This is one of the better versions of the Pilgrim's Progress. The version is written in clear modern language. The Bible Verses are conveniently located so one can easily read and compare them to the way John Bunyan uses them in the story. (The Bible verses are actually written out not just marked) I have several versions of the Pilgrim's Progress, so I have read this story over and over many times. I would highly recommend this version and the one written by Barry Horner. Both of the books have their advantages. If you have read this story before and you really didn't get anything out of it, I would suggest you buying this version and trying it again. I have gained different insights with each and every reading.

My husband and I are in the process of purchasing an RV and planning our retirement journey. How very fortunate I was to receive an advanced copy of RV Guide to Camping in Arizona State Parks to read! I have found that most of the RV books on the market contain very limited information about campgrounds and their resources. The people who write them simply include the “highlights” of the area that have already been printed by the States Tourism department. You can tell they don’t have an in-depth and first hand knowledge of the area. It’s frustrating when trying to plan a trip. NOT so with this book! RV Guide to Camping in Arizona State Parks is a totally different type of guide. It is a comprehensive one-stop camping resource! The contents are laid out in an easy to read and logical manner within each section. I love the way the author has taken the time to give the reader links to available services near each campground (and distance too so you can plan ahead), phone numbers, campground maps and even GPS coordinates! You can tell that the author has actually been to each place she writes about and her experiences shine through in this concise and well thought out guide book. It’s the perfect travel companion for anyone who is thinking of camping in an Arizona State Park!

This book provides lots of information about the Arizona State Parks that allow camping vehicles. It was really helpful to me although I don't own a camper, the book details parks that have rental cabins. Lots of activities are described, such as the traditional fishing, swimming, and boating facilities. But the author also includes nontraditional activities such as Ice Cream Socials and Campfire Fridays. Traveling in Arizona is now on my bucket list!

Jackie Brochman has written the perfect companion to camping in AZ state parks. Filled with lots of useful information, including when to stay, which site to stay at, and what to do while you are there. I've stayed at half of the state parks in AZ, and she really hit the nail on the head here. It was a lot of fun reading her recommended sites, and comparing them to the locations I've stayed at.Thank's to this resource, we're making more reservations at AZ state parks, and now we'll know what to expect when we get there. If you live in AZ, or planning to come here to camp, then this book is a must have for your list.

I've been to Arizona a handful of times and have been fortunate enough to visit a bunch of the state parts. Now, I can't wait to go back. After reading Jackie's book I have all of the information I need. She goes through a number state parks and provides a ton of really useful information from the history of the park to the number of hookup, if the park is pet friendly, and even when to go. It's really an all in one guide for you to use. I can't wait to hit up these parks!

Great book and there is lots information. This is worth having.

This was promised to be free - but I go charged for it

We are avid campers and I usually spend hours and hours researching where to go and what's nearby. We far prefer the state parks and I'm so excited to have this resource. It will save me tons of time. Great job!!

Blood Bound (Mercy Thompson, Book 2), by Patricia Briggs

From Publishers Weekly

A sorcerer-turned-vampire wreaks havoc on Washington's Tri-Cities, causing death, destruction and a paranormal faceoff in the second of Briggs's series featuring Mercy Thompson, a mechanic and "walker": one who can turn into a coyote at will. After attempts by the paranormal community to destroy the malevolent sorcerer fail, Mercy finds herself pulled into the fray: though her werewolf and vampire friends are stronger than she, it turns out that Mercy's abilities make her the only one in town who can save them all. While she discovers the truth about her powers, she also learns more about her past, and the werewolves who raised her. Though the romantic subplot-involving two rival werewolves, Alpha wolf Adam and Mercy's roommate Samuel-fizzles, Briggs has a refreshing knack for imbuing her characters (even non-humans) with lived-in human qualities. When it gets going, this paranormal adventure story is engaging, but a flabby first-person narrative stunts the suspense. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Jalopy mechanic Mercedes Thompson may not be a were-creature, ruled by phases of the moon, but she can change into a coyote whenever she wants to. Because she owes him a favor, Mercedes agrees to back up vampire friend Stefan when he confronts another of his kind. But, being demon-possessed, that vampire proves deadlier than most. Before she can so much as bark, Mercedes is up to her ears in vampires fighting vampires, werewolves fighting vampires, and humans in the middle. She aims to off the demon-possessed vampire before any more killings, but she can't count on everyone who ought to be her ally because the local top vampire has schemes of her own. Briggs' world in which witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people is plausibly constructed; the characters are excellent; and the plot keeps the pages flapping. Those who haven't read the first Mercedes Thompson tale, Moon Called (2006), may well want to after reading the second. Frieda MurrayCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

