Isaac Butler is a writer and theater director, most recently of The Trump Card, a meditation on the peculiar rise of Donald Trump with the solo performer Mike Daisey. Butler also wrote and directed Real Enemies, a collaboration with the composer Darcy James Argue and the video artist Peter Nigrini, which was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music and named one of the top ten live events of 2015 by the New York Times. He holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Minnesota, and his writing has appeared in the Guardian, Slate, American Theatre, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and other publications. He lives in Brooklyn.Dan Kois is an editor and writer for Slate's culture section and a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine. He's the former culture editor at Slate, where he launched the Slate Book Review. He previously co-hosted the podcast Mom and Dad Are Fighting and is a frequent guest on Slate's Culture Gabfest. There are very few theatrical productions that both recount the change of history and make that recount a change in itself. "Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes" by Tony Kushner is one such production. Appearing in the mid-1980's and continuing to this day, Kushner's play(s) give the AIDS epidemic a "face" by showing different bits of society who were affected by disease. By having a cast which included such characters as Roy Cohn and Ethel Rosenberg being surrounded by unknown people who carry the play's plot (to the extent there is a plot.) I never saw the plays at theaters but did see the wonderful HBO production in 2003 and read Tony Kushner's revised edition of the play, published in 2014.Isaac Butler's new book, "The World Only Spins Forward: The Ascent of Angels in America" is the story, basically, of the play's productions going forward from 1985. He interviews many of the cast members, production people, and those involved in the writing, direction, and finances of the play. The author, of course, is Tony Kushner, whose almost feverish writing and rewriting of the play was continuous over the first few years. Kushner combined the politics of AIDS with the personal of gay identity. He includes religious identity; several of the main characters were Mormon. (Hhhm, I wonder if the idea of "The Book of Mormon" came in part from "Angels"?)"Angels in America" was produced on stages from London to Los Angeles and played for many years in New York. The play began in San Francisco, produced at the Eureka Theater, a small local theater. Oskar Eustis was the producer and he and Kushner worked together with their actors and stage crews to put on the first production. But the play, as Kushner kept writing, was so long that it was eventually broken up into two plays. Who had the stamina to star in two plays? The mostly young cast who entertained the rapturous audiences who had the stamina to sit for hours! From San Francisco, the play headed to Los Angeles, and then on into the wider world.Bishop's book is written in chapters which are short interviews with various cast and crew. I really don't care for this form of non-fiction, but the subject was so well covered that the writing style didn't bother me. I mention this only because some readers don't like this style.
Brilliant-ish. Important. A must read. Now, I do find the books “compiler’s†choice to group the many people interviewed’s comments by subject matter rather than by time-frame rather frustrating (do we really care what the actor who played “Joe†in the third Lithuanian national tour thought about his character’s wardrobe?), And, the book on a whole is lacking in particularly one area. PHOTOGRAPHS! A BOOK ABOUT THE MOST VISUAL OF ALL PLAYS HAS VERY FEW PHTOGRAPHS! How can this BE? Yes, there ARE some. But, COME ON! What did the first production LOOK like? The Eureka production? The National? THE GOD DAMNED BROADWAY PRODUCTION! Aside from the SET, the LIGHTING, the COSTUMES, there aren’t even sufficient photos of the CASTS! There should have been COMPLETE CAST PHOTOS from EVERY SINGLE PRODUCTION so we knew who the “talking heads†were. You could even have reproduced EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM. You quote the actor who played “Belize†at the National, without EVER showing us what he LOOKED LIKE! You want to be definitive? BE definitive. The quotes are priceless, but grouped by subject rather than production or by year, it comes off as a mish-mosh. Highly important and relevant quotes mixed in with comments from an understudy in the 2003 Australian production. You have ALL the “Joes†talk about the unique aspects of playing the character, mixing in, with no apparent logic (and no photos) ALL the Joes from the 1980’s through to to 2018. 1994 Joe’s comment follows 1985’s Joe follows 2017’s Joe follows 2001’s Joe. In totally different productions, from college productions to Broadway to the first readings of the play to a 1994 workshop. It’s head-spinning and the less relevant quotes are given the same importance as the quotes from the Broadway Joe. VERY odd and disjointed and confusing. Better, I think, to have gone from production to production, year by year, BUILDING in importance rather than dissipating momentum. MUCH MORE time should have been devoted to the original, San Francisco cast. THEN all the subsequent casts leading UP TO the Broadway production which most of us are likely to have actually seen. And, what about the SET DESIGNERS? The COSTUME DESIGNERS? The SOUND DESIGNERS? I, particularly, don’t really care what research the actor playing “Prior†did to prepare for the production by the Michigan School Of The Arts in 2001. Frankly, I don’t particularly care what the ACTORS who are in the 2017 National Theater REVIVAL that recently moved to Broadway think about how grueling it is doing two three hour plays in one day. I DO care how the DIRECTOR of that production approached a twenty year old text. THAT would have been FASCINATING. But, we hear almost NOTHING from her. I know many personal stories about the Broadway production, having been friends with one of the lead actors, and the stories he told ME were MUCH more interesting than what the same actor, “for posterityâ€, told YOU. With no interviewer and without any editorial comment, we get, at the very least, a very “cleaned up†version of events. A very CAREFULLY SELF-SERVING picture of what went on offstage at this these productions. The book is MARVELOUS and a great deal of fun. Definitive? Not even close.
I can not believe that I read the same book that others here are reviewing so highly, and I am not certain what I expected from the book. I know I did not get what ever it was. Much like the society page in Sunday's paper, with photographs of attendees at upper-tier fundraisers, the content of "The World Only Spins Forward" must be fascinating to those involved, and to their five hundred closest friends, but few others.After reading nearly half the book, I could not continue. I am disappointed because I have seen the play twice and watched the HBO production several times, and I am still mesmerized by its beauty and power. There is definitely a particular audience for this book, and I am just not a member.
