A native of Brooklyn, New York, Alejandro Danois now lives in Baltimore, Maryland. He earned a scholarship for talented minority students to attend Milton Academy in Massachusetts and later attended the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Danois is editor-in-chief of The Shadow League and a freelance sports and entertainment writer whose work has been published by The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, Associated Press, Bleacher Report, Sporting News, Los Angeles Times, and Ebony magazine, among others. It is often said that sports teams can provide hope to those who are talented enough to play. Usually this refers to a high school football team, but in the winter of 1981-82, the Dunbar Poets in Baltimore’s roughest section put together an amazing team and amazing season that not only united the team but also showcased the talent of their coach Bob Wade.How this coach and his players made this team one of the greatest in the history of high school basketball is captured in this well researched book by Alejandro Danois. The book explores the lives and tribulations of not only Coach Wade, but also has significant passages on the four Dunbar players whose careers took them all the way to the NBA: Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues, David Wingate, Reggie Williams and Reggie Lewis. The reader will get to know these players almost like they are long-lost friends. Coach Wade is portrayed as a tough-as-nails father and coach who values his players’ accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the court. The reader will have the same feelings for the coach as he or she does for the players by the end of the book.The story is made more special because of the situation in Baltimore at the time this team won the hearts of the city. Crime was rampant as the crack epidemic took hold of Baltimore and other cities. There wasn’t much hope for escaping that life, but through hard work, smarts and tough love from an excellent basketball coach, that happened to many of the young men on that Poets team – and not just the NBA stars. An uplifting book that even non-basketball fans will enjoy.I wish to thank Simon and Schuster for providing a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Their accountability to their team and hence themselves, melded individual good players into a once in a hundred year team and its members achieved self sacrificing success, which resulting in their individual success. This is a story not without sadness, as players before them that had stellar talent, succumbed to the evils and the resultant failure of their ghetto environment. Because the coach grew up in this neighborhood and earned success himself through dedication and commitment that resulted in his professional football success, he had been where these boys were and demanded of them what he demanded of himself and they produced. This would be an academy award movie as it is a story of academy award lives.

When I first started to read this book was not sure the book was going to be any good. I remember these guys from the mid 80's and David Wingate at Georgetown. Mugsy Bogues I remember playing in the NBA. The start of the book I thought mugsy was pretty high on himself and was turning me off to the book but the further I got into the book the better it got to the point that could not read it fast enough to see what happened when they played Camden. Was disappointed about the game that never was. I definitely recommend this book.

Beautifully written in a style that connects the reader to the players and the basketball court, The Boys of Dunbar is a powerful testament to desire, drive, persistence and friendship. The setting of Baltimore gives the reader the chance to see that this great city produced some of our greatest sports figures but also outstanding people. Sports for so many is their way of expressing who they are or would like to be and this book will gives the reader the opportunity to reflect. I highly encourage that this book be read by a wide audience--parents should read it, and better yet give it to your children--all will greatly benefit from this timely book.

The book was well written and provided great insight of the Dunbar basketball team/coaches and the neighboring supporting system of the recreational centers. As a product of the Baltimore City Public School system and resident of Baltimore during those years, I applaud the support provided by Mr Wade and staff, as well as the Recreation Centers' coaches, to the many young men who comprised those teams. I congratulate Mr Danois as a master storyteller.

Enjoyed reading this book. Recognized several of the players names from when they went on to college and then the pros. Most of them after basketball have gone on to be successful with their careers. It was great also to see the love and respect they have for their coach over 30 years later.

This was a heartwarming glimpse into the good, bad, and ugly of young men who swim in shark-infested waters and the brave elders who devote their lives to helping them through perilous journeys. Mugsy's refusal to limit himself, Reggie's humility despite otherworldly talent, the unselfishness of Graham and Lewis, and the resiliency of Wingate is inspirational and uplifting. Coach Wade and Coach Barham are American heroes. God bless you all. I was at the Harlem Classic and feel blessed to have been there!