#18,110 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The book was excellent. The characters were fleshed out and (at least to me) the story was original. I didn't have any of those "I know what's going to happen" moments. The pacing was just slow enough that the author could develop the story and introduce new characters, but not so slow that one begins to lose interest or feels the need to skip to the "good part". I don't know that I would recommend starting the series with this book, as a lot of the characters' backstories were laid out quite nicely in the first book. However, this is a stand alone book so if you don't mind missing some of the world building, there is nothing that should keep you from enjoying this if you didn't read the first one.I'm not going to take any stars off, since this is a review of the book, not the seller, but I will warn against buying "new" copies from third party sellers. As the one I dealt with advised the book was new but when it arrived, it had all kinds of gunk on the cover, smelled like smoke and the pages were smudged. His answer was that the book was new and I should buy some goo gone for the cover and a pencil eraser for the pages if I wanted to keep it (I did, it was supposed to be a gift) or send it back at my own expense for nearly half of what the book cost to begin with. So buyer beware as it is hard and expensive to find this book in the first place.

A gritty, compelling book.Mercy is as smart, resourceful, strong as usual. She has to deal with her attraction to Adam, living with Sam, keeping the peace between Adam who is Alpha and Sam who is the more dominant wolf.Life is never dull with Mercy around and things get complicated when Stephan asks her for a favor.Mercy is a Coyote and has a talent of getting herself into trouble, but also out of it by sheer will, wit and street smarts.Blood Bound is darker and more emotional than Moon Called. It shows us the true and evil dark side of the Vampires. It also shows us the vulnerable side of the Wolves, the slyness of a strong, capable Coyote and lots of courage and loyalty.I love books that feel real and Blood Bound is exactly that.

I have so much love for this series! This was my second time reading this book and I can honestly say that I liked it just as much as I did the first and maybe even a bit more. One thing that I enjoy about re-reading books in series that I love is seeing how many things have changed for the characters. I love how some of the groundwork for future events takes root in earlier books. The characters in this series are wonderful. Mercy is awesome. She has a wonderful sense of humor and she is tough. She knows that she is not as physically strong as many of the people she surrounds herself with but she more than makes up for it in mental toughness. She isn't afraid to take risks especially if it is the right thing to do. This book actually has a pretty big cast of characters and I really love them all. Adam and Sam are both great characters. The members of Adam's pack are all so well defined that they really stand out as individuals. I think it takes real skill to bring such a big group of characters to life. The world building in this series is phenomenal. Everything just fits perfectly. It seems like each book adds another layer to the whole picture with complete consistency. I love all of the pack politics and learning about how all of these different groups have learned to live with each other. There were moments in this book that were quite creepy and I loved every moment of it.I really enjoyed Lorelei King's narration. Her voice fits Mercy's character quiet well. It was really easy to follow and I thought she did a great job differentiating between all of the different characters. I also thought that she did a great job in displaying all of the different emotions of the story. I can't wait to continue this series in audio.I would highly recommend this series to others. I think that anyone who enjoys urban fiction or paranormal stories should check out this series. I am a huge Patricia Briggs fan and can't wait to see what she can come up with next.

