I bought this book for my sons' home library. But I found myself reading it from beginning to end and marveling at the updates in information about space from when I was a child in the 80s. We've watched a lot of documentaries since then on space accomplishments and discovery of dark energy and the the speeding up of the expanding universe which initially I read about in this book. Pretty much this book covers a LOT of material but in a way that kids find it interesting and gain a deeper understand in a more concise format.

You know, I try to keep my finger on the pulse that is my kids' likes, interests, and passions. When something new crops up, I try to be supportive. For my 10 year old daughter, who is very fond of science, specifically anything related to zoology, I got this book because she has recently surprised me by developed a strong interest in Astronomy. She says this is definitely a 5 star book, specifically because she really enjoys seeing the pictures of the things discussed. She has read one other more sizeable Astronomy book, Astronomy for Dummies, but that didn't have pictures. So while she found the information useful, she wasn't as enthusiastic about it as this one. Although, I think I have the Astronomy for Dummies book to thank for developing her interest in that subject, it was one of several books I got for her to read just for the heck of it. She was so excited about this one her whole face lit up when I gave it to her. She likes her Science Encyclopedia better, but says this is still definitely a 5 star book and that she loves it.

Really love all the pictures but I wish there were less illustrated pictures and more captured photos. I like that there is a lot more than just planets and comets included but there is a lot of theory too - futuristic illustrations of potential events or landing on some far away planets or moons. Although stimulating to the imagination, I would have preferred that this book remained a factual encyclopedia. I think that if I saw this at Barnes and Noble, I probably would not have bought it.

I bought this for my 10 year old nephew for Christmas. He was wanting some science kits and stuff this year and he has been really into certain areas of astronomy after watching The Martian and he keeps asking me to look at my astronomy books which are too technical for him, but I found this online. He was very happy with the gift and while a some of the information is still a bit beyond him, he's been having fun looking at the pictures and reading bits and pieces of the data about the different planets and such.

Wonderful book. Lucious pictures and interesting facts at any age! I gifted two of my grandsons who are fascinated with all things space a book apiece. They dove right into their new books and refer to them a lot. I feel good giving them quality books they can appreciate and enjoy for a long time to come.

I got this for my 9 year old grandson as a Christmas present and he loved it but so did his 7 year old brother. It features a planet per page and really gives pertinent facts. The pictures are beautiful and I would recommend this to any parent or grandparent who has a child interested in space. I coupled this with The Night Sky book and it made a dynamic present.

Received today .. fast shipping, new clean book. First impression is great and happy with the purchase.But, there are many tiny fonts on black background, which isn't easy to read for young children, especially who are English isn't their first language.

Bought this for a family friend - a nine year old boy with ADHD, who loves everything about space and wants to be an astronaut. He’s a friend of my son so I took my boy’s advice on getting this book and he was right. The birthday boy loves it! His mom said she couldn’t believe that in the middle of opening presents he got totally into the book and stopped everything else. Wow! Now I need to order one for my kid!

Wow, my grandpa loves this book! It has a lot of great pictures and information. I highly recommend this book.

I looked for books, and I had two choices, either this book, or a $160 textbook like this Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach (7th Edition) that devotes hundreds of pages to different graph-based computer algorithms.This book appeals to two kinds of audiences: ** 1. If you don't know anything about the internet. This book is the best, most easy introduction to get. That's good, because it's also one of the only introductions that's not a textbook. You won't learn everything, because that's a lot of computer science algorithms, but you'll have the best overview from this book. The stories are good, but not excessive like in Malcolm Gladwell's books. ** 2. If you are under 35 and work in technology, no matter how technical your role. This is because so much of the technology you use now is virtual...software defined networking, virtual machines, virtual routers, VLANs, VPCs, AWS, etc. The internet is still a very very physical place, made up of hundreds of thousands of miles or wire, giant internet exchange centers (like the kind Facebook runs out of Nebraska that you'll never see), $80,000 routers made by Brocade that people like Verizon buy, etc. If you want to know how the internet works in the same way that you can open your car and know how everything works (as opposed to just buying a Tesla), get this book.P.S. If you are now pretty technical and want to move beyond the algorithms and other important-but-not-real-world kinds of learning, I suggest you check out Network Warrior: Everything You Need to Know That Wasn't on the CCNA Exam.