Fascinating, thrilling story - well-written. I was not sure what to expect in reading a story about a high school basketball team. It turned out to be a fantastic story - loved hearing about each member of the team. And the story of Muggsy Bogues - and his determination and ultimate success - was so inspirational. As a basketball fan of the 80's and knowing the key players and coach on the Dunbar team this book was a fun read reliving the past. It's also a great story about a strong leader who built a great winning culture at Dunbar and kids who pushed each other to get better.

The material is interesting but Mr. Levy needs an editor. For example "...countermovement against the generative insecurity and radical uncertainty of capitalism...". He appears unable to relinquish adjectives, making for an unnecessarily wordy read.

I found this to be a fascinating discussion of the concept of risk and insurance in the US. It is a historical treatment that gave me a lot of insight into the thinking of how insurance works today and how those concepts developed.

This book has opened my eyes to depths and meanings of risk, risk transfer, insurance, and a great array of related topics, I never grasped at anything like this level before. (I'm a law teacher of some 3 decades' experience, without a formal finance background.) In this sweeping canvas, we also witness a seafaring adventuring people transforming into the land-based capitalists of the great emerging American cities. This is a great example of those books on the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries that give such deep insight into the formation of our modern ideas and ways. The explanations here are well-researched and well-crafted, sailing far above so much dreck clogging the bookshelves these days. This is a skilled and erudite author. Vignettes of the lives of the participants, from capitalists to laborers, alongside examples of transactions, court cases, and a big picture of the flow and development of business, are masterfully blended and paced. If the title seems to your liking, I feel assured the whole book will be.I finish at least a book per week, and this is my favorite discovery of the last year, alongside two others in law and finance history: "Novus Ordo Seclorum" by Forrest McDonald (I got in audio form) on ideological and legal origins of the U.S. Constitution, and "The Origins of Value: The Financial Innovations that Created Modern Capital Markets" by various authors. All these books have that high-quality value of building deep history-based insights into things we might otherwise see only shallowly. If only every book I start into could be this good!

i keep trying to get other people to get other people to read this book. as soon as they see the title, they get intimidated. no, no! its not like that. this is a completely engrossing read.

I found this book to be something of an eye opener. It gave me a new perspective on the inevitability of our economic ups and downs and the issues in such a market driven society as ours.