Patricia Briggs is a brilliant writer! She has developed a world that is much like the one we live in but with magic all around. It makes me wish that I could meet a walker, werewolf and even the occasional vampire. Mercy is a strong heroine and makes me glad I found these books. Her alpha and omega series is on the same time line and has many of the same characters just different points of view. There are very few books that make me feel like I made a new friend after reading them but after all of Patricia Briggs books that's how I feel and can't wait to read their next adventures. I read on average 30-50 books a month and don't usually reread too many but I have read mercy Thompson books twice now and cannot wait to see what she gets herself into. I would recommend both the mercy Thompson and alpha and omega series to anyone that likes strong heroines, funny banter and good adventure. There is romance in both series but it is not the main focus of the books, she tells the story of hardships that get overcome and friends that help you through it all.

I've read all of the Mercyverse books including A&O before and I love them! This is only the 2nd time I've read this one however. It was amazing in an all new way. There is, of course, the main story, but there are also so many nuances that you pick up on after you've read it once and aren't racing to the end! The struggle that Mercy has over Adam and Samuel is fun to watch, even when you know what happens in future books. Stefan is and and Zee is his usual cantankerous self. If you haven't read this book, I thoroughly recommend it, if you have, read it again!

The Bat Lady supposedly lived alone in the dilapidated house on the corner of Hobart Gap Road and Pine. You know the one. I stood in front of it now. The worn yellow paint was shedding like an old dog. The once-solid concrete walk was cracked into quarter-size fragments. The uncut lawn had dandelions tall enough for the adult rides at Six Flags. The Bat Lady was said to be a hundred years old and only came out at night, and if some poor child hadn’t made it home from a playdate or practice at the Little League field before nightfall—if he or she risked walking home in the dark instead of getting a ride, or was maybe crazy enough to cut through her yard—the Bat Lady got you. What she supposedly did with you was never made clear. No child had vanished from this town in years. Teenagers, like my girlfriend, Ashley, sure, they could be here one day, holding your hand, looking deep into your eyes, making your heart go boom-boom-boom—and be gone the next. But little kids? Nope. They were safe, even from the Bat Lady.So I was just about to cross to the other side of the street—even I, a mature teenager entering my sophomore year at a brand-new high school, wanted to avoid that spooky house—when the door creaked open.I froze. For a moment, nothing happened. The door was all the way open now, but no one was there. I stopped and waited. Maybe I blinked. I can’t be sure. But when I looked again, the Bat Lady was there. She could have been a hundred years old. Or maybe two hundred. I had no idea why they called her Bat Lady. She didn’t look like a bat. Her hair was gray and hippie long, hanging down to her waist. It blew in the wind, obscuring her face. She wore a torn white gown that resembled a bridal costume in an old horror movie or heavy-metal video. Her spine was bent like a question mark.Slowly Bat Lady raised a hand so pale it was more vein-blue than white, and pointed a shaky, bony finger in my direction. I said nothing. She kept pointing until she was sure I was looking. When she saw that I was, Bat Lady’s wrinkled face spread into a smile that sent little icicles down my spine.“Mickey?”I had no idea how she knew my name.“Your father isn’t dead,” Bat Lady said. Her words sent a jolt that knocked me back a step.“He is very much alive.”But standing there, watching her vanish back into her decrepit cave, I knew what she was telling me wasn’t true.Because I had seen my father die. Okay, that was weird.I stood in front of Bat Lady’s house and waited for her to come back out. No go. I walked over to her door and looked for a doorbell. There was none, so I started pounding on the door. It shook under the onslaught. The wood was so rough it scraped my knuckles like sandpaper. Paint chips fell off as if the door had a bad case of dandruff. But the Bat Lady did not appear. So now what? Kick down the door . . . and then what? Find an old lady in a weird white dress and demand she explain her whack-a-doodle rants? Maybe she had gone upstairs. Maybe Bat Lady was now getting ready for her loony day, changing out of her white dress, heading to the shower . . .Ugh.Time to go. I didn’t want to miss the first bell anyway. My homeroom teacher, Mr. Hill, was a stickler for punctuality. Plus I still hoped that Ashley would show up today. She had vanished into thin air. Maybe she would just reappear the same way.I met Ashley three weeks ago at high school orientation for both new kids (Ashley and me, for example) and incoming freshmen, all of whom already knew one another because they went to middle school and elementary school together. No one ever seems to leave this town.An orientation should consist of visiting your classes, getting a tour of the facilities, and maybe meeting a few classmates. But no, that’s not enough. We had to participate in these moronic, dehumanizing, and totally awkward “team building” exercises. The first involved the “trust fall.” Ms. Owens, a PE teacher with a smile that looked like it’d been painted on by a drunk clown, started off by trying to fire us up.