I do not agree with some reviewers claiming that the author lacks proper technical insight to write a worthy book about internetworking. It seems to me that it was a deliberate decision not to lean too much on tech details when describing how Internet works. Certainly I could not expect this title to describe inner workings of the TCP/IP suite, or how routers from different networks negotiate routes via BGP. The author, starting with a realization that most people don't notice the existence of networks (Internet is seen only by the content pulled from servers), tried to describe their physicality. Internet is not a nondescript "cloud", it happens to consist of cables. Lots and lots of cables.I like Andrew Blum's remarks on how Internet "tubes" strongly depend on world's geography and existing infrastructure. Cables are placed along roads, the largest Internet exchanges are placed in cities which already were commerce hubs, undersea cables originate and end near ports. Data centers are built in cold places with abundance of cheap electricity. The Internet, commonly perceived as ubiquitous, at its very core (the backbone network) is running over a not-that-large set of routes, governed by a handful of companies. Also appealing to me were the attempts to capture the atmosphere (the nature) of visited buildings and people; probably a bit stereotypical (all network engineers wear hoodies), but enjoyable.The author's penchant for expressing philosophical remarks (mainly on how virtual relates to physical) was annoying a few times but, OTOH, they make it a book which tries not only to convey Internet's architecture, but also its idea. A pleasant read, IMHO even for die-hard network specialists.

I'm an engineer and have always been interested in networking technology. When I heard an interview with author Andrew Blum regarding this book, on NPR, I immediately decided to buy and read it. The book is interesting and insightful in parts, but I found it a bit superficial and was somewhat disappointed with the superficiality of most of it. I guess I was expecting something more like Malcolm Gladwell's quantitative analyses of many of the topics that he writes about, but instead this book is mostly a travelogue of the author going around and just looking at various internet exchange points and data centers.There were two chapters that were really great: one concerned Andrew Blum's meeting with Leonard Kleinrock, who in some ways "founded" the Internet when he established the first inter-network link in the original Arpanet. Hearing one of the Internet's founders explain all the things he did and didn't envision for it was fascinating.The most interesting chapter is the second-to-last, in which the author observes the laying of an undersea fiber-optic cable in Portugal, which will connect it to the Azores and Africa. The nitty-gritty details of forming the physical interconnections between distant points are described here in an up-close way that I found far more satisfying than the detached, tourist-like point of view that the author takes in most of the book.

Appreciate the author's vision of win/win for parties as opposed to "a good mediation is when both sides leave somewhat disappointed" approach.Excellent stories of apparently unsolvable situations finding resolution with some ingenuity and resourcefulness. This was often accomplished by the author using his great people skills in order to get parties/attorneys to let their guard down and reveal their motivations and goals often not otherwise apparent from the face of the pending dispute.Very well written. An easy pleasurable read. I highly recommend the book for any mediator or non mediator looking for inventive approaches to problems whether litigated or not.

The author's experience raising over $1 million over three campaigns is highly valuable to us, as this will be our first crowdfunding campaign.This book is much more detailed than the Creator Handbook on Kickstarter's website, but it doesn't go too far into the weeds as there are many different types of projects. I read it carefully in about three hours, but we are by no means done with it.After reading, you are encouraged to download a free set of spreadsheets from the book's website. The exercises in the spreadsheets correspond to each book chapter and have you go through everything from why you are doing this, to your plan for manufacturing and logistics, to planning your updates throughout the project.We haven't done the exercises yet, but they seem like they are well worth doing as they will reduce a lot of unexpected headaches. There were so many things we wouldn't have thought of that are covered.We are looking into doing a vlog on our experience planning and running a Kickstarter campaign. Although this book is focused on Kickstarter campaigns, there were some very relevant topics that pertain to any crowdfunding campaign, not just Kickstarter. The Author suggests reading the book straight through in the order in which it is presented since later chapters refer to previous chapters.What I found most intriguing was the real-life example that the Author discusses in the book. The example was his direct involvement in the development, manufacture, and marketing of a series of cycling related products, It's one thing to read a book based on hypothetical examples and quite another to follow the actual progress of a real campaign.The most significant thing that I picked up was the importance of ensuring you lay a good groundwork before unleashing your campaign. This would include researching other successful campaigns and scrutinizing them to determine what helped make them successful. Determining what rewards you might want to consider giving your backers is also very important and the author has some good guidelines to follow.For my campaign (raising money for a movie production,) the chapters dealing with Shipping & Logistics and Manufacturing were not relevant but were interesting nonetheless.This is a great resource for anyone looking for a good primer on Crowdfunding written by a guy who has successfully been there.