"Freaks of Fortune" is an exhaustively researched account of how America's financial system evolved in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to absorb increasing amounts of risk from the perils of the "economic chance-world." Levy traces the development of risk management principles from marine insurance to life insurance, farm mortgages, and eventually the dominance of commercial trusts in the early 1900s.Even though Levy deserves praise for his research and scholarly contribution, the book itself does not make for great reading. The 300 pages are divided into eight long, largely standalone chapters that average 37.5 pages each. One major form of risk was the loss of physical wealth (e.g., a ship's cargo); the other was the loss of monetary wealth, through a change in prices. According to author Jonathan Levy, both forms of risk were tied to the concept of personal liberty--of self-ownership: free people owned themselves, and therefore, owned the risks associated with their situation within the industrial system.This book is organized into eight chapters with a thematic (and mostly chronological) structure. The first two address the philosophical and pragmatic issues of maritime insurance, with chapter two especially focused on the antebellum dilemma of insuring cargos of slaves (slavery plays a major role in this book because of the revolutionary impact of emancipation). As the coastal trade in human captives runs its baneful course, finance and the slave power confront each other over the risks insurers are obligated to bear: is a bid for liberty the sort of disaster a policy is supposed to cover? Insurers and their lawyers battled over this in Southern courts where the expression of abolitionist ideas was virtually a capital offense.With the liquidation of slavery, the freedmen and the planter alike needed to accumulate reserves against the risk of early death or incapacitation. Life insurance (§3) had, until the 1850s, been unusual and primitive in the US; now it boomed. In the past, all types of farm proprietor had accumulated capital mostly in the form of land and improvements (and in the South, slaves). After 1865, the saving bank (§4), farm mortgage (§5), and life insurance policy became major forms of personal capital accumulation. In fact, savings bank management and life insurance companies, with rapidly growing portfolios of deposits/reserve funds, turned first to the railroads and then to farm mortgages as an outlet.Levy frequently frames the quest for risk management as a "countermovement" (after Polanyi); Polanyi coined the phrase to refer to the tendency of people to resist the uncertainty inherent in a rapidly evolving market economy. As more and more social institutions were replaced by putative markets (markets for labor, land, and capital, among others) and as good from far away become competitors to those produced locally, people increasingly insisted on legislation to reduce uncertainty about the future. Polanyi was interested in measures such as statutory restrictions on markets, such as agrarian protectionism. Levy is interested in the "countermovement" of the market itself to the uncertainties it produced: the emergent technology of risk management (1).But as the market introduced new ways of alienating and commodifying risk, it created more risk. Partly this was a simple effect of moving the risk of commercial ventures onto new markets farther away from the original: insurance companies rather than merchants, for example, took a large part of the financial risk of shipping; farm mortgages, the hot new repository for savings deposits and insurance premia, were quickly pooled, securitized, and traded (until that particular form of risk arbitrage blew out in 1893). However, the pooling and securitization of risk itself was--from the very beginning of US history--multiplied outward to create lucrative investment opportunities. Instead of the risk of a price movement being split up (and presumably easier to bear), the risk was replicated, pantograph-like, for all the people who wanted to gamble on the upside risk of a price movement. So, for example, in 1888, when American farmers harvested 415 million bushels of wheat, experts estimated 25,000 trillion bushels of wheat were traded in futures contracts (2). This multiplier effect had a ripple effect through the global economy.In addition to the derivatives market (§7), which is well known to followers of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, there was also the countermovement of "fraternalism" (§6). Movements such as a Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUM) or Knights of Columbus emerged to provide support for members' dependents in the event of death or disability. In the fullness of time (i.e., 1905), litigation had reduced these to mutual insurance associations, but the fraternal orders did outperform the insurance companies during the financial catastrophe of the 1890s (3).Levy concludes with (§8), a cautionary introduction to the quixotic George W. Perkins, partner of J. P. Morgan. An architect of industrial consolidation (NYLIC,US Steel,International Harvester), Perkins sought to first unify industry--eliminating competition within heavy industry--and then guarantee social welfare to employees. Perkins did not hesitate to describe this dream of his as "socialism," albeit socialism of a singularly undemocratic kind. The paternalistic scheme he aimed for was lampooned relentlessly, and while he was well-connected, association with him would prove highly radioactive (4). But Perkins' downfall was his conflict with other plutocrats, who insisted on the fiction of the uncertain market--a market that would never brook the luxury of gracious benevolence towards its workforce._______________________________________________(1) "Emergent": a type of order that arises in groups of things (like cells in an organism) that cannot be predicted by examining the constituent parts in isolation. An example is a hurricane: parts of a hurricane, or little bits of hurricane-like behavior, cannot be found in the constituent bits of the atmosphere. For an introduction to the concept, see Peter T. One of the passages in Polanyi's _The Great Transformation_ addressing the [statutory] countermovement begins on p.152 (2001 edition). In 1888, a bushel of wheat had a mean price of $0.93/bushel (see USDA Economic Research Service, Wheat Data).(3) The fraternal organizations formally repudiated any actuarial estimate of risk valuation until 1888, on the grounds that risk pricing was morally sordid. The fraternal movements are the one form of countermovement mentioned by Levy that really correspond to Polanyi's original sense.(4) George W. Perkins managed Theodore Roosevelt's attempted political comeback of 1912; Wilson's campaign targeted Perkins, rather than Roosevelt. Wilson's form of populism took the form of anti-conspiracy (which would presumably mean free markets and free men). Perkin's (and Roosevelt's) populism took the form of industrial peace and paternalism. Perkins was "exposed" repeatedly for conspiring to restrain competition, as in the New York State legislature's 1905 hearings on consolidation in the insurance industry. Perkins never broke the law, but he was very good at supplying his enemies with ammunition.