“Good morning, everyone!”A few groans. Then—and I hate when adults do this—she shouted, “I know you’re more excited than that, so let’s try it again! Good morning, everyone!”The students yelled “Good morning” louder this time, not because they were excited but because they wanted her to stop.We were broken down into groups of six—mine featured three incoming freshmen and three upperclassmen who had just moved to town.“One of you will stand on this pedestal and wear a blindfold!” Ms. Owens exclaimed. Everything she said ended in an exclamation mark. “You will cross your arms and now I want you to pretend that the pedestal is on fire! Oh no!” Ms. Owens put her hands on her cheeks like the kid in Home Alone. “It’s so hot that you’ll have to fall back!”Someone raised his hand. “Why would we keep our arms crossed if the pedestal was on fire?”Murmurs of agreement.Ms. Owens’s painted-on smile didn’t change, but I thought I noticed a twitch in her right eye. “Your arms are tied!”“They are? No, they’re not.”“Pretend!”“But if we pretend that, why do we need the blindfold? Can’t we just pretend not to see?”“Or close our eyes?”Ms. Owens fought for control. “The pedestal is so hot from the fire that you fall backward off of it.”“Backward?”“Wouldn’t we jump, Ms. Owens?”“Really. Why would we fall backward? I mean, if it’s that hot.”Ms. Owens had enough. “Because I say so! You will fall backward! The rest of the group will catch you! Then you’ll switch places until everyone has a turn falling backward!”We all did this, though some of us were hesitant. I’m six-four and weigh two hundred pounds. The group winced when they saw me. Another girl in my group, an incoming freshman dressed all in black, was on the fat side. I know I should call her something other than fat, something more politically correct, but I’m not sure what without sounding condescending. Large? Chubby? Heavy? I say those without judgment, the same way I might say small, bony, or skinny. The big girl hesitated before she climbed onto the pedestal. Someone in our group laughed. Then someone else.Other than to show this girl that cruelty will not stop when you enter high school, I had no idea how this exercise was supposed to help anyone. When the girl didn’t fall back right away, one of the freshman boys snickered and said, “C’mon, Ema. We’ll catch you.”It was not a voice that gave her confidence. She pulled down her blindfold and looked back at us. I met her eye and nodded. Finally she let herself fall. We caught her—some adding dramatic grunts—but Ema didn’t look any more trusting. We then played some dumb paintball game where two people got hurt and then we moved into an exercise called—I wish I were kidding—“Poisoned Peanut Butter.” For this event, you had to cross over a ten-yard patch of Poisoned Peanut Butter but, as Ms. Owens explained, “Only two of you can wear the Anti-Poison shoes to get across at a time!”In short, you had to carry other team members on your back. The small girls laughed with a tee-hee as they were carried. A photographer with the Star-Ledger newspaper was there, snapping away. The reporter asked a glowing Ms. Owens questions, her answers filled with words like bonding, welcoming, trusting. I couldn’t imagine what sort of story you’d do on something like this, but maybe they were desperate for “human interest” material.I stood in the back of the Poisoned Peanut Butter line with Ema. Black mascara was running down her face with what might have been silent tears. I wondered if the photographer would get that.As it came closer to Ema’s turn for teammates to carry her across the Poisoned Peanut Butter, I could actually feel her start to shake in fear.Think about it.It’s your first day at a new school and you’re a girl who weighs probably two hundred pounds and you’re forced to put on gym shorts and then, to complete some inane group task, your new smaller classmates have to lug you like a beer keg for ten yards while you just want to curl up in a ball and die.Who thinks this is a good idea?Ms. Owens came over to our team. “Ready, Emma?!”Ema (with a long e) or Emma. I didn’t know what her name was now.Emma/Ema said nothing.“You go, girl! Right across the Poisoned Peanut Butter! You can do it!”Then I said, “Ms. Owens?”She turned her gaze on me. The smile never changed, but the eyes narrowed slightly. “And you are?”“My name is Mickey Bolitar. I’m an incoming sophomore. And I’m going to sit out this exercise, if it’s okay.”Again the flutter in Ms. Owens’s right eye. “Excuse me?”“Yeah, I don’t really think I’m up for being carried.”The other kids looked at me like I had a third arm growing out of my forehead.“Mr. Bolitar, you’re new here.” The exclamation point was gone from Ms. Owens’s voice. “I would think you’d want to participate.”