There're so many free & more legible maps available in Dublin that this map isn't really necessary unless one ventures outside of the immediate city centre or needs to find locations that aren't major attractions. The lack of eye-level street signage (Americans train your eyes to look to the 2nd story of corner bldgs for street signs in the city centre!)is a problem that not even the map can overcome, esp outside of the city centre. Few Dubliners kniow the names of streets & navigate instead by landmarks, so directions freely given by the Irish aren't always helpful. Grab as many of those free maps as you can! Taking 1 of the hop-on-hop-off bus tours early in your stay is really the best way to get oriented to what is really a very accessible, navigable, & interesting city.

Like all the Streetwise series of maps, this one of Dublin does not disappoint! With a large view of the city on one side and a blow up of central Dublin on the back, along with a blow up of Ballsbridge, this map provides extraordinary layout. Additionally, there is a detailed and accurate index of every street in Dublin on the map and also alphabetical listing of all hotels and other points of interest. Without any equivocation, this is the best and most convenient map of Dublin, a city which has a habit of renaming the same street every block or two.Purchasers of this map will NOT be disappointed by the quality and ease of use of this document. Printed on hard coated stock, the map holds up well in comparison to others printed on cheaper papers. This map is highly recommended and will serve the user well in finding anything of interest in the City of Dublin. Do NOT hesitate to purchase it!

I have seven Streetwise maps now and highly recommend them to my friends and family. I'm sure other maps are just as accurate, but I appreciate how thick this one is so you don't have to worry about it getting ripped up or flapping around when it is windy. It is also waterproof so you don't have to be concerned it will get wrecked if it rains.Do be aware, however, that this map is relatively tall so it isn't the kind you can keep in your pocket. I kept mine in my cross-body purse and it is just short enough that I could zip the purse closed, but for women who carry shorter purses (and for men) the size of the map may be frustrating.

Since we spent most of our time in central Dublin, this map was very handy to plan our day's visits. We walked everywhere and it was easy to find the places we wanted to see - especially since the Irish seem to have a penchant for changing street names every now and then just for the heck of it. A big plus is that it's laminated so it wore well (and stayed dry).My only minor criticism is the type size: most of it is just a little too small for my eyes; but considering the vast amount of information on this map it was very acceptable.

I'm not sure of the value of this --- if I had a special pen that I could write on it and then wipe it off, it might be ok, but not sure how that would work without getting wiped off unintentionally. There are lots of maps available for free though and I often use the mapping software on my smartphone to find the directions anyway. For the price though, I guess it's ok --- gives you a big picture of the city

These are readilyavailable in Dublin of course, and cost a bit less, but with this map we were able to plan our trip and then quickly orient ourselves to the city once we got there. It is a bit pricey, but the laminate holds up so much better in the dampness and the constant handling while you travel. I guess I am old school, but I like a paper map, even when the digital one is so handy too.

The main reason why I like this map is that you can use it in rain or drizzle - frequent occurrences in Dublin - and it doesn't disintegrate. The downside is that tiny print makes it hard to read unless you're in a good light. But because it folds and fits easily in my bag, I wouldn't be without it.

Being a world traveler for my job, I have a whole collection of Streetwise maps for major cities around the globe and I personally think they are the best of all the maps I have had. They are drawn in way that it's not too hard to see where you are and get around plus they are heavy laminated so you can fold them up and they won't tear. Highly recommended.