I think I have a love hate relationship with this book. I have been eagerly waiting for it for months. It, undoubtedly, is a great collection of exercises, but that is it. The instructions for the stretches are ok, but not particularly detailed. My biggest issues are that there is nothing in the book tonshow you how to put them together and they dont show progressions or regressions. If you cant do that pose well, you just cant do it. I am really disappointed.

UPDATE 7/12/18: Got a bit farther into this book and I'm finding multiple 8 to 10 page sections that are repeated. So far pages 193-200 are repeated as well as pages 217-224. Pages 201-216 are nowhere to be found. Very disappointing that such a basic aspect of binding quality has been overlooked.I have mixed feelings about this book.There is no doubt it is comprehensive and it does show a wide range of stretches. However, it seems as though there are many that are duplicated between the different sections of the book. I would have preferred a book of 1,200 or even just 1,000 stretches without all the duplication.I would have also liked to see half-a-dozen programs that put a logical sequence of stretches together. That would increase the book's value immensely and give people a springboard for developing their own sequences of stretches.The basic quality of the book is very good. The printing is clear and crisp. The photos are well done and the models are attractive. From a graphic design point of view I'm not sure why their clothing had to be so drab. The paper is weighty and feels good in the hand.

Amazing book with every conceivable way to get flexible. I grew tired of downward dog and the repetition of yoga and truly love this book. Beautifully photographed and illustrated. Can’t beat it for the price.

The book does have a comprehensive listing of stretching exercises and other good information. I'll use it and I'm glad I got it. However. . .If a buyer is easily offended by suggestive crotch shots of women, then they might want to pass on this book. There are a number of such pictures here, and yes, while it is an exercise book, all of those pictures could have been done from the front or side--other angles--that would be less provocative. Interestingly, ONLY the women are presented with compromising crotch shots. None of the men are. Similar exercises demonstrated by men are all--100%--taken from a side or front angle. Someone needed to do better editing before releasing this book.

I had no idea how huge this book would be! It weighs about 3 lbs. it has every stretch you could ever do clearly laid out in a great format. Makes scanning simple and it’s easy to find the stretch needed for each body part. The example images are well done and this is a great book that I’ll probably use and refer to forever. Super solid buy.

This is a massive book on stretching! I never knew how inflexible I was until I received this book. My range of motion has significantly increased since I started incorporating stretching into my daily routine. I also attribute not needing lower back surgery to stretching and increasing my range of motion. Once I started stretching regulatory, my lower back pain decreased and pressure from a disc herniation on my sciatic nerve was relieved. Thank you Hollis for another great book!

I was excited for this book. It separates by: head and neck, shoulder, arm, back, chest, core, upper leg and lower leg.It lists stretches in abc order by name but just has instructions that you would find on the internet.The 1500 also include stretches w ball or other props which is why there are so many. (Quantity vs quality).I guess I was thinking I could turn to a section if I wanted to stretch a certain area and it would tell me why that stretch is benefitting that area (like if you had pain somewhere or wanted to work out a specific section; which ones produce best results etc).I sat for an hour and went through 25% of the book doing the stretches.I guess it would be nice to have some sets for certain areas.I included a pic from the book to help you get a better idea.So it's not one I'll be returning to often. But if I get bored one day, I'll go through some stretches.I guess I could've just used internet and googled shoulder, core stretches etc.I hate to be negative since books take a lot of time and effort; just wasn't what I was looking for.

I thought this book would tell you more specific about the area you are stretching (muscles) . Overall, I like the streches