“Is it mandatory?” I asked.“Excuse me?”“Is participating in this particular exercise mandatory?”“Well, no, it’s not manda—”“Then I’m sitting out.” I looked over at Ema/Emma. “Would you mind keeping me company?”We walked away then. Behind me I could hear the world go silent. Then Ms. Owens blew a whistle, stopping the exercise and calling for lunch. When we were a few more feet away, Ema/Emma said, “Wow.”“What?”She looked me straight in the eye. “You saved the fat girl. I bet you’re really proud of yourself.”Then she shook her head and walked away.I looked behind me. Ms. Owens watched us. She still had the smile, but the glare in her eyes made it clear that I’d managed to make an enemy my first day.The sun beat down upon me. I let it. I closed my eyes for a moment. I thought about my mother, who was coming home from rehab soon. I thought about my father, who was dead and buried.I felt very much alone. The school cafeteria was closed—school opening was still weeks away—so we all had to bring our own. I bought a buffalo chicken sub at Wilkes Deli and sat by myself on a grassy hill overlooking the football field. I was about to bite into it when I noticed her.She wasn’t my type, though I really don’t have a type. I’ve spent my entire life traveling overseas. My parents worked for a charitable foundation in places like Laos and Peru and Sierra Leone. I don’t have any siblings. It was exciting and fun when I was a kid, but it got tiresome and difficult as I grew older. I wanted to stay in one place. I wanted to make some friends and play on one basketball team and, well, meet girls and do teenage stuff. It’s hard to do that when you’re backpacking in Nepal. This girl was very pretty, sure, but she was also prim and proper and preppy. Something about her looked stuck-up, though I couldn’t say what. Her hair was the pale blond of a porcelain doll. She wore an actual, well, skirt, not one of those short-short ones, and what might have been bobby socks, and looked as though she’d just walked out of my grandparents’ Brooks Brothers catalog.I took a bite of my sandwich and then I noticed that she didn’t have a lunch. Maybe she was on some kind of weird diet, but for some reason I didn’t think so.I don’t know why, but I decided to walk over to her. I wasn’t much in the mood to talk or to meet anyone. I was still reeling from all the new people in my life and really didn’t want to add any more.Maybe it was just because she was so pretty. Maybe I’m just as shallow as the next guy. Or maybe it was because the lonely can sometimes sense the lonely. Maybe what drew me to her was the fact that, like me, she seemed to want to keep to herself.I approached tentatively. When I got close enough, I gave a half wave and said, “Hi.”I always open with super-smooth lines like this. She looked up at me and shaded eyes the green of emeralds. “Hi.”Yep, very pretty.I stood there, feeling awkward. My face reddened. My hands suddenly felt too big for my body. The second thing I said to her was, “My name is Mickey.”Man, am I smooth or what? Every line is killer.“I’m Ashley Kent.”“Cool,” I said.“Yeah.”Somewhere in this world—in China or India or a remote section of Africa—there was probably a bigger dork than me. But I couldn’t swear to that.I pointed at her empty lap. “Did you bring lunch?”“No, I forgot.”“This sandwich is huge,” I said. “Do you want half?”“Oh, I couldn’t.”But I insisted and then she invited me to join her. Ashley was also a sophomore and also new in town. Her father, she said, was a renowned surgeon. Her mother was a lawyer. If life were a movie, this was the part where you’d start the music montage. Some sappy song would be playing while they flashed to Ashley and me sharing lunch, talking, laughing, looking coy, holding hands—and ending with that first chaste kiss. That was three weeks ago.I made it into Mr. Hill’s class just as the bell sounded. He took roll call. The bell pealed again, and it was time for first period. Ashley’s homeroom was across the hall. I waited and saw that yet again she wasn’t here.I described Ashley before as my girlfriend. That might have been an exaggeration. We were taking it slow, I guess. We’d kissed twice—no more. I didn’t really like anyone else at my new school. I liked her. It wasn’t love. But it was also early. On the other hand, feelings like this usually diminish. That’s the truth. We like to pretend that they grow as we get closer to our new partner. But most times, it’s the opposite. We guys see that gorgeous girl and we get this big-time crush, one that makes it hard to breathe and makes us so anxious, want it so bad, that we always blow it.If we do somehow land her, the feelings begin to diminish almost immediately. In this case, my feelings for Ashley really did grow. That was a little scary in a good way. Then one day I came to school and Ashley was absent. I tried her cell phone, but there was no answer. She was gone the next day too. Then the next. I wasn’t sure what to do. I didn’t have her home address. I checked the name Kent online, but they must have been unlisted. In fact, there was nothing about her online at all.Ashley had simply vanished into thin air.

