Quite possibly the best book on the music business I've ever read. Like most people with an interest in the subject, I'm aware of some of the "goings-on" in record companies and publishing houses. However, I never realised just how long this had been happening. From the early days - well before recording was even invented - there were plenty of dodgy characters laying the groundwork for what has become one of the most corrupt industries on the planet. A brilliantly interesting read.
I've read a lot of books about popular music. This one is nothing short of amazing. Well researched, it lets us know why there are few rich musicians, but a lot of rich music businessmen (and given his long experience in the music business, he should know). Napier-Bell is also quite the character so he doesn't realize these kinds of books are supposed to bore you to death. Instead, we get all the dirt on the famous and semi-famous in the music business. Even better, Simon Napier-Bell follows it all the way back to the beginning of (western) popular music to let us know this kind of swindle has been going on for centuries. Another wonderful read from Simon Napier-Bell.
had to have this for a class.
I've been a fan of Simon Napier-Bell since i read Black Vinyl - White Powder, and this is not his best book. The first half, while needed, is a little slow, then it picks up pace. Not a bad read, but read the other books from him first.
some good spots some dry spots
finished last week, and it's a fabulous book, where the stars are not really the stars! it's about the business men behind the great music stars, the money that runs among them and it's an excellent reading, the author keeps a humorous view through the events! I'm from brazil, please forgive any mispellings or wrong words!
The best and most comprehensive history of the modern music business from 1710 to present. Extremely insightful. After you read this it will all make sense, and you'll understand why it is the way it is. Bravo Mr. Napier-Bell!
Superb review of how the music business really has been on the last two hundred years. I luv how Simon conducts his texts.