I am one of the biggest Coben fans out there but I will admit I was a little skeptical about the start of this series. However, I am glad I read it. This novel is a lot like the Myron Bolitar novels, fast and furious plot, great characters and a mystery that is hard to put down. This novel basically starts with Mickey being the new guy in school. It doesn't take the new guy long to get into trouble, which all centers around an old woman(the boogyman... woman of the town) an old mystery and a new friend that has disappeared. Mickey much like his uncle Myron is one on the case. With his other new friends, Ema and Spoon there to help he must figure out a secret that is connected to his father and a missing young girl who needs all the help she can get.The novels spends back to Live Wire several times and also our old buddy Myron shows up several times as well. Part of the mystery of this novel is actually introduced in Live Wire and I do recommend reading that before jumping into this one. Chances are the person reading this is a fan of Coben and has gobbled up all of Myron's novels as quick as I have. This is a must read for a Coben fan or a fan of the Myron Bolitar series.Grade A+

I was anxious to read Shelter (Book One): A Mickey Bolitar Novel by Harlan Coben because I've read all of the Myron Bolitar novels by Coben and adore the characters in those novels. I feel as if Myron, his best friend Win, Esperanza, and the other characters are people I know.So when Coben decided to branch off into Young Adult Fiction, I followed even though I don't normally read YA, because this series stars Myron Bolitar's nephew Mickey. Of course, I hoped that Myron and the gang would make appearances in this new series.Blurb ItIf you're a Myron Bolitar fan, you already know that his brother was mentioned belatedly in the series, surprising readers who thought Myron was an only child. When Coben decided to go YA, he brought Myron's brother on to the scene, only to kill him off almost immediately. That was the setup that resulted in Myron's nephew Mickey coming to live with him.Mickey witnessed his father's death and watched his mom come apart at the seams. With his Uncle Myron's help, he gets his mom into rehab. Mickey has all the usual resentment toward the uncle who was never part of his life. Combine that with the usual teen angst, and you have a mixed up kid who's convinced life sucks. Throw in being the new kid at school, and Mickey is thoroughly miserable.Meeting Ashley makes him think life is improving, but she disappears. Determined to find out what happened to her, Mickey follows the clues. With the help of two new friends who practically wear the loser label, Mickey finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy that makes him question everything, including the death of his father.I enjoyed the book and its plot and characters. My only quibble with Shelter is that Coben uses descriptions originally used by Myron and friends. For instance, Myron is known for describing beautiful women as knee-knockers. Mickey uses this label too, but it's anachronistic for Mickey's generation. Because of the way the characterization is constructed, it's also not a phrase he'd pick up from his uncle whom he barely knows. Other than a few things like this, the book was a delight. If you're looking for a solid mystery, don't pass up Shelter (Book One): A Mickey Bolitar Novel.

SHELTER was an exciting mystery with charismatic characters and a well-developed plot. Mickey Bolitar is living with his uncle Myron in New Jersey. His father died in a car accident and his mother became a drug addict. Myron and his father were estranged and Mickey is not warming to his new uncle.Mickey is only a sophomore in high school but is very mature for his age. He and his parents traveled the world working for a non-profit organization. They came back to the US to make a more settled home for Mickey for his last three years of high school. Mickey is a talented basketball star, much like his uncle Myron. Now that Mickey is living with Myron while his mother is in rehab, he is starting school in the town where his father and uncle were raised. He makes friends with Ashley, who is also a new kid, and is then distressed when after three weeks of school she disappears. He also makes friends with Ema who is an overweight, goth girl who is one of the school's social outcasts and Spoon who is a unique character and who adds some humor to the story with his non sequitur trivia. Of course, Spoon also has access to school keys since his father is a janitor there. Together the three investigate Ashley's disappearance and learn about the white slavery trade, Nazi war crimes, and what Mickey's parents were really doing in their time overseas.I liked all the characters and especially liked Mickey. I look forward to reading the next book in the Mickey Bolitar series--especially since this one left some tantalizing questions that need answers.

I have read most of Harlan Coben's books and loved them. However, I avoided the Mickey Bolitar books, since they were for young adults. Big mistake. I read this book in a day........couldn't put it down. What a ride! Mr. Coben can spin a plot like no other. Can't wait to read the rest of this series!

I enjoyed the book. A real page turner but really ending it here is not very good. I would rather have paid more for the book and had a conclusion to the storey rather than waiting for the next book to be released. I like Harlan Cobens books and have read most of them. Plots are very intriguing and a lot of thought goes into his books.

I was fascinated by the beginning of the book because Martin seemed to capture the spirit of magic realism in the retelling of Garcia Marquez's childhood, but has he grows up the narrative becomes much more factual. It doesn't delve into the dynamics of his closest relationships, nor does it characterize background figures in his life, making recurring "characters" almost impossible to tell apart. It's perfectly possible that, as Martin has a personal relationship with the still-living Garcia Marquez, that he didn't feel at liberty to speculate about these relationships, but those biographers who do tend to write the most powerful and resonating books. It's still a great story though and it's well written!

Written with exceptional insight into the complex mind and life of the most gifted storyteller of all time. Martin's work is a remarkable achievement and a generous gift to those of us who could never get enough of Gabo and the worlds he inhabited. Martin's work brings to light Marquez's real life experiences and his relationships with his contempories, making this book also a valuable contribution to our understanding of social and cultural history.

Mr. Martin has written the ultimate biography of the greatest writer of fiction in the past 50 years. Detailed and fun it is a pleasure to read.

I have long been an avid reader of Latin American literature, but this biography sent me running to the Internet to find out more details about people and places mentioned in Gabriel García Márquez' life. Gerald Martin does a superb job of letting the reader penetrate the backgroud and the events that produced what many consider to be the world's masterpieces in Spanish. I read the entire book in two days, and I will read it yet again...well worth your time. Extremely well done. I especially loved the last paragraph!

I give Gerald Martin's biography of Gabriel Garcia Marquez highest marks for clarity of writing, balanced handling of some of the most difficult and emotional events in the history of Colombia and for his engaging style. I was please to discover small details about the life and times of one of the centuries most influential writer's void of fawning. Thank you for a job well done.

Biographical.

A wonderful biography of a fascinating man by an inspired brilliant writer. It is an intimate look into Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his life set in the context of key turning points in Latin American history. Amazingly researched.

I had bought "One Hundred years of Solitude" several years ago, but did not really get started with it. I am Scandinavian, but living in Latin America, thus have felt that it might be good to read GGM and to that extend Gerald Martin's excellent written biography of GGM has been the catalyst for me getting back to the GGM book. Gerald Martin writes in a way which keeps you interested and obviously has done a lot of research on GGM and so many aspects of Latin American politics, economy and mindset. I highly recommend this biography.

Compared to DirectX graphics, Directx Audio gets little spotlight. DirectX programming is known to be complex. This book does a good job in making DirectX (audio) more accessible to beginners. Here is my rating on the Content (5=Best):Accuracy: (4.5/5) So far, I have found minor ommissions in the text. However, the sample code is good enough.Coverage (4/5)The book, as some other reviews pointed out, focuses more on directmusic than direct audio programming. Maybe its just me, but I was expecting more programmer-oriented text. I only found 50% of the book applicable to my programming work.If you are considering buying this book, please check the table of contents. The direct music part is useful if you are considering composing music and/or need some basic understanding of computer sound.Completeness (3/5). This is by no means a complete reference for directx. Keep the SDK documentation handy. The author also fails to explain at times the rationale behind chosing the particular parameters values for various function calls. Expect to do some googling if you plan to understand the code insideo out.Style (5/5): The author's explaination is very clear and concise. A beginner to directx should have no trouble following the text.Overall: 5/5 if you have never touched directx before. 4/5 if you have previous experience with directx programming. You are better off with premier's game audio programming book.

If you want to gain all the benefits and sophistication that DirectMusic provides, this book is a must. Also included is a marvelous CDROM containing several very well thought out sample sound programs (both source and executables) that illustrate many of the chapters' concepts in real-time. Definitely take them for a drive. For programmers, I found this book to be packed with information on using both the DirectMusic API, and the very powerful (and free) DirectMusic Producer tool, which lets you view, edit, play, and drill down into DirectMusic files/projects. Understanding the Producer tool through this book will give you a much better understanding of the API and the architecture. The CDROM contains several VC++ projects you will find absolutely essential if you are writing your own applications. All the source code is included and is very clean, and the programs are cleverly devised and illustrate key points very clearly. This book contains a lot of information, but if you want to learn how to create dynamic music with this kind of audio quality and sophistication, this is by far the best resource I have found.

The concept and application of game audio today has become increasingly complex and unfortunately, there are not many books available on the subject. The use of DirectX is one of the more popular methods of solving many game audio issues and this book, DirectX 9 Audio Exposed, couldn't come at a better time. Written by the many experts at Microsoft who develop and use DirectX and edited by an incredibly knowledgeable game audio advocate, this is a must have book, not only on the subject of DirectX but for anyone interested in creating, producing and implementing game audio. The subject is covered completely, from concept to fruition with some interesting case studies along the way. Whether you are hoping to become more educated on the use of DirectX or game audio in general, this is a highly informative book which is well worth the money. I HIGHLY recommend it!Two thumbs up!

This book is an excellent resource for composers, sound designers and audio programmers who are focused on developing and creating interactive and adaptive audio for games. Regardless if you are utilizing Microsoft's DirectMusic Producer, you will find the techniques and strategies for creating interactive music extremely valuable and useful no matter what development tool you use.Don't be intimidated by the wealth of knowledge and years of expertise from the authors. The straight forward creative and analytical approach to presenting the concepts in this book make it very well rounded for all readers. The case studies are particularly valuable in that they provide real-world applications of creating interactive and adaptive audio for the top games. As a music composer for games, I highly recommend this book to both those who are currently developing audio content and to those aspiring to create audio for games.

Lots of good information for game programming, but nothing useful for general audio programming with Direct Sound. Judging from what I had read about the book, I thought there would be more meat in it on the Direct Sound interface, but there wasn't. There is lots in it if you are doing games and will have sound that you just need to playback, but if you need to do any audio processing with Direct Sound, that isn't in the book. It could really have benefitted from some interface documentation (perhaps an in an appendix) and a bit more low level stuff, especially on effects processing.

T IS THE BESTSD BOOK . ***** I RECCOMENDS IT I CAN USE DMP FINALLY!
